Hello List! As you may remember, I a really just beginning my research on the Washburn line of my family, so please forgive any questions that may seem silly to you guys who have been at this for a while. I went to the Family History Center the other night for the first time and looked up the Washburn line on the Ancestral Files. But I'm baffled by something that I saw, and perhaps one of you folks can help me. I was trying to verify the info that has been given me (by a family member) on an Elijah Washburn, b. abt 1725 in Bridgewater. This Elijah was supposed to have a son, Joseph, born in Leicester, MA in 1754. When I looked in the Ancestral file, however, I noted that there have been multiple Elijah's submitted for this particular family, as well as multiple Mary's. One other child, whose name I can't recall, also was a multiple submission. My question: Were there actually mulitiple children with the same name in this family? If not, who is the "real" Elijah Washburn and who were his sons? The volunteer at the FHC was baffled by this, and tho impressed that many individuals had apparently done ALOT of work on this line (the file goes back to the 1200's, I believe), thinks that the problem might be that too many folks have made submissions and not everything is correct. After following this list for the past week, it is obvious to me that you guys seem to have a handle on this. I would appreciate any input you can offer as I do not know how to proceed with getting records that old. Best Regards, Beda Warrick

Corrections to my abstracts of the Bishop's Transcripts of St. Peter's Parish, Bengeworth, Worcestershire, England. This week I have been rereading and checking my abstracts from last week with a stronger magnifying microfilm reader, particularly those years that were difficult to read. I have a couple of corrections to post. First, the baptism of Samuel, the son of Giles Washburn, was in 1615, not 1619. Secondly, I studied the burial date of the "weddow Wasbon" in 1625 carefully, and I am still unsure of the month, but I believe it is most likely September. The first letter is the difficult one. The handwriting for each year is different, and unfortunately there were no other capital S's in the entire 1625 record. The first letter actually looks more like a backwards "B" or a Greek theta than anything else. I compared it with capital S's made in 1622, 1624, and 1626, and it was very different. The second letter definately looks like an "e", and the third letter is right at the edge of the paper; it could be any number of letters that rise up, like an l, b, f, k, or maybe a fancy p, except that very little of the letter drops below. Thirdly, under magnification, the baptism of Sara, daughter of William Washburn, was on March 26, 1626. Fourthly, I double checked the marriage of John Shortazel and Jone Washeburne in 1626. The date is still uncertain. It doesn't look like a roman numeral, instead probably a single digit. I noticed that immediately after the wedding of John Shortazel and Jone Washeburne, was that of Thomas Shorthazel and Elizabeth Pilway? on the first of August 1626. I carefully studied the early baptisms of 1631, hoping to find another child of William Washburn, but did not find any. I also carefully studied the 1637 baptism of Martha, daughter of William Washburn, and determined the date to be the 18th of December. The date was crammed together very tightly on the page, but both the preceeding and following entries were in December, and the "18" is barely readable under magnification. I also noticed in 1637 that one of the churchwardens signing for that year was Thomas Sharthasell. (This was the spelling he used.) I also picked out some entries in the year 1639: Babtisings Mary the Dater of Edward Taylor 6 March Mae the Datter of John Shartasell 16 March Marriages John Shartasell and Mary Phallps 29 of Aperoll Remember, the year started on March 25th, so the marriage of John Shartasell and Mary Phallps/Phelps? occured before the baptism of their daughter Mae the following March. Apparently Jone (Washburn) Shartasell had died, and John Shartasell remarried. I did not find any other baptisms to John Shartasell that occured in the years between 1626 and 1637, but many of these years are missing from the records, so Jone Washburn may have had children. There was also one more year after 1637 on the microfilm that was extremely difficult to read. The handwriting was so bad that even under the larger magnification I could not make out the year, and was only able to guess at maybe half of the names on it. I found one name that looked most