Hi Trevor, At the time you're asking about - and things haven't changed much since - obits were rare in local papers unless the deceased was a well-known personality [a politician or an eccentric] or had died 'mysterioulsy' [or amusingly] and there'd been a coroner's inquest. Even in the latter cases there's usually little detail of the actual cause of the death. Otherwise there's only the announcement of the death [paid for by the family] - sometimes including a vague phrase such as "peacefully, after a long illness". Your only real option here is - I regret to say - to buy the death certificate.
