In 1930 several entire towns' citizens were displaced and their homes and land flooded (Enfield, Greenwich, Dana, and Prescott) in order to dam the Swift river to make the huge Quabbin Reservoir which serves the greater Boston area's water needs. A fascinating book on this subject, "Quabbin, the Lost Valley" by Donald W. Howe, tells of the true cost of Boston's drinking water......lots of pictures and history.