likely like Wattson, but I found no Washburns. I again looked carefully to see if I could have missed 1629, but there was no page for 1629 when Mary, daughter of William Washburn, was supposedly baptised. One last thing. The line with the 1624 burial record of John Washburn has an extra word beginning it that I don't know the significance of, that looks like "Oto" or "Otu", so that the line actually reads: Oto Jhn Washeburne buried ye fift of August That's about all I can get out of the Bishop's Transcripts for Bengeworth. I am reaching for straws, but here goes. My 3rd great grandfather Calvin Washburn Pryor who's parents are unknown was born in 1810 in NC. He died in Hannibal, Marion Co., MO Do any of your know of a Pryor\Washburn marriage? Maybe, just maybe his middle name if his mother's maiden name. Kathleen Burnett
My ancestor, William Wright of Putnam Co., NY (b 1744 in Oyster Bay, Long Island), and a descendant of Peter Wright of Oyster Bay) was purportedly married to a Washburn. I have never seen the source of this information, but it may simply have been inferred from the fact that the last of his children was named Samuel Washburn Wright (b 1789). (I am descended from his first-born child, Susannah Wright, b 1767, later wife of one Isaac Lounsberry.) If William Wright's wife was in fact a Washburn, I would guess her father may have been named Samuel Washburn, or at least that she was a part of the Long Island branch of the family descended from William Washburn of Hempstead, Long Island. Does anyone have any information on this elusive ancestor of mine? Dave Morehouse [email protected]

But a genealogy given me by a family >member indicates this Joseph Washburn to be born in 1700 in Plymouth. > Joseph married Hannah Latham, daughter of Robert and Susanna (Winslow) Latham, in ca. 1678. The births of none of their children were recorded in the vital records, but they have been established through other records. The years of their births are all, therefore, approximate: 1. Miles Washburn, born ca. early 1678 in Bridgewater, married Susanna Perry, daughter of Benjamin and Dinah (Swift) Perry, of Sandwich, MA, in ca. 1722. He is believed to have been the eldest son because he served on a jury in Mar. 1698/9. Susanna was born on 27 Dec. 1701 in Sandwich, MA. Joseph Washburn deeded land in Plympton to his son Miles on 4 Aug. 1723. Miles apparently died after 1760, probably in Wareham, MA. 2. Hepzibah Washburn, born ca. 1680 in Bridgewater, married Benjamin Leach, son of Giles and Anne (Nokes) Leach, of West Bridgewater, on 8 Sept. 1702 in Bridgewater. She died 4 Apr. 1750 in Bridgewater, and he died 13 July 1764 in Bridgewater. 3. Jonathan Washburn, born say ca. 1683 in Bridgewater, married Rebecca Perry, daughter of Ezra and Rebecca (Freeman) Perry Jr., on 24 Dec. 1711 in Sandwich, MA. The will of Ezra Perry, of Sandwich, dated 21 Oct. 1728, mentions "the three children of my daughter Rebecca by her husband Jonathan Washburn." On 13 Jan. 1706/7 Joseph Washburn deeded land in Bridgewater to his son Jonathan Washburn, and again on 25 June 1718 and 12 Aug. 1721 Joseph deeded other lands to his son Jonathan. 4. Joseph Washburn Jr., born say ca. 1687 in Bridgewater, married Hannah Johnson, daughter of Isaac and Abigail (Leavitt) (Lazell) Johnson, of Hingham, MA, in ca. 1716. She was born 17 Jan. 1694/5 in Hingham, and moved to Middletown, Middlesex Co., CT, in ca. 1739, then to Leicester, Worcester Co., MA, in 1745, where he died in 1759. On 3 July 1717 Joseph Washburn deeded land to his son Joseph Washburn in East Bridgewater, and more land on 27 Feb. 1719/20. 5. (possibly) Mary Washburn, born ca. 1689 in Bridgewater, married Thomas Perkins, son of David and Elizabeth (Brown) Perkins, on 20 Feb. 1716/17 in Bridgewater. I have no proof that Mary fits into Joseph's family, except that she doesn't seem to fit into any of the other Washburn families. The only clue that indicates she might fit is their naming of a daughter Hepzibah Perkins, a name commonly found among the descendants of Joseph Washburn, but rarely used by the other branches. However, Mary may have been a daughter of Joseph's brother Samuel Washburn instead, because on 5 Nov. 1744 Benjamin Washburn of Bridgewater, gentleman, deeded land to Thomas Perkins in Titicut. This Benjamin was more likely Samuel's son, rather than Joseph's son. 6. Ebenezer Washburn, born say ca. 1692 in Bridgewater, married Patience Miles, daughter of Stephen and Patience (Wheeler) Miles, on 29 June 1721 in New Milford, CT. She was born on 20 Sept. 1704 in Derby, CT, and they lived in New Milford and Kent, CT. He died in Middletown, Monmouth Co., NJ, before 5 Mar. 1762, when his son Jonathan was appointed administrator of his estate. On 6 May 1720 Joseph Washburn deeded land in Bridgewater near the Middleborough line to his son Ebenezer. 