    3. Thanks for that, Jacqui. I've now found and read the earlier press releases which gives more information. http://www.ffhs.org.uk/news/news070207.php http://www.ffhs.org.uk/news/news070116.php http://www.ffhs.org.uk/news/news060711.php http://www.ffhs.org.uk/news/news060612.php http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pdfdir/frc0107.pdf Never having visited the FRC (pre-school children makes it a bit difficult!), I couldn't work out from the press releases what will be left at FRC if ONS take the BMD indexes/books to Kew. Can anyone enlighten me? 3. There is a pdf on FRC website http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/frc/pdfs/fh_sources.pdf They have census, GRO Overseas, some death duty and probate material and divorce indexes on film/fiche. Much of this is accessible in other centres. To me, it was access to the Big Books that was useful on my few visits there!! And with the DOVE project seemingly not flying as projected <g> the entire thing seems to be heading into a similar state to that we had with 1901 census release! Although I am a computer user I am acutely aware there are a good many family history researchers who are not, and I personally believe they are being done a huge disservice by manual records (paper, fiche or film) being withdrawn. There are also plans, I believe, for Colindale to be closed...again with "promises" that material will be available in other formats. It is ironic that centres so popular with researchers are being closed down when the number of people researching their past is increasing; and more being encouraged to set out on their voyages of discovery by such programmes as the BBC's "Who do you think you are?" which starts a new series tonight in UK. The GRO indices and the censuses will be available via terminals at Kew. Woe for those who aren't confident on the machines. I managed to visit the FRC with one pre-school child (in a baby carrier) and one disabled (in a child buggy), but it isn't easy. They've been there a couple more times since. I want to make one more visit before the end of October with my camera so that the children both have a photographic aide memoire of the place. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, SOM
