    1. Digest? ( was Re: Seth Washburn )
    2. In a message dated 98-02-04 18:42:11 EST, [email protected] writes: > I just received my 2 vol. set of Brenton's books. I am new to this mail list - I've already received a few VERY helpful "forwarded" posts ( thanks "mw" - you know who you are! ) - but I'm also wondering if there is a digest available of old mail. I have a few questions I'm sure you "regulars" are probably very tired of hearing! I'd love info on books - my library only has a fifth edition of Weis's Ancestral Roots - and that's it! What are Brenton's books? ALL my other research is from online geneaology sites and some notes a relative sent me made from Ada Haight's book ( and I can hardly read their handwriting! ) My name is Susan Sawhill Apito. My "Washburn" is Helen Emily Washburn, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Ann Secor. I haven't been able to verify them yet ( I started this whole project as a "home school" project for my 11 year old.......got obsessed......now it's MY project! ) I feel pretty proud of how far I've gotten in only about three weeks though! ( My family thinks I'm nuts for being so excited we're related to William the Conqueor - they ask me when my Tiara is coming in the mail!! ) Sue

    1. Seth Washburn 1755-1799 VT m. Elizabeth Dunbar
    2. Hi all, I just received my 2 vol. set of Brenton's books. WOW, they are a real labour of love. But, the good news is that my Luman D. is in the books, but unconnected. So I am making vague assumptions, for research paths only. I am hoping that anyone researching the line of Seth Washburn 1755-1799 VT m. Elizabeth Dunbar, with children Seth, James, Lucy, Eliz., etc would contact me. Specificly I am looking for a some information on James. I have long thought that Luman's name was Luman Dunbar Washburn, so in additon to Elizabeth Dunbar's connection, the migration path of Jame's brother Seth Descendants, is pretty close to the same migration path as my Luman's and his familys. Also, Seth had a son named Luman P., sooooooo I know these are all vague clues and I need to find facts to support this assumption. But, frankly I have been at a dead end for so long on Luman that I am grasping at any ideas. Ok the rest of the reasons I am going down this path are that James married a Susanna, and my Luman was married in 1830 in Putnam Co., NY. In the 1830 census there is a Susannah listed for Patterson twsp., I also know that Luman's mother was listed as Anna in Brenton's book, and by 1860 she had remarried and is listed as Anna Dickinger(per my research). So if anyone has any information on Seth(1) James(2) or Paterson twsp, Putnam Co., NY I would really, really appreciate an email. Thanks so much, Anita

    3. Sue, This is the information I have on William WASHBURN of Stratford, CT and Hempstead, LI. Most of the information is from a book by Mabel Thacker Rosemary Washburn, "Washburn Family Foundations" published in 1953, and some correspondance with Jud Hoffman on Compuserve. I think that there may also be more information in the Richard WASHBURN book, but I can't remember. Your William Washburn was the youngest son of John Washburn and Martha (Timbrell) (Stevens) Washburn of Bengeworth. There are references to original documents in this book. Jeanne 1. William Washburne shows up in Stratford, Connecticut before 1647, where he was one of the 35 men who accepted the invitation of the first seventeen settlers of that old town to join them. Later accompanied by his son, John, he removed from Stratford to Hempstead, Long Island. This is proven by his name appearing as a freeholder of Hempstead in 1647. It had been previously settled by a colony of English from Wethersfield and Stamford, Connecticut.<6> He was freeman in 1645 at Hempstead, Long Island, New York.<7>,<8> Children of William1 Washburn and Jane Whitehead were as follows: 2 i.Sarah2 Washburn; born 1626 at Bengeworth, Worcestershire, England;<9>,<10> married Robert Williams; died 1695.<11> 3 ii.John Washburn, born circa 1627 at Bengeworth, Worcestershire, England; married Mary Butler. 4 iii.Mary Washburn; born 1629;<12> married Richard Willets;<13> died 1713.<14> 5 iv.Hope Washburn, born circa 1636; married Mary Stiles. 6 v.Martha Washburn; born 1637;<15>,<16> married Edmund Titus circa 1657.<17> 7 vi.Agnes Washburn; married Robert Jackson. 8 vii.Phebe Washburn, married John Ashman. 9 viii.Patience Washburn. 10 ix.Hester Washburn. 3. 3. This is my first query on this list and I have enjoyed the wealth of info shared. I still have questions on my Washburne ancestors that I have been trying to answer. I've taken loans from the NEHGL and just bought the two volumes of Washburn books and the answers still elude me. I'm hoping someone on this list can help me: Problem #1: I have a the following on my Sarah: ____ Jeremiah WILLIAMS __ Richard WILLIAMS l of New York l l b.p. Near Boston l l m. 1708 l _William WASHBURNE l m.p. Westbury, L.I. l___Sarah WASHBURNE l b. 1601 Bengeworth l bap. 26Mar1626 Bengeworth l d. 30 Oct 1657 Hempstead l d. 1693/95 Jericho, L.I. l__ Joan Nichols Hannah WILLIAMS--l l___ Philadelphia MASTERS b. 1684 My problem with these relationships is that there is a generation missing between Sarah and Jeremiah. Sarah would have been in her late 50's or early 60's when Jeremiah was born. It just doesn't fit. Problem #2: I have: "Bristol" Richard WILLETS m. 1650 ____ William WASHBURNE Mary Washburne----------- l b. 1629 l____ ???? d. 17, 12, 1713 Edmund TITUS m. ___ William WASHBURNE Martha WASHBURNE -------l l____Joan NICHOLS Robert JACKSON b. 1620 Scrooby, Eng. ___William WASHBURNE m. l Agnus WASHBURNE l___ Joan NICHOLS The way these charts look, Agnus, Martha, Sarah, and possibly Mary were all daughters of William and Joan. Yet, it has been difficult to document these relationships throughout all of my sources. Something seems wrong. Can anyone provide some insight that will help me clarify these relationships and correct any problems. Your patience and assistance is greatly appreciated. Sue TITUS-MICKLEY

