Hi everyone, Just want a bit of advice about obtaining a marriage certificate. I see that I have a few options. 1. Directly from the GRO. 2. FRom the Warwick records office 3. FRom the various researchers that offer a certificate service. >From what I have been able to find by searching on the internet, obtaining a certificate from the GRO or from the Warwick records office is much cheaper. I am wondering if there are any possible problems obtaining them from these places. I live in Australia. Has anyone had any experience it how long it would take to get to me from the GRO or Warwick records office. Hi Matt, Your 2nd choice is actually Warwick REGISTRAR's Office - the Records Office doesn't hold the information - but allowing for that, those are indeed your options. But I'd ignore any sort of "Certificate Service" - for *they* will use options 1 or 2; add a good 50% - and take longer. You real problem is Paying. Unless you have a bank account (in sterling) AND it's held at a 'London-Clearing' Bank - or (for an additional fee) you can purchase such a cheque from your own bank - don't attempt Warwick Registrar's Office. (Their bank's charges for processing any other sort of cheque are roughly 3 times the face value of a cheque for a single certificate...) Far and away your best bet is to order online from the GRO using your credit card. (This is usually the best way to get a Marriage Certificate in any event, for many local Registrars won't issue one at all UNLESS you can tell them the exact date and place of the marriage - which is usually the reason you want the cert in the first place!) Hi Gus and All, It has been a while since I purchased a certificate, but when I did, I went to the Birmingham Register Office, and they accepted a postal money order in Pounds Sterling. Is this not an acceptable form of payment at any record office? I am about ready to buy more certificates so I really need to know this. I find my credit card is not accepted (nothing to do with available credit) by any of the genealogy sites I have tried to use it for so far. So I thought the postal money order would be the best option. Am I correct in this? Warwickshire Record Office will be able to provide you with a copy of the entry from the parish registers for which they will make a charge. I think what you mean is Warwick Register Office which is not the same thing. You are wise not to use a certificate service. Although some are reputable and honest, some are not. I do know of one lady who believed the going price for certificates was 60 GBP because that was what she'd been charged. > I am wondering if there are any possible problems obtaining them from > these places. I've not heard of anyone having any problems getting certificates from register offices but I do know of one that has decided to charge more than the 7 GBP that a certificate does cost (not Warwick!). I use the GRO regularly for certificates and have never had any problems with them at all. > I live in Australia. I can't comment on the register office since I don't use them but the GRO takes 7-10 days I believe. -- Charani (UK)
Hi Matt, Can't comment directly about Warwick records office but do remember that GRO copies are just that - they are copies of the originals sent to London at the end of each quarter (at least - up to the time when the current, troubled, electronic system was rolled out) and can, therefore, suffer transcription errors. In my own family we had a GRO Marriage certificate that recorded the bride's father as 'deceased' but also appeared as a witness! Contact with (Birmingham) Records Office confirmed that the word 'Deceased' had crept in when the copy was made for GRO. So, in general, ordering from the local office removed one possible source of error on certificates. A Fair Comment - BUT.... The "original" at the Local Registrar's Office - from which the copy was made to send to National Office - was itself a transcript... [Unless, of course, the marriage took place *in* the Registrrar's Office, or in a place 'licenced to perform Marriages', but nevertheless not permitted to hold Registers.] Once you've got the certificate, and so *know* just where the marriage took place, then's the time to look at the Original.... Hi Matt I`m from Australia too. If I remember correctly when you order your certificates from the GRO they give you an estimated despatch date. They used to take about a fortnight to arrive in the mail. G'day I was interested to see the comments on Certificate Agents I guess some are out to fleece the unwary. However , there are some honest ones out there. I have used the same person to obtain Certs for the last 7 years and have recommended him to many, many researchers. He has never let me down- He is reliable and honest - prompt and efficient- his turnaround time is about 1 week depending on the time it takes him to obtain the cert. I have ordered my certs by email- posted off a cheque the following week and had the info sent back by email before the payment was received! He charges under $30 Australian per cerificate if ordered with info that enables him to find the correct one for you or charges a little extra to do a 5 year search- He accepts credit cards or bank cheques in Aussie dollars or Canadian etc and calculates his exchange rates depending on the currency value at the time. So I don't have to fork out a huge sum for a Sterling cheque note Australian Post Offices no longer issue Postal Orders so that avenue of payment is closed to us I have recently ordered a Will through him and it took a few weeks longer but was cheaper than going directly through the Archives and paying over $25 to get a bank cheque . If anyone overseas is interested I am happy to send his URL - Wendy Boland Warwick List Admin. Hi everyone, Just want a bit of advice about obtaining a marriage certificate.
