    2. Ebenezer was found in the 1810 census index for VT. That is all I know about him. An Ebenezer was posted to the list for RUTLAND VT in reference to the Church family; this posting was copied out and I will try to see who sent it RUTLAND David Shorey, Robert Perry, Ebenezer Washburn.Someone asked about the legislation ordering people out of Vt. I don't have the wording of the legislation close at hand but I do have a list of those whose estates were ordered Confiscated. I know I have seen the wording of the legislation on this list perhaps someone has it, I do believe it was part of this act. I know it also had something to do with Oliver Church listed being a Secret Service Agent,

Hi, My line is through Ruth Washburn, daughter of Ezra Washburn Sr. and Susanna Leach. After the Revolutionary War, Ezra Sr. and his family moved to Stafford, CT. This included Ruth, her husband Calvin Leach and her brother, William Washburn among others. According to the information, I have, William was probably born in Oakham or Middleboro, MA on 8 Jun 1760 and died in Stafford, CT 11 Nov 1846. He married Lurana Darling and had several children, including a William. William Washburn Sr. served in the Revolutionary war from Oakham, MA but applied for a pension in 1843 as a Stafford resident. If this is the William are looking for, I have more detailed info. Keith Wilson Storrs, CT

    2. Here is an Asa washburn that lived in Leicester MA and then in Vermont. Even if it is not the "correct" one it might give you an idea? Asa Washburn, son of Colonel Seth Washburn, was born in Leicester in 1757, died October 6, 1834. He was a soldier in the revolution from Leicester in 1780-81, in Captain Mathew Chambers' company, Lieutenant Calvin Smith's regiment, and also in 1782, in the Sixth Company. After 1783 he removed to Putney, Vermont, where he became a leading citizen and magistrate. He married Sarah Upham, of Spencer. His children, as far as known to the writer, were: Judge Reuben, born 1781, in Bridgewater, a very prominent man; Levi, 1783; James, mentioned below; Seth, lived in Randolph; Jacob, lived in Chelsea; Asa, lived in Putney.

    2. Pardon me for butting in so rudely but I am trying to get some ideas of my wife's Washburn family. What I can tell most of her family from 1850-1860 was from Illinois and Indiana. Her Washburns were from Knox County, Indiana and in East central Illinois. I have noticed there was an ASA Washburn that was from VT that died in Knox County, IN and he seemed to be the oldest Washburn around that area. Anybody have an idea? It's nice to read of the Washburns in the 1700s in Ct. and surrounding states but I need a tie. Her family in question was Thomas Washburn and Sophia Plew who were md in the 1830s in either IL or IN. Thanks for your help in advance. If I can have an idea maybe I can perform some magic!! Bob Pruitt s. of Indianapolis, IN

