Hi, Cousins, I need your help with something. Brent Washburn mentioned a Wellington Washburn, b. ca. 1780 in his second book. I believe he placed him in PA. Could someone provide me with that information, please? I don't have access to either of those books in my area. Does he mention any other Wellingtons born about that time anywhere else? Any details would be much appreciated. Thanks a bunch. Lyn
I have no one in my husbands line by that name. Sue
Thanks for the census information. Sue

His birth was recorded on 29 June 1819 in China, ME. According to the 1850 census, his wife Eliza was born in Ireland in ca. 1824, and they were living in Calais, Washington Co., ME, in the 1850 census. Also living in Calais in 1850 were his brother Charles Washburn, and his parents, Japheth and Sarah Washburn. The is the 1845 will of Henry Washburn of Taunton, MA, from LDS microfilm #0577879 of Bristol County Probate Records. Henry was born in Taunton on 11 Jan. 1783, the son of Isaac(6) Washburn and Mary "Polly" Phillips, who were married in ca. 1777. [Isaac was the son of Jonathan(5) Washburn, Capt. Benjamin(4) Washburn, Samuel(3) Washburn, John(2) Washburn, John(1) Washburn.] Henry married Frances "Fanny" Paddock in Providence, RI, on 3 Aug. 1806, and they lived in Taunton, MA, but the birth records of their children were not in the published Taunton vital records. Henry Washburn died on 18 Aug. 1845 in Taunton, aged 62 years, and luckily he left this will which identifies his children. The will of Henry Washburn I Henry Washburn of Taunton in the County of Bristol do this Eighth Day of May in the year of Our Lord Eighteen hundred & forty five, make this my last Will & Testament in the following manner--viz: First--I give unto my beloved wife Fanny all my Estate both real and personal to hold to her for her use and support so long as she shall remain my Widow--She to pay all my debts and the following named Legacies--viz: To My son Bradford A. - Ten Dollars To My son Henry Jr. - Twenty Dollars To My Daughter Susan L. Dennis Twenty Dollars To my Granddaughter - Harriet L. Washburn - Daughter of Bradford A. aforesaid - Ten Dollars To my Grandson - Joseph H. Bridge - Ten Dollars And finally I order that whatever of my Estate may remain when the aforesaid Fanny shall cease to be my Widow, Shall descend--one half part thereof to my son Henry-aforesaid, and the other half part thereof to my Daughter Susan Dennis-aforesaid, to hold to them their heirs and assigns forever, they the said Henry and Susan to pay Twenty Dollars Each - annually - to my son Bradford A. during his natural life. And lastly I appoint my wife Fanny sole Executrise of this my last Will & Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal the Day & Year above written. Henry Washburn Signed, Sealed and declared by said Washburn to be his last Will, in presence of us who subscribed our names as Witnesses thereto in his presence Joseph Wilbar Eben Dawes Saml C. Crocker The will of Henry Washburn was exhitibed in court on 2 Sept. 1845 by Fanny Washburn, the executrix, and was proved by Joseph Wilbar, Ebenezer Dawes and Samuel L. Crocker on 4 Nov. 1845. William Washburn of Taunton and Adino Paddock of Freetown were her sureties on her bond. Joseph Wilbar, Thomas C. Brown and William Reed, all of Taunton, were appointed to appraise the estate of Henry Washburn on 4 Nov. 1845, and the inventory was dated 14 Nov. 1845. His real estate totalled $10,917.00, which included a lot and building on Broad Way worth $2200, the "Old Homestead" worth $3300, a Cottage Lot and Buildings worth $4500, and an "undivided eleventh part of the Isaac Washburn estate on the north side of main street" worth $600. Son Bradford A. Washburn, probably the eldest son, was born about 1807. He married first to Lydia Williams, of Taunton, on 9 Sept. 1827, and secondly to Harriet C. Burt, of Taunton, on 21 Aug. 1831, and third to Celia S. Barney, of Taunton, on 19 Apg. 1835. Bradford and Celia were still living in Taunton in the 1850 census. Son Henry Washburn, Jr., was probably the second or third son. He married Lucretia M. Palmer, of Brooklyn, NY, in 1833. (Marriage intentions 25 Sept. 1833.) A son named Theodore Washburn was buried in Taunton on 11 Aug. 1811, aged 1 year, 8 months. Daughter Lydia C. Washburn was probably the eldest daughter. She married Henry A. Bridge, of Boston, on 15 Sept. 1834. Evidently she must have died by 1845, because she was not mentioned in her father's will. Joseph H. Bridge must have been her son. Daughter Susan L. Washburn was probably the next daughter, and she married John Dennis, of Taunton, on 23 Sept. 1839. A daughter named Caroline Frances Washburn was buried on 4 Sept. 1822 in Taunton, aged 2 years, 10 months, probably the youngest. William Washburn, who was a surety for Fanny Washburn on her bond, was most likely the older brother of Henry Washburn who was born in Taunton on 13 Nov. 1780, and was still alive and living in Taunton in the 1850 census. The other surety, Adino Paddock, may have been her brother. John A. Maltby Redwood City, CA jamaltby@creative.net
