Here is a searchable index and database on Civil War soldiers that I just heard about this morning. It is free right now, for a limited time only. I spent 2 hours in it this morning, and it's great, particularly on Union Soldiers; but a little sparse on Confederate Soldiers. Not only is it an index of soldiers, but a history of the regiment in which they served, a listing of all the other soldiers in each company, along with a small sketch of each soldier. Some contain birth dates and death dates, especially if they died in battle. All contain dates of enlistment and usually age at enlistment. Most contain the name of the town the soldier was from. More detailed descriptions of officers are offered, including dates of promotions. I searched for Washburns, and turned up 111 soldiers from Massachusetts, 14 from Connecticut, 31 from Vermont, 11 from New Hampshire, and 3 from Rhode Island. Maine didn't have its own companies; 1 Washburn from Maine joined a Massachusetts Company. Searches can be done from various aspects. One interesting thing I found was that in looking at all the names of a company in which an ancestor served, I found that his brother and 2 brothers-in-law all served in the same company and enlisted on the same day! I also found that he had been captured and imprisoned, which I had no previous knowledge of. Not everyone I looked for was listed, but with over a million soldiers listed, you should be able to find plenty to keep you busy! Be sure to check out Gen. Cadwallader Colder Washburn's biography under Officers. It even includes a picture of him in uniform!!! >Resent-Date: Sat, 7 Mar 1998 05:22:33 -0800 (PST) >Comments: Authenticated sender is <[email protected]> >From: "Russell Laird" <[email protected]> >Organization: Lackuv 2 Much >To: [email protected] >Date: Sat, 7 Mar 1998 07:28:53 -06:0 >Reply-to: [email protected] >Priority: normal >X-mailer: Pegasus Mail for Win32 (v2.53/R1) >Subject: [LAIRD-L] Great Civil War Site >Resent-From: [email protected] >X-Mailing-List: <[email protected]> archive/latest/118 >X-Loop: [email protected] >Resent-Sender: [email protected] > >If you're looking for Lairds (or anybody else) in the Civil War, check the >following: > >http://www.civilwardata.com > >In the personnel directory there are 192 Lairds listed in the Union Army, >and 11 in the Confederate Army.