    1. ABOUT BRENTON's NEW WASHBURN FAMILY BOOK...
    2. Chuck Washburn
    3. GREETINGS TO NEW "WASHBURN-L" Subscribers: Saturday 31 January 1998 I am a personal friend of Brenton Washburne of many years. Since his first publishing in 1983 he has just published a NEW edition of "The Washburn Family in America." And....Yes, he still has copies available. His new book is comes in 2 volumes, with each volume at least 2 to 3 inches thick. He had only 200 copies printed...He is down to about 100 copies left. He is asking $150.00 for the two volume set. His address is: Brenton Washbourne, 5412 Fox Hills Avenue, Buena Park, CA, 90621. This two volume set deals with ALL the Washburn generations in America. It includes William Washburn with his brother John and their decendents. I am sure you will find your family reference within this publication! Brenton is a very detailed and dedicated man...and I RESPECT his work and the exhaustive research he has accomplished in putting together this great task! By the way, THIS IS NOT a sandwitched list of names and phone numbers and this is also NOT a SPAMMED e-mail advertisement...to be sure!!.. There are many family members joining this list from time to time...and before Brenton runs out of books...I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to look into this wonderful work. This is a geneological reference source that you will continue to refer with. All the branches show their family link. It is a true labor of love he has done for our "entire" family! He has told me that the "third" Washburn grouping (that was in his first issue) were not linked to any particular branch identified... has now been completely revised and relocated to their approprate family branches that were not idenfified before....as well many NEW family links that have been added! Being his first book was published in 1983, it has been this long for this NEW revision. When contacting Brenton....I would appreciate it if you would please refer my name to him when you ask him about his book. This way he can keep track of his book inquires... FOR THE RECORD: I have NOT asked him for anything in return for helping him.....I am a Washburn, and all I want to achieve is to assist those who want to know their family history. Send him a note with any inquiry.......He will answer you..... REMEMBER...Please refer my name to Brenton when contacting him......I appreciate it much! ......Sincerely, Your Cousin, Chuck ....<[email protected]>

    1. Re: Sarah WASHBURN
    2. Sheila - The information I have on Sarah Washburn is that she was born in 1794, the oldest of 8 children (siblings are: Amasa, Nehemiah, William, Sabrina, John, Hannah, and Lucinda). I'm not sure as to the parents of her father Rufus. Brenton Washburne shows Rufus to be the 12th child of Solomon and Martha Washburn, but I have concerns about that connection and Brenton has his doubts as well according to correspondance I have had with him. Patience was the daughter of Miles and Sarah Lyons Washburn. She is buried in Pierces Corner's cemetery in St. Lawrence County New York. I have visited there and have a photo of her tombstone, as well as of the other Washburn's buried there. The papers I have from the Macomb NY county historian give no more info on Sarah than the date of birth and the name of her husband (Curtis Bristol), however they sometimes list her as Sally. Nehemiah Washburn(b. 1763) , who was also in St. Lawrence at the same time is believed to be a brother of Rufus. He is my great*4 grandfather. Anne Cady
