I have been searching for a marriage for some time with no luck then just today by chance I find what I am looking for, my question is when couples got married would they have to show documents such as birth certificates like we have to do today, as I have a great aunt that was born Spreadborough whose mother remarried to Edgeler. In the 1871 census my great aunt appears as Spreadborough and in 1881 she appears as Edgeler and in 1883 she marries as Edgeler. If they had to prove who they were what documentation would be needed.