7. Edward Washburn, born say ca. 1695 in Bridgewater, married Judith Rickard, daughter of Eleazer and Sarah Rickard, of Plympton, MA, on 20 Apr. 1732 in Plympton. She was born 1 Feb. 1701 in Plympton. He died in Middletown, CT, in ca. 1757. The only surviving paper from his intestate estate was an accounting filed 15 Dec. 1758. On 6 Sept. 1738 Miles and Edward Washburn, of Plympton, sold land in Plympton that thad belonged to their father, Joseph Washburn, and Edward again sold land in Plympton that had belonged to his father Joseph Washburn on 15 Jan. 1740. 8. Ephraim Washburn, born say ca. 1697 in Bridgewater, married Mary Polden/Pollard, daughter of John and Lydia (Tilson) Polden/Pollard, of Plymouth, on 13 Jan. 1725/6 in Plymouth. She was born 28 Feb. 1706 in Plymouth. He died intestate in 1755 in Plympton, MA. No deeds from Joseph to his son Ephraim were found, but Ephraim is listed as a son of Joseph in Col. Seth Washburn's Justice of the Peace Book reprinted in "The Mayflower Descendant" 2:66. 9. Benjamin Washburn, born say ca. 1700 in Bridgewater, married Zerviah Packard, daughter of Israel and Hannah (Crossman) Packard, on 1 Sept. 1740 in Middleborough, MA. There were three Benjamin Washburn cousins living in the Bridgewater area at this time, and sorting them out has been difficult. The son of Joseph was evidently the youngest, the other two being the sons of Samuel Washburn and Jonathan Washburn, Joseph's brothers. Col. Seth Washburn's Justice of the Peace Book also gives Joseph Washburn a son Benjamin. No deeds were found from Joseph to his son Benjamin Washburn. This Benjamin died after 1752, but before 1760. 10. (possibly other daughters Hannah Washburn and Rebecca Washburn. Hannah may have been the Hannah Washburn who married Zachariah/Zachary Whitmarsh, of Weymouth, MA, on 28 Jan. 1729/30 in Bridgewater, and Rebecca may have been the Rebecca Washburn who married David Johnson, son of Isaac and Abiah (Leavitt) Johnson, on 7 Jan. 1719 in Bridgewater.) >This doesn't make sense to me......it seems that 1700 would be WAY to late >for Joseph Sr. to be having Joseph Jr - in his 40's or 50's. > >I know that many of the Washburns in the US are related, but I am wondering >if I have found the right people here or if there is a mistake in the info >I have been given by my relative. > You're in the right place! >I plan to verify all the info given me by this relative, because no sources >were noted. Some of the pages were evidently rolled, because they are very narrow and long, while others are very wide and were folded vertically in half or thirds. The top of page 1 is impossible to read on the microfilm, and had very few entries on it, and page 2 begins with the year 1619, so I found nothing earlier than 1619. Anno Dm 1619 Baptisms 11. Samuel ye Sonn of Giles Washaburne february ye iiiith Anno Dm 1620 Baptized as followeth John ye Sonne of John Washeburne ye xxvith of November Elizabeth ye daughter of Giles Washeburne ye same day (xvith of february) There was no page for 1621. The next page was 1622. 1622 Baptismals Phillipp Wasborne the Sonne of John Wasborne 2h June (The date looks like "zh," but I believe 2h or second was intended. Another entry for someone else had the date z4h, which I took for 24th.) 1622 Burials Phillip Wasborne 7 June The next page was 1625 1625 Burialls The weddow Wasbon 29 Oct. (This would be Martha (Timbrell) (Stevens) Washburn. I'm not sure of the month; it's right at the edge of the paper. It looks like October, but the preceeding entry was 30 Augst, and the following entry was 7 Octobr, so this burial may have been on 29 Sep. instead.) At the bottom of the 1625 page is: Jhon Washborn} Churchwardens Thomas Hide } The next page is 1624 Baphtisings 7. Simon the Sonn of Wm Nickols ye xxvith of Septemb Burials 5. Simon ye Sonn of Wm Nickolls ye xxvii of September 8. Jhn Washeburne buried ye fift of August 12. Robt Moore was buried ye xiiii of January (This is the burial of the "old and blind" John Washburne, father of the immigrants John and William Washburn, and husband of Martha, and possibly also of Robert Moore, father of Margery (Moore) Washburn, wife of the Plymouth Colony immigrant.) The next page is 1630 Baptisings 2. Ruth the Daughter of Willi Nicholas May 13 The next page is 1626 Baptisings 1. Impris Sara the daughter of William Washeborne was baptised March ye 21?