Dear Cousins~ This is to let the WILLIAM WASHBURN [immigrant] descendants know that there is conclusive evidence of old William's wife. I will be glad to share the information with those who missed out in receiving the information. Barb Nichols has done considerable research in reading the Sedgeberrow Parish records which provides baptism, marriage and death records for the Nichols of that parish. Even though the marriage record is missing (there are missing years in the parish record), she gathered information on Francis Nichols, his marriage to Francis Wimarke and the baptisms of his several children including Isaac, John and Jane. She has shared her information going several generations back from Francis Nichols and I will be happy share that information with any who request. Barb has also done research in depth on two Francis Nichols and has an article in TAG that Francis Nichols [and wife, Margaret Bruce] are not the parents of Isaac, John and Jane, but the brother of Colonel Richard Nichols, Deputy Govenor of N.Y. "Our Francis Nichols" and wife, Francis came from Sedgeberrow, which is four miles from Evesham in Worchester. We are grateful to John Maltby who first alerted us to Barb's findings. Marilyn W. Nathan Washbon was a physician and a Tory, like most of that profession then, probably because of their education in British schools; [declining] to renounce inherited allegiances was frowned upon and oppressed. Many of them fled to Canada or Nova Scotia, while others moved out into the wilderness seclusion of Western New York. Of these the Washbons, Zeba and Zenas, settled in the Unadilla country in the Butternut Valley and reared large families. Daniel Washburn was the son of Zenas and Mary Cope Washburn.

John Do you have a list of the children of Dr Seth Washburn? Thanks Joseph
This is the short will of Bethiah Washburn, mother of Flora Washburn and her sisters. It goes with my previous posting on the will of Flora Washburn. It is from the probate docket of Bethiah Washburn, also found in LDS Microfilm #0577879, which is Bristol County, Mass., Probate Records. Will of Bethiah Washburn I Bethiah Washburn of Raynham in the County of Bristol, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life, and being of sound mind and memory, blessed by God therefor, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, viz.- First, I give my body to its kindell dust to be decently buried in hope of a glorious Resurrection on the last Day. Secondly, I give one fifth part of my wearing apparel, and one fifth part of all the real Estate of which I may die seized, to the daughters of the late Debby Thompson wife of Rev. James Thompson of Barre, and the other four fifths of it, to be equally divided between my four Daughters, viz. Stella, Flora, Julia and Amelia. If it be the will of Divine Providence that I should survive any or all of my married daughters, my Will is that the portion designed for them, shall be given to their daughters- And lastly, I hereby appoint my two Daughters viz. Stella Deane and Flora Washburn Executrixes of this my last will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the Eighteenth day of March in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty-seven. Bethiah Washburn Signed, sealed, published and declared by the above named Bethiah Washburn to be her last Will and Testament, in the presence of us, who have hereunto subscribed our Names as Witnesses, in the presence of the testator: Cassini Shaw Clarissa Shaw Nathan W. Shaw The will was first presented in court by Stella Dean and Flora Washburn on 6 Nov. 1838, and was proved in court on 4 Jan. 1839 by the witnesses, Cassini Shaw, Clarissa Shaw and Nathan W. Shaw. Ellis Hall was the surety for Stella Deane and Flora Washburn. Ellis Hall, Cassini Shaw, and Artemus Leonard were appointed to appraise the estate of Bethiah Washburn, late of Raynham, on 28 Feb. 1839, which was valued at $745.00. Dennis Rockwell was granted power of attorney to sell a portion of the real estate interest of Bethiah Washburn on 6 Feb. 1863 at the home of Flora Washburn, which consisted in an undivided eighth part of a tract of wood and meadow land of about 20 acres, the said share belonging to William H. H. Deane and others, minors and children of Charles F. Deane, deceased. The heirs that signed were difficult to read, but appear to be: Wm H.H. Dean, Chas W. Dean, Davie U.A. Dean, Nancy S. Dean, Eloise A. Dean, Nolan? M. Dean, Stella M. Dean, & John M. Dean of Chicago, minors, under the guardianship of Eloise A. Dean of Chicago. Bethiah Washburn was the widow of Dr. Seth Washburn, of Raynham. (See my previous email.) John A. Maltby Redwood City, CA jamaltby@creative.net
