    3. Hi Again Mike, looks Like I might have a break through with William Fairlie Fergusson in the 1871 census I was hoping he was with Jane but he appears at Cookham Berkshire, Bray, at The Willows Windsor Road as William Fashie Fergusson brn East Indies Calcutta aged 33 ( in bracketts Half pay India Service ) which fits and he is a brewer pupil. He is with a cousin Alexander Topp 24 banker's clerk born Scotland. Its beginning to look like the children weren't his or at Effie Margaret wasn't his. Now to find Jane Trenfield born 1836 Fladbury Wor with Effie Margaret c 1869 Roll of Drums!!!! There is a Effie Margaret Taylor visitor 1 and Jane Taylor mar housekeeper 34 born Wor Fladbury So now to find out if Jane was really married. Looks like William Fairlie Jnr might be under Taylor I used Findmypast which seems to come up trumps when all else fails Cheers Marilyn Hi Mike, Bleak sounds good with 30 degrees at 8.00pm I only know their approx ages from the Tasmanian records. Effie Margaret Fergusson died 1952 in her 83 year. Kids may have got it wrong of course In the Mercury Newspaper it describes William Fairlie Fergusson in 1952 as being 80 years. I think he died around 1964 but the newspapers only go to 1952 This is what I have on William Fairlie Fergusson senior who married Jane Trenfield. On Tuesday there passed away from among us, in the person of' Capt. Fergusson. one whom only an unkind fate precluded from fulfilling the promise of his early and gallant career. Born at Fort William, Calcutta, in 1837,he received his education at the great public school whose "playing fields are proverbially associated with battles won, his maternal uncle, the Rev. John Moultrie, having been at the time Rector of Rugby. In January, 1857, he obtained a commission as cornet in the honourable East India Company's service, getting his lieutenancy and captaincy in the Bengal Cavalry in the years 1858 and 1859 respectively. Thus, although his military career was all too soon cut short, he was a survivor of those fateful years known to history as the period of the mutiny of the Bengal Army, and so he was one of the few names left on the roll of the mutiny veterans in this Commonwealth. From his service record it appears that he served in General Havelock's Volunteer Cavalry from July, 1857, till that officer's death. He served also with a detached squadron of the 5th Punjaub Cavalry at the siege and capture of Lucknow (Lucknow medal and two clasps); commanded the squadron at the battle and capture ' of Bareilly, for which he received the thanks of the Commander-in-Chief in orders of 8th May, 1858. While on furlough in England a few years subsequently, and on the eve of return to duty in India, he was, while actually on a journey to say good-bye to an uncle of his own name, so seriously injured in a railway accident that, two years later, he was obliged to be retired on half-pay. The uncle abovenamed was the learned and accomplished historian of ancient architecture, James Fergusson, F.R.S., D.C.L. (Oxon.). whose "Rock-cut Temples of India" made his fame in 1843, being followed bv "The Handbook of Architecture" (1855), which is still a text-book. Though an Anglo-Indian by birth and career, whose father made a distinguished name for himself in Calcutta, having also had a brother on the Bench there, and a cousin. Sir James Fergusson Governor of the Presidency of Bombay, yet Captain Fergusson came from a well known Ayrshire family and the bonnie Scotland of his boyhood's days had ever a warm place in his memory. Captain Fergusson made Tasmania his home in 1881, and in 1890 and 1891 was a captain in the auxiliary forces, commanding the Portland Rifle Company. Upright, generous to a fault, ever showing a brave and cheerful front, though latterly a very great sufferer, he has fought a good fight. No mention of his wife or children drat! This is his son William Fairlie Fergusson "The Mercury" Hobart 25 Feb 1952 Won Race For Veterans Eighty-year-old W. F. Fergusson, who sailed Fanita to victory in the race for veteran yachtsmen at Bellerive yesterday. The event was sailed in boats of the Bellerive Yacht Club's Fergusson class, which was named after the winning skipper. There is also a grandson called William Fairlie Fergusson who received a medal during WW2 He was in the UK Navy Lists under Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserves So far that is all I know as I couldn't find them either births. I wonder if they were in India? By 1878 their son James Andrew Fergusson was born in Queensland and died there same year Many thanks for looking Cheers Marilyn At 07:41 PM 12/01/2013, you wrote: >Hi Marilyn > >Do you have the birth details for both of the children mentioned as I >can't find their births under either surname on FreeBMD > >Mike i a bleak Droitwich > > >On 12/01/2013 07:25, Watson Family wrote: > > Hi, > > I realise Fladbury is in Worcester but wondered if SKS can find her in > > the 1871 census.