/26? (The date could be either. Much of 1626 is very difficult to read.) Weddings 1626 1. John Shortazel e Jone Washeburne were married ye ___ of Mar (The date was unreadable.) The next page is 1632, and has partly deteriorated. The left side of the page has been eaten away by mold or something, and only the dates are left readable, no names. They are the baptisms. The right side containing burials and weddings is readable, but no pertinent entries were found. The next page was 1628, also very difficult to read. The next page was 1631, but beginning being impossible to read, the rest very difficult. No pertinent entries were found in either 1628 or 1631. The next page jumps to 1691, then to 1698, then to 1684, then 1696, then 1685, then 1681, then 1695, then 1699, then 1686, then 1697, then 1668, then 1669, then 1677, then 1692, then 1679, then 1678, then 1675, then 1700, then 1680, then 1690, then 1691?, then 1683, then 1682, then 1689, then 1687, then 1688. Some pages were very difficult to read, and I could have easily missed some Washburn entries, but the handwriting of those in the early 1680s was absolutely beautiful! I found a few Washburn entries in these pages, of only minor interest to American researchers, since they were obviously of a branch that remained in England after our progenitors had already immigrated to New England and New York, but I will list what I found, in proper chronological order: Buryings 1668 Anne Washborne widdow April i Christenings 1677 Jane the Daughter of Joseph Washborne e Martha his wife bpt February ye 10th 1682 Buryings Nov 18, Joh: y: son of Joseph Washborne Buryed 1683 (lots of burials in 1683!) No. 24 Jane ye Daughter of Joseph Washborne 1684 Christenings John son of Joseph Washborne & Marka his wife Oct. 19 Buryed 1686 Nov 1, Joseph Washborne 1687 Buryed Jan 18, Martha wife of Joseph Washborne 1688 Married Oct 21st Joseph Washborne and Martha Garnor 1689 Christened Oct 13, Jane ye Daughter of Joseph Washborn e Martha 1690 (Baptisms) March 22, Jane ye Daughter of Joseph Washborn e Martha his wife I also found many Nichols entries in this period, but I did not copy them down. On the next page, the heading was partly missing and completely unreadable, but it was obviously from a much earlier period. There was one Washburn entry on it: (burials, apparently) 18. Gyles Washbourne the 23 September At the bottom of the page was written, in a different handwriting, (possibly in pencil?), 1636. The next page is 1637 Baptismes Martha thop? the daugher of William Washborne the ___________. (The date is unreadable.) The last year on the film in 1639, and is almost completely undecipherable. There was no page for 1638. So, as you can tell, a great many years are missing which probably contained many more Washburn entries. For instance, there was no page for 1623, which was probably when Philip Washburn, the younger son of John and Margery Washburn, was born, since he was not listed in the 1624 baptisms. Margery Washburn left England for New England on 13 Apr. 1635 on the "Elizabeth and Ann" with certificates from the Mayor of Evesham for: Marjorie Washborne age 49, and her two sons John Washborne age 14, and Phillipp Washborne age 11. (Sources: Stratton, "Plymouth Colony, Its History & People 1620-1691," and Barnard, "Some Notes on the Evesham Branch of the Washbourne Family," both of whose source was Hotten's "List of Emigrants," 1874 edition, p. 57.) If Philip were 11 in Apr. 1635, he was probably born after April in 1623. Also probably born in 1623 would have been William Washburn's eldest daughter, Agnes, who married Robert Jackson, of Hempstead, L.I., in about 1645. Supposedly Mary, daughter of William Washburn was baptised in Bengeworth in 1629. I did not find this entry, nor a page at all for 1629, unless the page I took as 1628, which was very difficult to read, was actually 1629, and her entry may have been on it. Also missing is the baptism of William's elder son, John Washburn, in about 1627 or 1628, as well as that of William's younger son, Hope Washburn, probably in the early 1630s. I found no marriage record for William Washburn, nor did I find any further record of Francis Nichols. The fact that John Washburn was a churchwarden in 1625 provides us with the last record I've found of his being in Bengeworth before emigrating to Plymouth Colony, New England, while his brother William was still in Bengeworth in 1637. The earliest record of John Washburn in Plymouth Colony was on 2 Jan. 1632/3 when he sued Edward Doty. I have found, so far, no clue as to the relationship between the Giles Washburn of Bengeworth and John or William Washburn, the