Tom, I don't remember whether you had already seen the will of Flora Washburn or not. You sent me a transcription of her obituary some time back. LDS Microfilm #0577879 is a film of original probate dockets from Bristol County, Mass., and one of the dockets it that of Flora Washburn. Here is what it has: The will of Flora Washburn, 1863 I Flora Washburn of Raynham in the County of Bristol. Aware of the uncertainty of this mortal life-and being of sound mind, thanks to the source of all good for the same, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament, in manner and form following, viz. 1st I give bequeath to Mr. Dennis Rockwell and Helen M. Rockwell, my niece, the use and improvement of my dwelling house, and all the buildings around it, and the land I own in this part of the Town, and the horse and carriage, as long as they may wish to make this their home. When they shall cease to occupy this home, then may it be sold, and the proceeds divided equally between my sister Amelia, and the daughters of all my sisters. 2d I give bequeath to the sons of all my sisters & to each one the sum of one hundred dollars. 3d I give to the widow of Philo Thompson one hundred dollars. 4th I give bequeath to Charles Dean's widow one hundred dollars. 5th I give bequeath to Flora Washburn the daughter of brother Frank my namesake, one hundred dollars. 6th I give bequeath to my sister Amelia, and the female heirs of all my sisters, all the residue and remainder of my real, and personal proprety and estate of which I may die seized, wheresoever situated, and of whatever description and not herein otherwise disposed of-to be equally divided between the above mentioned heirs, my sister, Amelia, and the female heirs of each sister whether living or deceased. In witness whereof, I the said Flora Washburn have hereunto set my hand, and seal this thirty first day of July, In the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty three. Flora Washburn Signed, sealed, published, and declared by the aforesaid Flora Washburn to be her last Will and Testament in the presence of us, who have hereunto subscribed our names-as witnesses-in the presence of the testatrix. Cyrus Leonard Carrie M. Leonard Lucy B. Leonard Dennis Rockwell, of Raynham, Massachusetts, filed a notice in court on 6 March 1866 that Flora Washburn of Raynham died on 23 Feb. 1866, and that the following persons were her heirs at law and next of kin, and petitioned that Henry H. Crane, of Raynham, be granted administration with will annexed of the estate of Flora Washburn: Amelia James, wife of Josiah L. James of Chicago, Illinois, sister Louisa M. Jenkins, wife of James W. Jenkins Jr., of Barey, Mass., niece Lydia T. Bryant, widow of Walter A. Bryant of Bary, Mass., niece James M. Thompson of Jamaica Plains, nephew Alexander T. Thompson, Worcester, Mass., nephew Frederick W. Leonard & Isaac E. Leonard of Pekin, Ill., nephews Julia M. Chapin, wife of E. J. Chapin, Chicago, Ill., niece Margaret W. Ward, niece Helen B. Washburn of Chicago, Ill., niece Flora B. Washburn of White Oak Springs, Wisconsin, niece Helen M. Rockwell, wife of your petitioner, niece Henry H. Crane, of Raynham, was granted administration with will annexed of the estate of Flora Washburn, of Raynham, deceased, on 6 April 1866, with Samuel Jones and Adnah Harlow as sureties, and Samuel Jones, Nathan W. Shaw, and Martin White were appointed to appraise her estate, which was valued at a whopping $10,115.26, which included a $2500 share in the Taunton Copper Mfg. Co., a homestead valued at $2100 and stock in the Taunton National Bank and the Bristol County Bank, as well as U.S. Bonds. There is no final accounting of Henry H. Crane filed in the docket listing the amount each heir received, unfortunately. Flora Washburn was the daughter of Dr. Seth Washburn and his wife Bethiah Shaw, who were married at Taunton on 16 Jan. 1781. The birth records of the children of Seth and Bethiah Washburn were not recorded in the published vital records of either Taunton or Raynham, MA, so these probate papers are important in proving relationships. Dr. Seth Washburn was born on 29 Sept. 1761 in Raynham, the son of Capt. Israel(5) Washburn (Jr.) and Leah Fobes, who were married at Bridgewater, MA, on 3 Jan. 1739/40. His Washburn ancestry extends back through Israel(4) Washburn, Samuel(3) Washburn, John(2) Washburn, to John(1) Washburn, of Plymouth Colony. John A. Maltby Redwood City, CA jamaltby@creative.net
