    1. Isaiah Washburn - Revolutionary war pension
    2. In searching for clues as to who is his descendant and who may not be one of the doucments I reviewed was the microfilm of the revolutionary War Pension of Isaiah Washburn who enlisted at Ashfield, MA. He moved to Georgia, Franklin Co., VT and then late in life moved to Hadley, MA where he lived with his married daughter. It is in Hadley, MA that both Isaiah Washburn Sr and his wife Patience die. There are times when the contents of the file is "pre-abstracted" for us. This occurs when a request for information was received and the examiner who was in charge of responding too the request went through the file and wrote a letter in response to the inquiry. It is often easy to obtain the original source of the information by going through the file. But sometimes these response letters indicate that papers that once were in the file, are there no longer, or at least are not microfilmed. [NOTE: My request to see the original file was denied.] Here is the letter from the file [] = source document for statement Apr 26, 1940 Mrs. M.E. Rawlings 4540 Perry Way Sioux City Iowa Dear madam: Reference is made to your letter in which you request the Revolutionary War record of Isaiah Washburn of Franklin County, Vermnt. The data furnished herein were obtained FROM PAPERS ON FILE IN CLAIM FOR PENSION [caps are mine] W. 14080. based upon service of Isaiah Washburn, in the War of the Revolution. Isaiah Washburn was born in the year 1749, in Strafford, Connecticut. The names of his parents were not given. [Declaration 2 Aug 1832 of Isaiah Washburn] While a resident of Ashfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts, Isaiah Washburn enlisted sometime in may 1775, served eight months as private in Captain Webber's company, Colonel John Fellows' Massachusetts regiment; during this service he was stationed at Roxbury and Dorchester, while at Dorchester, he was sent with several others to the Light House in Boston harbor, there surprised and captured about thirty-two prisoners and took them to General Washington's Camp in Cambridge. He enlisted sometime in August or September, 1776, served four months in Captain Agrippa Wells' company, Colonel Samuel Brewer's massachusetts regiment, marched to ticonderoga and to Mount Hope, was in the battle of Valcour Island. He enlisted sometime in August, 1777 marched to Pownal, Vermont, reaching there the day after the battle of Bennington, was engaged in scouting for two months, names of officers not given [Declaration 14 Sep 1833 of Isaiah Washburn] the soldier, Isaiah Washburn, moved from Ashfield, Massachusetts, to Georgia, Franklin County, Vermont. He was allowed pension on his application exexcuted August 2, 1832, then a residient of Georgia, Vermont, where he had lived "more than twenty years" [Declaration 14 Sep 1833 of Isaiah Washburn] He had moved in 1836 to Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, to live with his "only child" name not stated [NOTE see below] He died February 21, 1839, at the home of George Hibbard in Hadley, Masachusetts. [Statement of George Hibbard 24 may 1839] Isaiah Washburn married September 3, 1772, Patience Perkins; they were both then of Ashfield, Massachusetts. the date and place of birth of Patience Perkins, and names of her arents were not given.[Declartion 24 May 1839 of Patience Washburn] & statement of Ashfield town clerk] the widow Patience Washburn, was allowed pension on her application executed May 24, 1839, at which time she was living in Hadley, Massachusetts, aged ninety four years. [File Jacket patience Washburn file] George Hibbard in 1839 aged about fifty-nine years, and a resident of Hadley, Massachusetts, stated that he married the only daughter of the soldier, Isaiah Washburn, but he did not give her name. [ Statement of George Hibbard 24 May 1839] te papers on file in this claim contain no further discernible data in regard to family. In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, name and address of person paid, and possibly the date of death of the widow, Patience Washburn, you should apply to the Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Division, this city and furnish the following data Patience Washburn, widow of Isaiah Washburn Certifiate #....... Very truly yours A.D. Hiller Executive Assitant to the Administrator Explanation of {NOTE see belows] when the letter of Mrs Rawlings was answer on April 26, 1940 there was more paperwork in the file than at the time it was microfilmed [or conceivably the microfilmer could have missed something. NO papers in this file show the move of Isaiah Washburn to Hadley, MA. He certainly would have written the pension board in 1836 wnen he left Vermont and went to MA. I would want to continue to receive his pension... But none of that paper work is in the file. Including the one where he states that he moven in 1836 to Hadley Hampshire County, Massachusetts, to live with his "onlly child". only child is in quotes because it is as Isaiah wrote it. He did not say "only daughter" The reason this is important is that it lends further support to the premise that the only surviving children of Isaiah and Patience Washburn were Isaiah Jr and daughter Susan Washburn [ who married George Hibbard] There are a group of us searching for the proof of parentage of Samuel Washburn who married Diadama WRIGHT and moved from Georgia, VT to Saratoga Co., NY I don't think that Isaiah Washburn is his father. No land, military, probate records have been found that support this premise. Isaiah Sr. himself has said that his only surviving child in 1836 was living in Hadley, MA. It is more likely that Isaiah Washburn is the UNCLE of Samuel Washburn, rather than his father. I am in the process of analysising the land, probate and military records of the Washburns in this area and hope to complete that analysis soon. If I were to set forth an hypothesis of where to search I would suspect it is more likely that Isaiah's brother Samuel was the father of Samuel Washburn. Susan Bingler Fairfax, VA

