    1. Re: Fw: WASHBURN NATIONAL REUNION
    2. I like the thought of a Washburn family reunion, but the organization behind putting one together is overwhelming to me. Someone has to plan at least my catered luncheon or better yet dinner that everyone will attend. Even though each attendee pays his own way, someone has to contact an establishment, or rent a hall and get a caterer and be responsible for paying the bill. There should be at least one planned activity - visit to an historical site, something just for the fun of getting together with family and interacting (No visiting a cemetery or going to a research facility is no a planned family activity!) The location where the reunion is held needs to have housing facilities equal to the number of people coming, at a variety of prices so that all can afford it. - Which leans things toward a metropolitan area. If you have a dinner, it would be nice to have a speaker for the dinner who could give an entertaining, but information talk on some aspect of the Washburn family. There needs to be some form of organization to get members of the same branch together. Probably broken down by descendants of William, descendants of Phillip and then a series of groups for descendants of each of the children of John Washburn & Elizabeth Mitchell. The first reunion would probably be a simple "long Week-end" affair. Perhaps, Get in on Friday, trip on Saturday, meals on your own, group discussion in the evening. Luncheon with speaker on Sunday and go home. Since the roots of most Washburn's are in New England - I would suspect the first meeting should be there. But for the most part any planning done this year would be for an event in 2001 - most place are now booked with summer vactioners in New England, and then in the fall with the leaf-peeping tours. I wouldn't do it in the winter - I moved out of New England because i didn't like the winters. Anyone belong to other one-name socieities that hold a reunion? What do they do? 3. Hi fellow Washburns, Below is the response from Norlands-Washburn Living History Museum regarding the status of Washburn reunions there. So, it looks like we'll have to plan a reunion on our own. The Huntoon Family Association I belong to is having a meeting in Claremont, New Hampshire in October, and members will check into a local hotel or motel, attend a luncheon, take a field trip and meet for a banquet in the evening. Nothing elaborate and paid for by attendees. A Washburn reunion could be run in such a way and could take place in the east, midwest or west on an alternating basis. Any further thoughts or suggestions? McKinney >Rmckin2383@aol.com > NEHGS > We're not just concerned with old cemeteries, though. Many thousands of small cemeteries on private lands need some form of protection. The 20th century was devastating to small farm cemeteries where urban sprawl has swallowed up the farms along with the cemeteries. There is no respect for the dead when the developers are trying to make money. We have an old, historic civil war cemetery in Redwood City that we've been fighting to save for over 50 years. Every few years the city council comes up with a new plan to bulldoze it under and put up a soccer field or tennis courts or something nice that the public can use, because nobody has the time or the money to keep it looking decent (pulling the weeds, raking up the leaves, etc.) At times in the past it's just been an eyesore, but if you are a descendant of one of the many people buried there, it's the most beautiful cemetery on earth! Luckily we have a very powerful preservation committee in Redwood City who now has volunteers to rake leaves and pull weeds to keep the cemetery presentable, but how long will they be able to keep the developers at bay? We need the cemeteries protected forever in my opinion, and that includes protection from rail and rapid transit easements. In Colma, CA, where all the San Francisco Cemeteries were relocated to, the BART Rapid Transit is going under the cemeteries so as not to disturb the stones, since there is no place for them to go around it. That's a good compromise. I urge you to sign the petition before the cemetery your ancestors were buried in is turned into a parking lot or tennis courts. Then pay attention to who you are voting for. John A. Maltby Redwood City, CA jamaltby@creative.net

    2. Good morning list friends, I am working with my son-in-law to get the England Washburn photos from the negatives, to a CD, to his web site. It might take awhile, but as soon as this is accomplished I will let everyone know how to access them. The photos will have a full description with them at that time. My son-in-law, who knows far more about computers than myself, thought this would easier and more accessible that sending them as an attachment to the list as everyone does not have the same software to handle attachments. Thank you to everyone that has responded thus far with information about James Davenport's Washbourne book and further information, and/or discussion, on the parentage of Luther Washburn who married Sarah Spinning. I truly appreciate all your help. Diane L. (Washburn) Rice in Michigan