Capt. John Sherman's first wife, Lydia Washburn, is one of those unidentified female Washburns who has been difficult to place. After Lydia died, in 1784, Sherman remarried to Anna Washburn, eldest daughter of Peter and Abigail (Pope) Washburn, of Dartmouth, in ca. 1786, probably in Dartmouth (marriage intenions recorded in Dartmouth on 29 Dec. 1785.) She is proven a daughter of Peter Washburn by his will, dated 20 Mar. 1806, and probated on 7 Oct. 1817, where he mentioned the heirs of his deceased daughter Anna Shearman, namely Ebenezer Shearman, Ruben Shearman, and Thurston Shearman. Anna (Washburn) Sherman had died on 26 May 1791, aged 36 years, and John Sherman had remarried again to Mary Church, of New Bedford, on 29 Dec. 1796, who died 26 June 1799, and he married his fourth wife, the widow Charlotte (Marshall) Russell, of Nantucket, in 1800. Peter Washburn, the father of Anna Washburn, was the eldest son of Moses Washburn and Hannah Cushman, who were married in Kingston, MA, on 23 May 1727. Peter was born in Bridgewater, MA, on 16 June 1728. There is a strong likelihood that Lydia Washburn, the first wife of Capt. John Sherman, was also a daughter of Moses Washburn and Hannah Cushman, born probably after their move from Bridgewater to Taunton, MA, but not recorded in the vital records there. Two other sons, Bezaleel Washburn and Thomas Washburn have already been identified as sons of Moses Washburn and Hannah Cushman through Bristol County deeds, born most likely in Taunton in the early 1740s. Unfortunately Moses Washburn left no will when he died in Dartmouth, MA, which identified any of his daughters, so at this point only his sons can be proven through deeds, but Moses appears to have been probably the only Washburn patriarch living in Dartmouth, MA, in the period leading up to 1767 when Lydia Washburn was married to John Sherman. Hannah (Cushman) Washburn was still alive in 1750, when she joined her husband, Moses Washburn, in selling their homestead in Taunton to Nathaniel Gilbert, in exchange for a farm in Dartmouth. Although Hannah would have been 43 years old when Lydia was born, which is certainly not impossible, it would mean that Lydia was probably the youngest child of Moses and Hannah Washburn if she were indeed a daughter of theirs. Deeds executed by John Sherman in Bristol County need to be closely examined to see if there might be any further link between the families of the sons of Moses and Hannah Washburn and that of John and Lydia Sherman, and I have not done this yet. I think there is a good chance the identity of Lydia can be solved with a little more research. If it does turn out that Lydia was a daughter of Moses Washburn, then John Sherman's second wife, Anna Washburn, was actually the niece of his first wife. Rich, please let me know what else you have found so far. Have you discovered the parents of Capt. John Sherman? Have you researched any of his Bristol County land records? John A. 1. 1863 Will of Otis L. Washburn
    2. John Maltby
    3. This will is an addendum to the 1824 will of Oliver Washburn of Raynham, MA, that I posted to the list last month. Some of the best wills I've found, genealogically, are those of bachelors. Otis L. Washburn was born in Raynham, MA, in about 1795, according to his age in the censuses, to Oliver Washburn and Sarah "Sally" Liscomb, who were married in Raynham on 17 Jan. 1788. Since the birth records for the children of Oliver and Sally Washburn were not recorded in the vital records, they must be pieced together from other sources. The 1823 will of Oliver Washburn gives us the names and probable birth order of his children, and most of their birth years can be estimated from their ages in later censuses. Otis never married, as far as I can tell, and apparently fathered no children. When he died on 11 Oct. 1863, he left a will inwhich he named all his married sisters, as well as a daughter of his deceased brother and a son of one of his sisters. Often the wills of bachelors will give more information about the family structure than the will of a family man. This is from LDS microfilm #0577880, Bristol County Probate Records, from the docket titled "Otis L. Washburn, Raynham, 1863." Otis signed his will in a very shakey hand. "Be it remembered that I Otis L. Washburn of Raynham in the county of Bristol and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, being of sound and disposing mind, do make and publish and declare this my last will and testament. First: = I give and bequeath to my sister, Eleanor Holmes--twenty five dollars. Second = I give and bequeath to my sister Martha Gushee twenty five dollars. Third = I give and bequeath to my sister Mary Snow twenty five dollars. Fourth = I give and bequeath to my sister Charlotte E. Leonard twenty five dollars. Fifth = I give and bequeath to Jane T. Washburn daughter of my late brother, Caleb S. Washburn five hundred dollars. Sixth = I give and bequeath to William Otis Snow son of my sister Mary Snow, all my real and personal property remaining after the above bequests and the payment of my just debts. And, I do appoint William Otis Snow of, Raynham, aforesaid, to be the sole executor of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this sixteenth day of September in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred sixth three. Otis L. Washburn Signed published and declared by the said Otis L. Washburn as his last will and testament in the presence of us, who in his presence and in the presence of each other, at his request, have hereunto set our names as witnesses. Samuel Jones Nancy D. Washburn Sarah S. Wilbur" William O. Snow petitioned for probate of the estate of Otis L. Washburn, of Raynham, on 22 Oct. 1863, stating that he had died on 11 Oct. 1863 leaving no widow as his heir, and listing his next of kin: Eleanor Holmes, wife of Thomas Holmes of Bristol, Rhode Island Martha Gushee, widow of Williams Gushee of Raynham Mary Snow, wife of William Snow of Raynham Charlotte E. Leonard, wife of George Leonard of Marshfield Jane T. W. Champlin, wife of Benedict P. Champlin of Providence, R.I. Bond was posted and the will was probated on 20 Nov. 1863. Another thing noted when comparing the list of children from Oliver Washburn's will and Otis L. Washburn's will is that between 1823 and 1863 several of the children had died, including Oliver's daughters Rhoda, Pamela, and Sarah Washburn, and Oliver's son Caleb S. Washburn. John A.
