Hi, i have an ancestor who died in coventry 7 december 1858 aged 58. His name was THOMAS JERVIS BYWATER and he was a horse dealer. I have his death certificate and he seems to be unmarried. He was bapt in Leicester 1803 and born 31 december 1799. His parents were both from leicestershire Thomas bywater and jane jarvis. I can find no record of this family after Thomas baptism in 1803 until Thomas death 1858. Thomas was buried in Coventry cemetery and i wonder if a headstone exists ? Also was he on the 1841 census would a probate or will exist ? Can any kind person please help or offer any advice as i live in Malta.THANKS for your kindness and help. Keith in Malta.
Hi Keith, Horse dealers were notoriously mobile... You *might* find him in the 1841 and 1851 (he's not in the LDS 3-Counties Index) but the odds are that if you *do* find him, he'll be likely a Lodger or Boarder somewhere. *IF* he left a Will - still a fairly rare occurrence [as a %age of all deaths] in 1858 - it would be included in the National Probate Index. I don't know if that's now available on-line, but whether or no, you would need to look for him *twice* in each Index, as Wills and Administrations were then indexed separately. I have a strong feeling, too, that if he didn't leave a Will - and was unmarried - then it's unlikely that anyone would bother to pay for a headstone for him :-( Gus ----- Original Message ----- From: "keith hammond" <ficus@euroweb.net.mt> To: <WARWICK@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 18, 2007 7:37 AM Subject: [WAR] How to find a relation ? Hello again Keith On Ancestry there are 2 (two) entries on 1841 Census for Thos BYWATER. One born c1796 and the other c1801, both living in Leicestershire. I don't have a full Ancestry sub at the moment so perhaps someone else could help out? Hi Keith Re wills 1858 to date for the whole of England and Wales. To see if there was a will you need to check the calendar of wills which as far as I am aware are not available online (yet) they are available at Probate Offices and I am told certain major libraries, as that may not help you, I believe the LDS have them also? However the easiest way is to send to :- http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/ Select Forms and Guidance (top left menu) Under work type, select Probate This will show a list of forms, Pa1S is the application for a probate search. The second page has some instructions, cost, method of payment etc. If you send a letter to the address on the form, with cheque for five pounds giving the name, place of death, date of death as near as you know it, they will search and supply copies, request copies of grant and will. (the non returnable fee includes a four year search) I do not think they take payment except cheque or postal order (UK) or International Money order in Sterling (from outside UK) As far as I am aware there is no facility for ordering online or by e mail. There is a project inhand to put the Probate indexes online but that will be some time before its available.
