    3. Hello all It is interesting to see the comments about stiles. There are many forms of stile - a contrivance to enable humans to cross fence, hedge or wall but generally supposed to stop animals from following suit. There are a number of publications which include styles of stile. Some are aimed at those constructing new ones, some are pictorial of unusual or attractive stiles discovered along the rural pathways. "Tumble down" may not mean the stile is in a state of considerable disrepair. There is a form of wooden stile with cross-pieces pivoted so you push down on the top rail, it lowers to the next, and they both lower to the next. You step over, let go and they return to their horizontal position.
