Hello fellow Washburn researchers: Can any of you fellow listmembers put me in touch with the gentleman who wrote the two Washburn related books mentioned by Ian earlier this week? How many generations do the works deal with? Thanks, Beda Warrick
I have heard several times about Brenton's neew book or republication of the old one. Where would a person find or purchase a copy of this? What is the price if for sale? Carl Washburn [email protected]

Everyone should make a habit of "signing" their e-mail messages with their full name and e-mail address. I receive messages frequently from people who don't bother to even put their name at the bottom, thinking that I can always figure out who they are from the information on the header, which can sometimes be confusing. Also, I file my printed e-mail messages by people's last names, not by their e-mail names, since I also get regular snail-mail from people. So, if I can't figure out who you are, I'm less inclined to answer your messages! Therefore, I would encourage everyone to put sign their e-mail messages with their first and last names and e-mail addresses so that people can be identified more easily. > >Anyway, thanks to the Chuck at "[email protected]" for taking the >time to straighten this out. And hello from the "other" Chuck Washburn! (I'm the guy who has attempted to maintain a Washburn Family History Page at "http://home.earthlink.net/~cwashburn/history.html.") I had noticed the postings to this Discussion List by the Chuck at "[email protected]," and I must admit that I was wondering if people were aware that there are two of us out here. Chuck has communicated with me on several occasions regarding the Rebecca Lapham issue, which I really appreciate. Also, I believe John Maltby a little while back shared with all of us newly discovered information that was discussed in the July 1996 issue of The American Genealogist, which information supports the position that the Rebecca who married John Washburn III was a Lapham. Once again, many thanks to John Maltby for expanding everyone's knowledge regarding the Washburn family ... I know John has been a big help to me. I believe Chuck actually sent me a digitized copy of a photograph of John Washburn III's tombstone attached to an E-mail message some time ago. Although I was able to open it using L-View Pro, the file was extremely large and I had trouble trying to get it into a size and form that I could put on the web page. (Chuck, if you want to try again, I'll do my best to convert it. If you can send it in .jpg or .gif, it may go more smoothly.) I think the best way for the two of us to identify ourselves on this Discussion List will be for each of us to put his E-mail address following his name. I don't plan on changing my E-mail address anytime soon. My E-mail address is also on my Washburn Family web page in case someone wants to confirm which Chuck is the author of a posting to this list. Anyway, thanks to the Chuck at "[email protected]" for taking the time to straighten this out. And, Chuck, I'll try to update your link on the John Washburn III page this week. Hello again, After a mid-course correction from John Maltby (thanks John) I have revised my original request. The information I am seeking is the name of Josiah's second wife ( ? ) mother of Nathan and the relationship of Hugh Washburn's son Zephaniah to Ma. and NY. Brenton Washburn's new book provides Zephaniah as Hugh's son, but I am confussed. Hugh according to information from John Maltby always lived in Ma. yet Zephaniah is listed as being born in NY? Can any of you cousins be of help? Thanks, John R. Washburn
Greetings All: Monday 3 November 1997 Because of recent communications that I have had with several members on this "Washburn" list....there is a "great" confusion as to the 'Chuck Washburn' you might be communicating with. Whether or not the "other" Chuck Washburn identifies to others, addressing his communications, stating there are "two" of us...This confusion will continue. I wish to put to rest this confusion. As I already have cleared the air with several folks already. I feel that there is a obligation to all of you out there to know who you are communicating with. Because we "both" belong to the Mayflower Society possibly extends to this confusion. I have shared with the "other" Chuck early on this year when he was in the process of building his wonderful web page on the "Washburn Family." I was excited and happy to assist him with the info of my branch...as I trully believe that in sharing, this is how we all learn. The "other" Chuck Washburn, whom was very gracious (and I thank him very much) to include my name on his web page (hasn't yet updated my new ISP address) presents only REBECCA (LAPHAM) WASHBURN's gravestone. There has been some controvercy on who Rebecca's husband was because her gravestone doesn't mention being the spouse of John Washburn, III. There is very little documentation on the spouse of John Washburn III. But, there is factual data available from a few sources. My Grandfather obtained a picture of John's gravestone...standing side by side with his spouse, Rebecca. I also have documentated proof of this marriage. On John Washburn III's gravestone states his wife was Rebecca (Lapham) Washburn. As I have stated earlier, I have been in communication with the "other" Chuck Washburn. He is also aware I have this photo. I have offered it to him to place it on his web page free of charge, but has not acknowledged to request it at the present time. My Washburn family decendents are "all" male Washburn decendents from the first John Washburn in Duxbury, Mass in the early 1600's to the present time. My Grandfather, Charles Marvin Washburn lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota