This is an abstract of the will of Solomon Washburn of Middleborough, MA, dated 26 Aug. 1825, from Plymouth County Probate Records, Vol. 59, from LDS Microfilm #0550910: In the name of God Amen. I Solomon Washburn of Middleborough cordwainer, being weak of body and considering the uncertainty of this mortal life, and being of sound mind and memory First I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Anna Washburn the use and income of all my property to hold to her during her natural life; and after her decease I give and bequeath to my youngest son Lewis Washburn of Middleborough the one half of all my real estate, farming tools and neat stock. Also I give and bequeath to my two granddaughters Anne Hayward and Harriet Hayward (children of my daughter Anne Hayward late of South Bridgewater, deceased) my smallest feather bed with the bedstead and one pair of sheets and one coverlet. And because I have heretofore given something to my son Reuben Washburn of Troy in the State of Vermont, and also assisted and help'd my son Zenas Washburn (late of East Bridgewater, deceased) to some property in time past, therefore I shall make no farther provision for them or their heirs in this my last will and Testament. And as to the other half of my real estate, farming tools and neat stock, after my Executor shall have paid my just debts and funeral charges, then the remainder shall be equally divided between my three following sons, viz. my son Solomon Washburn of South Bridgewater, my son Nahum Washburn of Halifax, and my son Thomas Washburn of Middleborough Also I give and bequeath the remainder of my household furniture to be equally divided between my four following sons, viz. Solomon Washburn, Nahum Washburn, Thomas Washburn and Lewis Washburn And I appoint my son Thomas Washburn aforesaid Sole executor of this my last will and testament. Solomon Washburn Witnesses: Livy Morton Hazael Tinkham Jr. Hazael Tinkham Probated on 1 Nov. 1825, proved in court by Livy Morton and Hazael Tinkham, and son Thomas Washburn was confirmed as executor. Solomon Washburn was born in Bridgewater, MA, on 24 Oct. 1754, the eldest son of Josiah Washburn (Jr.) and Phebe Hayward, who were married in Bridgewater on 3 May 1753. Josiah (Jr.) was the son of Josiah[4] Washburn (Jonathan[3], John[2], John[1] Washburn), and Sarah[4] Richmond (Edward[3], John[2], John[1] Richmond). Phebe Hayward was the daughter of Deacon Thomas Hayward and Bethiah Brett, of East Bridgewater. Solomon Washburn married Anne Mitchell, daughter of Seth and Ann (Latham) Mitchell on 17 Mar. 1773 in Bridgewater. She was born in Bridgewater on 19 Jan. 1755. Solomon Washburn died in Middleborough, MA, on 29 Aug. 1825, "aged 70 years, 10 months, 5 days," and Anne Washburn died a widow in Middleborough on 12 Dec. 1832, "aged 77 years, 10 months, 7 days." The birth of one of the children of Solomon and Anne was recorded in the vital records of Bridgewater, and the baptisms of most of the others were recorded in the vital records of East Bridgewater, but not all of them. This is another case where the will of Solomon proves his children: 1. Zenas Washburn, born ca. 1774, (calculated from his age at death), baptized in East Bridgewater on 26 Sept. 1784, married Lydia Whitman on 3 Feb. 1799 in Bridgewater. Zenas died intestate on 18 Feb. 1824 in East Bridgewater, aged 49 years, of "lung fever," and Alfred Whitman was granted administration of his estate. Lydia died in 1860 in East Bridgewater. 2. Anna Washburn, born ca. 1778, (calculated from her age at death), baptized in East Bridgewater on 26 Sept. 1784, married Rev. Oliver Hayward on 31 Aug. 1797 in East Bridgewater. She died on 22 Feb. 1817 in Bridgewater, aged 38 years, and he died on 26 Sept. 1831 in Titicut, MA, aged 50 years, of "affection of the heart." 3. Solomon Washburn (Jr.), born in Bridgewater on 18 June 1780, baptized in East Bridgewater on 26 Sept. 1784, married Sarah "Sally" Carver on 18 Mar. 1801 in Bridgewater. She died on 17 Dec. 1843 in Bridgewater, MA, aged 63 years, of influenza, and he died intestate in 1850 in Bridgewater. His son, Rotheus Washburn, was granted administration of his estate on 2 Apr. 1850. 4. Reuben Washburn, born ca. 1783, (calculated from his age in the 1850 census), baptized in East Bridgewater on 26 Sept. 1784, was living in Troy, VT, when his father wrote his will in 1825, but was back living with his son, Lewis Washburn, in North Bridgewater, MA, by the 1850 census. I don't know the name of his wife. 5. Thomas Washburn, baptized on 7 Oct. 1787 in East Bridgewater, married Charity Leonard in 1814, and settled in Middleborough. (Her sister married his brother, Lewis Washburn.) Thomas was a mason in the 1850 census in Middleborough, and he died testate on 3 Apr. 1870 in Middleborough, naming his sons Solomon L. Washburn and Jonathan T. Washburn as coexecutors of his will. 6. Nahum Washburn, born ca. 1792, (calculated from his age in the 1850 census), married Anna Mitchell on 25 Dec. 1816 in Bridgewater. She was born in Bridgewater on 3 Apr. 1790, the daughter of John and Anna (Byram) Mitchell, and was a distant cousin of his mother. (Nahum would have been a third cousin of her father, John Miitchell.) They were living in Halifax, MA, in 1825, and in the 1850 census. 7. Osier Washburn, baptized in East Bridgewater on 10 May 1795, probably the unnamed child of Solomon Washburn who was buried in Mar. 1802 in East Bridgewater. 8. Lewis Washburn, baptized in East Bridgewater on 5 Feb. 1797, married Eunice Leonard, sister of his brother Thomas' wife, in 1822, and also lived in Middleborough. He died testate on 21 Sept. 1860 in Middleborough, and named his wife Eunice as executrix of his estate. She died on 23 Feb. 1891 in Middleborough, aged 94. I hope this helps somebody. John A.