Until the cause is championed by someone with power and has the following of the many...Congress will do nothing. Living near D.C. I see it everyday it is the stuff of our "local" news. 3. I am trying to verify what I believe to be the ancestors of Philo Washburn who married Harriet White on 16 February 1826 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts. I have the following: 1) Philo born 13 April 1799 in Middleborough, Plymouth County, Massachusetts (probably the Titicut parish -- now North Middleborough). He married Harriet White daughter of Apollos WHITE on 16 February 1826 in Raynham, Massachusetts (town next to Middleborough) 2) Benjamin (father of Philo) born about 1752 at Middleborough. Married Alice SHAW on 6 August 1776 3) Jonathan (father of Benjamin) born about 1728 at Bridgewater Massachusetts. Married Judah WOOD on 23 May 1751 4) Benjamin (father of Jonathan) born about 1690 at Bridgewater. Married Bethiah Kingman in 1713/1714 5) Samuel (father of Benjamin) born about 1652 at Bridgewater. Married Deborah Packard about 1677 6) John (father of Samuel) born 26 November 1621 at Bengeworth, England. Married Elizabeth Mitchell 7) John (father of John) born 2 July 1597 in England. Married Margaret Moore in 1618 Any help in proving or disproving the above information would be greatly appreciated. 2. John, I find no evidence that ANY Washburn family was in Deerfield, MA as early as 1757. For those interested in the discussion of Luther Washburn it would be best if ALL read the Mayflower Descendant article that appeared in vol. 42 no. 1 Jan 1992 we will at least then be discussing the same thing. Keep in mind what we are discussing is NOT who are the parents of Luther Washburn who married Sarah Spinning what we ARE discussing is Who is Luther Washburn, the son of Jonathan Washburn and Rebecca Perkins? Susan, This is the first that I've heard that this has been proven. I would be very interested in the proof that you mention. (Your sources.) I've seen both of the references that you give, the birth record and the marriage record. But how has it been proven that the Luther Washburn in the birth record is the same "Luther" who married Thankful Geer? Couldn't he have as well been the Luther Washburn who married 1 July 1779 at Ashfield, MA to Sarah Spinning? Did you find Probate records? Wills? Deeds? Whatever you have would certainly be a significant find if it's true. Would you mind sharing it with us? You (and others) might want to read my 15 year old notes on Luther Washburn of Deerfield, MA, Ashfield, MA and Oneida Co., NY and his descendants. (His ancestry is not addressed here.) This chronology is posted at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nylewis/weiman.htm Luther Washburn is NOT my ancestor; but I do have an interest in finding the solution to this mystery. We know that Luther WASHBURN of Oneida Co. was born 24 Mar 1757 Deerfield, MA (parents apparently yet unknown), died 13 Sep 1848 Lee, Oneida Co., NY, m. 1 July 1779 at Ashfield, MA to Sarah SPINNING, born 4 Mar 1761, dau. of Nathaniel and Thankful (BENTON) SPINNING. I have seen it quoted on this list, but have not had >time, as of yet, of read it and check out its documentation. > >Diane (Washburn) Rice > The book that Chuck Washburn has made reference to is called "Some Notes on the Evesham Branch of the Washbourne Family," by E.A.B. Barnard, F.S.A., published in Evesham, England, in 1914. Mr. Barnard was a highly respected English genealogist in the early part of this century. It is a very good study of the Washborne family from Bengeworth, and is highly recommended to all. It is available as a reprint from Higginson Books: http://www.higginsonbooks.com/ The 3 May 1517 will of John Washborne of Wichenford in transcribed in full in Davenport's book on pages 32-33, and the Latin Inquisition Post Mortem is on page 33. If you read them carefully, you'll see that he does not mention a son named John in his will, although he does mention other sons. His heir was his grandson John Washborne, son of his deceased eldest son Robert Washborne, who inherited the estate and raised a family there. I'd love to find the connection to prove that John Washborne of Bengeworth was a son of John Washborne of Wichenford, but Davenport does not prove it in his book, and the will leads me to believe that John of Bengeworth was not a son of John of Wichenford. Also note on a map of Worcester county that Wichenford is on the other side of the county from Evesham and Bengeworth. Barnard notes that there are earlier records of the name Washborne living as a tenant under the Abbot of Evesham in the time of Edward I or Henry III, at least 200 