during the early 1900's. He compiled his documentation during the 1930's and early 1940's. He was the one who had compiled all the early family documentation. I have all his records and I am currently the caretaker for my family branch of the Washburn's. His cousins owned and operated the Washburn-Crosby Flower Mill in Minneapolis and also operated the Washburn Railroad the provided the transportation of bringing in the wheat for the mills. Today, the flower mill is known as General Mills (Gold Medal Flower). My Grandfather worked for his cousins on the railroad as an attorney. He became a member of the bar when he was 54 years old. Prior to that he was principal of schools in Minneapolis. He fullfilled his career as a lawyer for twenty years and died in the early 1940's in his early 80's. I am sorry of the confusion to those of you who think I might be the "other" Chuck Washburn. Myself, being a historian and writer/publisher, recognizes the obligation of disclosure when we both "Chuck Washburn's" want to share our hearitage with others.... I will offer a suggestion for those who reads this communication through. The "other" Chuck began with the idea of addressing himself as "Chuck II" in our personal communications. He communicated with me as "Chuck I." So, for those who want to distinguish each of us, please respond with either "Chuck I" for myself and "Chuck II" for the other fellow. How does this sound to you....Chuck II? .....Looking forward to hearing from you.....Your Cousin, Chuck I P.S. I also have addressed previously that I personnally know Brenton Washburn, the author of the "Washburn Family in America." Below, I present you my family branch....as I have done previously on this list. I am a member of the Mayflower Society as well as the Son's of the American Revolution. This is the heritage my Grandfather established of which I am proud to carring on. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- WASHBURN FAMILY IN AMERICA: 1. Chuck, have you run across the name of my GGGF Willis who married Ann BENNETT, also born in NC, sometime in the late 1820s or early 30s? Their daughter, my GGM Ursulla Washburn STANLEY, was born 1833 in Indiana or Illinois. Any information would be appreciated, but I don't know if they are descended from your line. Thanks very much. This is NOT the family that founded the University or close relatives. They were grandsons of Nathan Washburn, a drummer in the American Revolution. Avery Washburn and his brother James Monroe Washburn, both born in Stafford, CT moved to Topeka after the Civil War. Avery had married Castorn Gordon, lived in NY and then moved to Topeka. Monroe married Cornelia Sweet, also from NY, moved to Baton Rouge and left there during the war, moved to Stafford and then on to Topeka. I have quite a few letters from Monroe and some from Avery that they sent to there brother John Randolph Washburn in Stafford. They sent lots of photos from Topeka of their families and I have put them on a page of my website. Some are just numbered with the hope that someone can identify them. I would like to share them with their descendants. Sue http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Hangar/3374/TopekaWashburns.htm
GREETINGS ALL: Friday 31 October 1997 As a decendant of John Washburn III, I wish to put to rest the issue of John(3) Washburn'a spouse who WAS Rebeckah LAPHAM. They both were married on April 16, 1679 in Bridgewater. Mass. I have photographic documentated proof and written documentated of proof of this marriage and death. This will help many family geneologists out there doing research. This issue continues to surface with people who are learning what research is all about. There is enough material published proving this data is factual with no reason to recreate the wheel. I have photographic proof of the fact that JOHN(3) WASHBURN was married to REBECCA LAPHAM. My Grandfather, Charles Marvin Washburn, had taken several photographs of the tombstomes of JOHN(3) WASHBURN and REBECCA (LAPHAM) WASHBURN during the 1930's. On John's tombstone it states he was married to Rebecca LAPHAM. I also have written documentation he aquired in 1927 from the Town Clerk of Bridgewater of the authenticity of their marriage. My photograph of John Washburn's gravestone stands to the "left" of his wife's (Rebecca). Also, there was a Dr. William Lapham, M.D. who kept a record of the Lapham's vital data. It was called "The Lapham Family Register." My question is....does anyone know of this family document?? I find it very sad that John III's gravestone had to be taken. My Grandfather had written to the Town Clerk of Bridgewater, Mass. in 1927 requesting information of the marriage of John and Rebecca. I have the letter response from the Town Clerk. With a actual photograph and the written record shows proof without any doubt who John Washburn III's spouse really was... He had accumulated our family record in the early 1920's through the 40's. He became an attorney for the SOO Line Railroad in Minneapolis, Minn when he was 54 years. Before that was a school teacher and served as principal in Minneapolis schools. He loved history and was very detailed in his recording of it. He lived to 84 years and was a person of great detail. =========================================================================================== From Charles Marvin Washburn's (my Grandfather) researched record as was recorded by the Mayflower Society I present you the following from his official Mayflower Society application record (as was approved) from the "General Society Copy": THE WASHBURN FAMILY IN AMERICA: 1. John Washburn II: Born at Bengeworth, England, son of John (England #8 ABOVE), married Elizabeth Mitchell, Dec. 6, 1645. She was the grand-daughter of Francis Cooke (of the Mayflower) and Jane Cooke. 