immigrants to New England and New York. I will continue this search through the records of All Saints Parish, Evesham, Worcestershire, England. Since the two parishes both served the neighborhood, one on each side of the river, there is a chance that some Washburn events may have occured in All Saints rather than St. Peter's. The records of All Saints supposedly began in 1538. I will also be looking for Bushells in All Saints, since I found very few in St. Peters Parish, and since E.A.B. Barnard, the noted Worcestershire scholar, wrote that Jone Bushell, wife of John Washburne (the 2nd), was from a "family of good standing in Evesham." Since they were married in 1542, I won't find a baptism for Jone Bushell, but I'll certainly note any Bushell burials in hopes of later finding wills that might mention Washburn grandchildren in them. As usual, I welcome your feedback. John A. Maltby Redwood City, CA [email protected]
Dear List Members: I just joined the list and am doing research on the Washburn line. I have run into conflicting info, and was wondering if anyone out there might have a resolution for me. I am doing research on Joseph Washburn, son of John Washburn Jr. (b. 1621 in England, brother of Phillip) and his decendents. I was looking at the Washburn website the other night and noted that Jospeh Washburn was listed as being born 7 July 1653 in Bridgewater. But in scanning the files in my Family Tree Maker program, I noted at this Joseph was born in 1646. Further, I noted at the website that Joseph had a son, also named Joseph. At the website, no DOB is given. But a genealogy given me by a family member indicates this Joseph Washburn to be born in 1700 in Plymouth. This doesn't make sense to me......it seems that 1700 would be WAY to late for Joseph Sr. to be having Joseph Jr - in his 40's or 50's. I know that many of the Washburns in the US are related, but I am wondering if I have found the right people here or if there is a mistake in the info I have been given by my relative. I plan to verify all the info given me by this relative, because no sources were noted. But if someone here could give me a clue about this situation, I would be most grateful. Regards, Beda Warrick
Dear members, Just a reminder -- When replying to a message to the list, please quote only a few relevant lines to remind the readership what the thread is about. Quoting the entire message back is old news to most members. Thanks, David --- ... Adam and Eve probably found genealogy a bit boring. Greetings to you....a Washburn researcher..... 19 September 1997 The following is a brief introduction of 'another' transcribed document I am about to share with you. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ AN INTRODUCTION IN BEHALF OF CHARLES MARVIN WASHBURN: My grandfather, Charles Marvin Washburn, of Minneapolis, Minn., had built the linage of our family geneology from the early colonists back to England through to the present day (of which I am carrying on in his memory). He, being a detailed person as an educator/teacher and an attorney, had done his homework with the family research. After leaving the Minneapolis school system as principal of schools he passed the bar and became an attorney at 54 years of age. He then went to work for his cousins as an attorney for the Washburn- Crosby Flour Mill and railroad. Today the company is known as General Mills. The radio station in Minneapolis still exhists...WCCO Radio (Washburn-Crosby Company). The time I am describing here took place during the 1930's and 40's. He passed on in his early 80's. Through his study and much correspondence and travel, he had accumulated all the birth and marriage certificates for our complete family line. One goal he accomplished was the etablishment of our family linage with the Mayflower Society and the Son's of the American Revolution. All of his documentation was transcribed by type-written accounts and bound together with actual photographs and supporting records that are represented in a "labor of love" in a non-published book. Also, I have a multitude of other supportive documentation. Xerox copies were not existant in his day, so all copied document's became actual photographic reproductions, full size...etc. You have to realize this was quite a accomplishment for that period! From the pages of his delicate researched study I present to you the following----- THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENT AS TRANSCRIBED BY Charles Marvin Washburn..Circa: 1930-1940: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ WILL OF WILLIAM (4) WASHBURN OF BRIDGEWATER (Mass.)
