Hello Carol, I see the mother was born in Paris but the census doesn't say whether or not she was a British citizen. From the fact that at least two of her children have French names (Emile, Adolphe) and that Richard & Robert can also be French if pronounced differently, it would suggest that she (or her family) were French. If you know her maiden name, it MAY be possible to find out who Robert may have been visiting in France. If she is French, Bessie may not have been her original first name. I say this because I discovered that a French-born woman who married one of my ancestors in Jersey was called Aimée-Céleste but her real name never appears in any British census, or even ondocuments - she is always Emily. Funnily enough, in the 1871 census, the Hicks' are listed immediately below some of my ancestors in Kenilworth - not that that helps youor search of course. Just a coincidence!
