Before the disaster. There before 18th Dec. This sent after they returned home as was suppose to arrive Seattle on Monday evening 20th Dec. message sent Dec.22 Dec 2004. Well, I thought that I would post this bit from a cousin Wally Barnett of Seattle, Wash. It was the last I have from him and Joyce on their trip to the Islands and on a cruise ship. his sent after getting home. It describes Thailand as they were there on before 18th Dec. 2004 just a few days before the Disaster on 26th. They were suppose to have been back here in Seattle by the 23rd so this was close to the ending part of their trip. Haven't heard from them since they were suppose to have returned. So am little worried but they had days all planned so I feel sure they did returned by the 20 Dec. as a message gave the route theytook homeward bound. Maxine willma@sprynet.com Sent: Wednesday, December 22, 2004 2:31 PM Subject: Phuket, Thailand Thailand means "land of the free" because it was never conquered by a European colonial power. It's a monarchy with a prime minister and parliament. Early this morning our ship docked in Phuket, located on the westernmost point of that portion of Thailand that extends down into the Malay Peninsula. A gold star if you can locate it on the map. It may appear as Ko Phuket. Ko means island. For all its natural beauty, few islands can match Thailand's "Pearl of the South". It has tall jungled hills, a wonderful coastline, coconut plantations, rice farms, white sandy beaches, and blue lagoon waters bordering on the Andaman Sea. Just picture an oriental Oahu. And like Hawaii, it has a large diversity of peoples, languages and cultures; mostly Thais, Malays, Chinese and Indians. From our port of Phuket City we rode the bus north for two hours while viewing the coastal waters and towns, to arrive at the Phang Nga Hotel on the beach, where the 30 or so passengers of our tour bus embarked on a one hour river-bus voyage to visit one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. I think we were at the confluence of the Phang Nga Kho (kho means river) with the Andaman Sea. Huge, towering limestone mountains covered with dense tropical vegetation ending at the edge of the river where sheer limestone cliffs drop abrupty down to the waterline. Five thousand years of river and tidal erosion has scooped out caves and caverns actually extending back under the cliffs by as much as 10 or 15 feet. Other vertical stacks of limestone stand alone in the neighboring waters like huge thumbs of approval. One of these 300 foot towers has a cavern through the center of it large enough to accomodate the northbound lanes of I-5. It was about 100 feet in length and had stalagtites (?) from the ceiling. Another towering thumb has a small patch of land around its base upon which a traditional Muslim fishing village has been built on stilts over the water to accomodate high tides. This is home to about 250 people including children. Let's say it's a touristy fishing village because while the men do fish and the women do cook, it is mainly to supply the ten restaurants they have built out over the water in front of the village to accomodate the tourist trade that comes to view the marvelous sights in this wondrous area so well hidden from most of the world. Behind the restaurants but also in front of the village is a large expanse of souvenir and clothing shops. We walked through these to pay a visit to the Panyee Elementary School. The kids ranged from bashful to gregarious and some were quite anxious to test their English skills. It seems that everybody in Asia is learning English as a means of getting better paying jobs in the tourist trade, government, or the import/export business. In Thailand English is mandatory beginning in the seventh grade. We had a great Thai buffet luncheon back at the hotel of departure before heading south for the usual hour of shopping; this time at the Wang Jewelry Emporium and Humongous Souvenir Shop. At least that's what it should be called. The parking lot was full of busses with tourists from Japan, Europe, and India. Of course Joyce found some black pearl earrings she hadn't known she couldn't live without. Then it was back to the ship. On one of our days at sea I plan to write about the ship, the passengers, and its onboard activities. ttfn, Wally
Pumpkin Pie that isn't Pumpkin Well, I have just taken our mock pumpkin pies from the oven, They do smell so good, no pumpkin in them but spices galore, We will enjoy them and Next year maybe more like heaven, My spouse just said, Christmas isn't like home anymore, No Friends, nor children, parents, siblings singing at the door. It is so unlike years ago, with lights, tree, all decorated Presents all to enjoy, bought with money for Love, care awaited, Santa an Angel in closet so long, Musical bells that rang with song, Pretty Collector Disney lights shelved, decorations home made, All tucked away in their beds of tissue, forever so carefully long, No Present for him, none for her, gas to buy, utilities to pay, His leather watch band, my present of repairing, Gorilla glue, For a song, hope it saves it from loosing it's owner, so good, Arose early this AM, to surprise him for a present of whatever, Could be found, saw the watch, so long in need of a new Band. Hopes he likes the pies, You see the old can lost it's label back, Some time, I guessed it to be Pumpkin but yams it came in hand, Added some blendered pineapple for enough, then other stuff, Finished the crusts, prayed they would turn out flakey & right, Baked and smell so nice. Will find more tomorrow to please, And fix a dinner as whatever we have left on hand, to enjoy, Then TV programs for us on 6 channels old antenna, can get, Think about yesteryear when better times we had, with family, No longer close ,and money to enjoy a Holiday, then with med's, We could buy, to ease our aches and pains, now we do without, And pray for Heavenly Father to spare us awhile, as he won't, Take us till we are needed in that better place up yonder. Christmas it seems is not just the Christ Child but as the word Christ is slowly being ripped from our Ancestor's made Country, Pray that it survives the turmoil it fights and we live on with delight. Must go to bed with the sugar plums in my head tonight, dancing with all good fun and await the morning light for Christ was born Long ago to help us become what he has wanted us for. Happy Christmas and a glorious New Year ahead for all of Us. Remember our brother's and sister's in far away lands, helping to save other's as best they can. Pray for families left behind, and those alone forever more. A grateful senior awaiting the next day every day. Happy Holidays to all. Genealogy is life saving , interesting rewarding, meeting those relatives who have jumped up from our ancestors.