    3. Lyn, You might want to check "The Richard Washburn Family Genealogy" published 1927 by Ada Haight. This could be the ancestor of the Abijah Washburn you are looking for. This Richard Washburn was a son of John and Hannah Hallett/Thorneycraft and was brother to my Joseph. Richard names a son, Joseph in his will - the will was probated 5 June 1786. The information goes no further in the book I have which follows Joseph on down. (It is unsure WHICH Hannah was Richard's mother). Marilyn W. 2. Rich I found the book copy of the Minnesota Historical Collections either at the National Genealogical Society Library in Arlington, VA or at the DAR Library in Washington, D.C. Both institutions have their catalogs on line so you can check to see who owns what. Most of my research is done in research institutions rather than on the internet. I use the internet for clues but there is great value in seeing the original document. Even what I noted as a source is not an original document, but a compilation from other sources in the case of Emma and her brother the "Collections" got this from "Austin Souvenir, by H. O. Basford, 52 paes, 1896. Austin is in Mower County, MN. I don't know if Mower county has an historical society, but they do have a Genealogical Society Mower County Genealogical Society P.O. 1. Will of John S. Washburn, 1842
    2. John Maltby
    3. This is the will of John S. Washburn of New Bedford, Mass., from LDS microfilm #0577879. John Spooner Washburn was born probably in Dartmouth, MA, in about 1783, the son of Lettice Washburn and his second wife, Sarah Spooner, to whom he married on 24 Jan. 1782 in Dartmouth. The birth record of John S. Washburn was not recorded in the vital records of Dartmouth, but his father is proven by an 1827 deed of land in Bristol County from Lettice Washburn to his son John S. Washburn, found in Bristol County Deeds 122:254. John S. Washburn is the ancestor of Barbara Washburn-Lienhard, formerly of this Washburn mailling list, who is now travelling, and I'll forward a paper copy of this to her, but I thought that others might also be interested. John S. Washburn married Desire Omans, of New Bedford, MA, on 19 Aug. 1804 in New Bedford. The will is interesting because although he names his wife, Desire, he names only his two youngest children, none of the others. Finally on the very last document in the folder is the list of the other children, who sign their agreement to the final accounting of Alfred Nye, the executor. This is found on one of the "loose papers" in the probate folder of John S. Washburn, and was probably not recorded in the court probate books, so one who was searching the court records wouldn't find this. You would have to check the loose papers within the probate file to find it. Luckily the LDS Church has microfilmed these loose probate papers for us! Here is the will: "Be it remembered that I John S. Washburn of New Bedford in the County of Bristol being weak in body but of sound mind and memory do on this fifth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty two make and publish this my last will & testament in manner and form following, that is to say First, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Desire Washburn the use and improvement of all my Estate both Real and Personal wherever the same may be found after my Just debts shall be paid, and if through sickness or infirmity my Widow shall be unable to support herself out of the improvement aforesaid, Then my will is that she sell such portions of my personal or real Estate as she may think proper in order to afford her a comfortable support, and I hereby fully authorize and impower her so to do and if she shall sell real Estate to make & execute good and sufficient Deeds therefor, And my will further is that if my Widow should decease before my Son Stephen and Daughter Nancy arrive to lawful age then that the said Stephen and Nancy should have the same improvement herein given to my Widow (excepting however the right to sell any portion of my Estate) Secondly, My will is that at the decease of my Widow and after my two Children Stephen & Nancy as aforesaid shall arrive to lawful age that all my Estate both real and personal be equally divided among all my Children as an absolute Estate to them their heirs and assigns forever. Lastly, I do hereby appoint and Constitute Alfred Nye Sole Executor of this my last will & testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day & year within written. John S. Washburn Signed, sealed, pronounced and declared as and for his last will & testament in the presence of us who at his request and in his presence and the presence of each other have hereunto set our names as witnesses to the same Jonathan Danforth William Spooner Seth Howard Jr. June 7, 1842, approved" The will was presented in court by Alfred Nye on 5 April 1842, and proved on 7 June 1842 by Jonathan Danforth, William Spooner and Seth Howard Jr. The bond of Alfred Nye, executor of the will of John S. Washburn, was dated 7 June 1842, with Cyrus E. Clark and Hananaih C. Wing, all of Fairhaven, as sureties. William Spooner and William Hathaway of New Bedford, and Alden Spooner of Fairhaven were appointed to appraise the estate of John S. Washburn of New Bedford on 28 April 1842. The real estate was valued at $1425, including the homestead at $1200 and a lot in Weston Town at $200. His personal estate was valued at $718.50. Alfred Nye, executor, made oath to the inventory on 7 June 1842. The accounting of Alfred Nye, executor of the estate of John S. Washburn, was dated 5 Feb. 1850, and the heirs at law of John S. Washburn signed their agreement to the accounting on a separate paper in the probate file: William Washburn James Washburn Sarah Hathaway Nancy Washburn Betsey D. Fuller Reuben Washburn Of the children of John S. Washburn and Desire Omans, William Washburn was still living in Fairhaven, MA, in the 1850 census, with his wife, Sarah. James Washburn married Elizabeth Winslow Hathaway on 23 Jan. 1842 in New Bedford, and was living in New Bedford in the 1850 census. Sarah Washburn married Capt. William Hathaway of New Bedford in 1837, and they were living in Fairhaven, MA, in the 1850 census. Nancy Washburn was still unmarried and living with her sister Sarah Hathaway and her husband in the 1850 census, while her brother, Stephen, named in the will, must have died unmarried before the 1850 accounting, since he did not sign. Betsey D. Washburn married first to Benaiah Gilman of New Bedford in 1825, and secondly to Asa Fuller of Freetown, MA, on 11 Apr. 1839, and they were living in Freetown in the 1850 census. Reuben Washburn married Olive (Armsby/Ormsby) Cole, widow of Jason Cole, on 5 Mar. 1837 in New Bedford. Another daughter, Desire Washburn, married John Chase in 1826 in New Bedford or Fairhaven, but she died in 1830, probably childless. Another son, Peter Washburn, also died single in 1836. John A.
