    3. Sue, This is the information I have on William WASHBURN of Stratford, CT and Hempstead, LI. Most of the information is from a book by Mabel Thacker Rosemary Washburn, "Washburn Family Foundations" published in 1953, and some correspondance with Jud Hoffman on Compuserve. I think that there may also be more information in the Richard WASHBURN book, but I can't remember. Your William Washburn was the youngest son of John Washburn and Martha (Timbrell) (Stevens) Washburn of Bengeworth. There are references to original documents in this book. Jeanne 1. William Washburne shows up in Stratford, Connecticut before 1647, where he was one of the 35 men who accepted the invitation of the first seventeen settlers of that old town to join them. Later accompanied by his son, John, he removed from Stratford to Hempstead, Long Island. This is proven by his name appearing as a freeholder of Hempstead in 1647.