years before our John and Emme Washborne of Bengeworth, and it appears most likely that our Washbornes were descended from these earlier families. Unless we can prove that John Washborne of Bengeworth was a son of John Washborne and Joan Mitton of Wichenford, we cannot claim that ancestry, including Joan Mitton's royal ancestry. Gary Boyd Roberts does not accept the Washburns as royal descendants, and the original Washburn line published in earlier editions of Frederick Lewis Weis' "Ancestral Roots of Sixty Colonists" was dropped in later editions because it had not been proven and was not accepted by our better genealogists. Barnard's study of the Evesham-Bengeworth family was the main reason the royal line was dropped by Weis. Davenport's book is very good, but he does not prove the connection between the two branches, nor does he cite his source for that connection. Barnard's discussion is also very good, and researchers should read both. The line from John Washborne and Margery More back to John and Emme Washborne of Bengeworth has been proven by a chain of baptismal records, marriages and wills that can all be accessed through microfilmed records. Beyond that it has not been proven. John A. Maltby Redwood City, CA jamaltby@creative.net

    3. Hi Susan and Dixie, Thank you for the correction, Susan. I haven't seen this article yet. I don't know of a Washburn family that was settled in Deerfield as early as 1757, do you, Susan? There were no Washburn births recorded in the published vital records of Deerfield. I know that Deerfield originally covered a large area, and that some of the original settlers abandoned town during the French & Indian Wars, so possibly if Luther was born in Deerfield his parents were there only a short time. 1. Luther Washburn and the Lambia Bible Record
    2. Hi Dixie and list, I am also an ancestor of Luther Washburn and Sarah Spinning, through their eldest son, Martin Washburn and his wife Martha Curtis. Luther Washburn, b. 25 Mar. 1757; d. Sept. 1849; m. Sarah Spinning on 1 Jul 1779 in Ashfield, MA. Sarah Spinning b. 4 Apr. 1761; d. 9 Mar. 1839. Both are buried in Hall Cemetery, Town of Lee, Oneida Co., NY. This Luther Washburn fought in the Revolutionary War and received a pension. I have the Brenton Washburne books entitled The Washburn Family in America published in 1997 in 2 volumes and he gives Jonathan Washburn and Rebecca Perkins as Luther's parents. But as you have no doubt recently read on the Washburn List, there seems to be some controversy about Luther's parentage and I have no other documentation to back Brenton's claim. Perhaps more data will come to forward and we will all have a better understanding of this branch of the family. I also have a Bible Record which follows that might be of interest to some of you: From the Lambia Family Bible, Sent from Mrs. Elizabeth Millard of Woodville, NY to Bev Ramsey to Diane Rice. Dear Diane, I have no further use of this so have at it. Don't know if Elizabeth still has the Bible or if she even remembers having it. It has all been up dated in Brent's book. The DAR is supposed to be more helpful today. Maybe they can help you locate books on Rev. War Soldiers. Write to Genealogical Society in towns or states, and county courthouses. I can't tell you how many cemetaries I've searched - now many of them have come up with records. I've been attacked by bees, shot at, and one time fell thru a grave. Too old for that now. 1. James Davenport book
    2. Chuck Washburn
    3. Greetings, Monday 3 July 2000 Yes, the "Davenport book" has created some discussion on this list. I also have a copy of the "James Davenport" book. MY OPINION ONLY: I believe James Davenport was accurate in his written account of the Washburn family, as he was taking his historical account "directly" from an "earlier" written account that was compiled and written by an "earlier" Washburn family historian. That earlier period that was compiled was being documented as events were taking place and were accountable during that period. This "Davenport" record has been in dispute because there are those (I believe) that want to "recreate" the wheel and prove everything that has been previously written. I believe it to be truly accurate. PLEASE NOTE: Now, there was another genealogical author that published about the same time as Davenport, but with a much "narrower" historical account. I think that author (without looking it up) was named Bernard, but not sure here. But, there are those who takes this other written account, with much smaller and with less detail, over Davenport's more detailed written accounts. (Again...only my opinion). This issue opens up much discussion. Again, because Cannon James Davenport took from an "earlier" written record and "recorded" his findings with much more detail for those who followed, as an historian myself, I find it a much more laudable family record. Have a great day!