2. John Washburn III: Born at Duxbury, Mass about 1646 and died at Bridgewater, Mass about 1719; married on April 16, 1679 to Rebeckah Lapham who was born on 1646 and died at Bridgewater, Mass on 1717. 3. Their son was William Washburn, born at Bridgewater, Mass on Feb. 16, 1686; died at Bridgewater, Mass on Mar. 16, 1756, married at Bridgewater on Jan. 13, 1715 to Experience Mann. 4. Their son was William Washburn, born at Bridgewater, Mass. on April 14, 1718, married on May 12, 1738 to Rebecca Curtis. 5. Their son was Philip Washburn, born at Bridgewater, Mass. on Sept. 30, 1743, died at Reading Township, N.Y. on April 23, 1829, married at Hardwick Mass. on Jan. 8, 1767 to Sarah Carpenter, born at Hardwick, Mass. on Aug 1747, died at Reading Township (near Watkins) N.Y. on 1826. ============================================================================================ MORE FACTUAL DATA.....there has been much written on this family issue: "Barbara Lambert Merrick, a previous historian for the Mayflower Society, has written an article published in the July 1996 issue of The American Genealogist regarding Rebecca, the wife of John Washburn (3rd), of Bridgewater. She discusses the previous article on the subject by Mrs. John E. Barclay, "Rebecca Lapham, wife of Samuel White or JohnWashburn?" and she provides ample and convincing evidence that Rebecca Lapham did, indeed, marry John Washburn, not Samuel White. The clincher is a deed where, on 1 July 1697, John Washburn, of Bridgewater, sold to Thomas Snell, a tract of land in the North Division of Bridgewater, ...... "falling by lot to my Brother in Law, Joseph Lapham, deceased and so from said Joseph Lapham to his Brother Thomas, is now mine." (Plymouth Co. Deeds 17:114-115.) Now, all descendants of the children of John and Rebecca (Lapham)Washburn, namely Josiah and Mercy (Tilson) Washburn; John and Margaret (Packard) Washburn; William and Experience (Mann) Washburn; and Josiah and Abigail (Washburn) Leonard, now have positive identification of their Lapham ancestry! ==================================================================== With reference to Brenton Washburn's book "The Washburn Family in America": Brenton is a wonderful and dedicated man. I personnally know him. I had met and discussed his first book with him soon after that publication. He had accumulated a lot of research by visiting many cemetery's throughout the eastern states. He had hoped to properly link up miscellanous branches in the future (with his new recent edition) on those generations that were in question. Regards, Chuck Washburn Member of: Mayflower Society and The Sons of the American Revolution
Perhaps most of you interested in the Washburn Family in America are aware of the two editions of the book by that title, by Brenton Wahburn in California. He has some new editions left, I think. The first edition is very helpful and is available at many hisotrical and geneological libraries. By the way, I'm sojourning in Bridgewater, Mass., home to the first four generations of the line stemming from John Washburn who arrived Plymouth 1632. If you there's something I can help with while in this locale, please let me know and I'll try to do it. If you know where any of the first four generations are buried, the locations of existing headstones or church records, etc., please contact me at your earliest convenience so I can scout them out and relay info back to you all. I am trying to locate the parents of a Nehemiah Washburn who was born in Connecticut around 1755-1765. He later moved to Massachusetts, and then finally settled in St. Lawrence County New York. Some reports list his wife as Betsey Edwards and others show Mary Ann Miftyn. Nehemiah had at least the following children: Rufus (b. 1791 in ??, d. Oct 15, 1828 in St. Lawrence Co. NY), wife: Orilla Stevens Nehemiah Jr (b. 1795 in MA, d. 9/7/1886 in St. Lawrence Co, NY), wife: Harriet Martin Abel (b. 1797 in MA, d. ????), wife: Nancy Ira (b. 1804 in MA, d. 1887 in NY), wife Milense/Melany Curtis? Nehemiah is believed to be the brother of a Captain Rufus Washburn who was also born in CT, moved to Otsego NY, and drowned in the Oswegatchie River in St. Lawrence County NY on 4/17/1817. Rufus was married to his cousin twice removed, Patience Washburn, daughter of Miles and Sarah Lyons Washburn. Rufus had 8 children (Sally or Sarah, Amasa, Nehemiah, William, Sabrina, John, Hannah, and Lucinda). Are any of these people familiar to anyone? Any information would be appreciated, and I have much further information on Nehemiah and Rufus and their decendents that I am willing to send. Thanks, Anne Cady [email protected]

I am sending you some Washburn information from the Bay of Quinte area of Ontario. I am currently off-line as far as the Washburn-List. I am descended from Capt. Robert Perry U.E. (1750-1837) and Jemima Gary Washburn (1754-1830 d/o Simeon Washburn & Jemima Gary). Capt. Robert Perry was a leading citizen in Ernestown Twp., Addington Co., Ontario. His effords were instrumental in establishing Methodism in Upper Canada. Robert and Jemima had ten children: 1.Rev. Robert Perry (1772-1856) + Ann Rogers d.1791 + Esther Aylesworth d.1803 + Sally Sine d.1868 2. Amy Perry (1775-1806) + James Williams 3. Patience Perry (1777-1844) + Daniel Pomeroy (1769-1808) 4. His partner was Marshall Springs Bidwell, son of Barnabas Bidwell, a prominent Mass. citizen who was a spokesman for Pres. Thomas Jefferson before he fled to Canada under scandal. ===================================================== In 1993 Larry Turner wrote that: In 1818 Marshall Springs Bidwell clerked for a Kingston, Ontario lawyer named Daniel Washburn.