She was born in Laurel County > Ky to Stephen and Martha Hensley. I don't even have > her date of birth. First, you do have more information on her that would be helpful. She died as Bradshaw, do you know her husbands name? That would help. You do have an Estimated date of birth. For example, as a great aunt, she would have been a sister to your grandfather/mother. (identify him/her). When was he/she born? In 1900, 1920, 1940? That would help. Giving her parents was great. Info on them would have helped also. Also, since you are looking for her in Washington State, is that where you believe she died? Any suspected area's? Someone could do research in City Directories. Next, you need to look for people in the Social Security Death Index. Using free websites of: 1. http://www.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=3693 2. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/fto_ssdisearch.html?Welcome=1041564390 3. http://www.familytreelegends.com/records/ssdi The Social Security Administration has the database but only sells them to those that make them available. So depending on which recent sale, you may or may not find someone. The LDS Church also has a great search engine which includes the SSDI, but also much more on individuals "http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp" There is also Ancestry.com. You CAN do free searches after registering. Most of the more dedicated genealogists, amateur or professional subscribe. www.ancestry.com Now then, I find for Bertha Bradshaw 1. SSN 137-22-3384, born 31 Dec 1928, death Mar 1974 in New Jersey. The SSN is also a NJ number. 2. SSN 187-03-7034, born 4 Dec 1903, death Jan 1974. The SSN is from PA, but she died in Washington DC. Did you intend to search DC instead of WA? 3. SSN 518-14-6792, born 10 Apr 1912, died Sep 1986 in Clarkston, Asotin, WA, SSN was from Idaho. The year of death isn't what you had, but this one died in WA. 4. SSN 532-30-8341, born 9 Jun 1900, died June 1982 in Mossyrock, Washington. 5. SSN 579-01-7665, born 25 Dec 1902, died Apr 1979 6. SSN 214-32-2056, died in Maryland 1973. The 1920/1930 census did not identify any information connecting a Bertha Hensley to parents. However, in the 1930 census I found a Martha-born 1886 married to a Samuel and they had a daughter Birtha (with an "i" at least as spelled by the census taker). This Birtha was 9, so born in 1920/1921. Census was taken April 18, 1930. They were living in 8th District, Harlan County, KY. Ancestry.com-Ancestry World Tree entries did identify a Bertha Hensley married to an Earl Bradshaw. They had one daughter married to a Reinkens, with three children. Contact Douglas Deal at deal2reno@aol.com There was an Earl Bradshaw, DOD 22 Mar 1968 in Pierce, Hoquiam County, WA. Use this for help, then provide more info if you can. Ron Bestrom

Marvin Anderson was in the navy in 1960 in washington state. He was married to my birthmother and they had 6 other children. 2 or 3 of them were probably born in washington but I don't know the years. They would have lived in a county close to a naval base and one of the children would have been in 3rd or 4th grade when I was born.

There is website with info regarding the House of Good Shepard. It was the Sisters of the Good Shepard who ran it (Sorry for the mistake) www.HistoryLink.org Roberta
Right, the Home of Good Shepard was/is a home for unwed mothers. I'm not sure as of this date if it is still running, but it was is 1970. I think it was run by the Sisters of Providence, or possibly the Sisters of the Sacred Heart. ----- Original Message ----- From: <denisemcobb@msn.com> To: <WASHINGTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 18, 2004 9:24 PM Subject: [WASHINGTON-L] Re: CONVENTS FOR GIRLS? 1914 MAYBE > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/CCC.2ACE/2905.1 > > Message Board Post: > > The Good Shepard Home or House of Good Shepard, I don't remember the exact > name. In abt 1907 to abt 19010 thereabouts, My Granmother died leaving 7 ch. Granpa. had put them in a home in Winlock, lewis Co.Wa. wxcept for the 2 girls. Saddie b in 1899, abt 6 and Hazel abt 12. They went to the St Mary's convent in Toledo in country as the church there also has a cem. One of the Nuns spanked the little one, Saddie and my Aunt Hazel abt 12.yrs. lit into her and several other's and beat them up some for them spanking Sadie. They then sent both to Seattle. I was told that where they went had sometime later that the Convent and home for homeless ch. had burned down. I was going to try to get info from the records but that is what I was told. Unkown the name of it but was going in abt 1910 +and - as they ere there for abt 4 to 5 yrs. I think. My Aunt Hazel told me this herself. Hazel was red headed and somewhat stern and hot headed as I remember her. She didn't believe in spanking eitheras her mother never spanked them. You are not only not giving any needed information; but also giving very misleading information. You are looking for Thomas Baker, who is really Neil Thomas Baker. He died in 1994; but your mother said he died in World War 2. This person was a brother of Darl B Baker, is that spelled Daryll? Is Darl/Daryll still alive, where is he living, or where was he living? Is your mother related to these two? Is your mother still alive? If so, ask her for information. If not, is there ANY other living person that is related to any of these people that you can ask questions? WHERE were they born? You are writing to the Washington List...but were they from Washington? I looked for Neil Thomas or Thomas Neil Baker without any findings in 1930 census of someone born in 1921. If he REally died in 1994, where? Can someone get his obituary? If your mother was related When and Where was she born? That will help in census reviews to find her siblings. If there is ANY family members, ask them first. Get the local information, then give ALL of the info you have. Otherwise...good luck. Ron Bestrom
