Thought you might like to know about the places I visited. I attended church (the "new" church built in 1870's after the original church was torn down in the middle of the night-there were conflicts among the membership. In speaking with the lady who wrote the little book on St. Peter's (cannot locate it just now for her name), she indicated the font, chalice and a small stained-glass window in an inside door as all being a part of the "old" church. A block away is the entrance tower, the only part left of the original building. I also had lunch in "Hobnails Inn" pub located in Little Washbourne...this building is supposedly the manor home of Sir Roger de Washbourne, named in the Doomsday Book. The bar man will ask if you are related to the Bengeworth Washburns or the Little Washbournes? (I said "both", not really knowing at the time), then he pointed out the "declaration" of the Doomesday Book in the second room. He suggested that I might like to visit St. Mary's Chapel just down the road and loaned me the keys. What a pleasure I derived from just being there and imagining life several hundred years ago. There are other Washburn places mentioned in "Some Notes on the Evesham Branch of the Washbourne Family" by E.A. B. Barnard, F.S.A., published 1914. And other interesting reading material is "Washburn Family Foundations in Normandy, England, and America" by Mabel Thacher Rosemary Washburn, 1953. Both will give a good back- ground for visiting the area. Lucky you! AA of Great Britain (same as our "AAA") publishes a great Atlas. You should have a map of the area. I'd like to hear from you sometime. Good luck with your medical test. Marilyn Washburn Powell, desc. of WILLIAM of Long Island, immigrant. Orange, TX [email protected] .
