    3. Does one really need consent for adding a link to another website?   Surely, you are getting free advertising of your website.   Search Engines use 'Spiders' to build their search Engine Databases, and certainly don't ask your permission to add your website. If you have a website that is informational based, for the good of others, what's the problem?   Neil  ________________________________ From: Carole Eales <carole.eales@talktalk.net> To: warwick@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, 12 July 2012, 12:56 Subject: Re: [WAR] Warwickshire Ancestry website Hi Connie... Hallo The site gives links TO other sites.  The blue underlined links are hyperlinks.  They take you to the original site. It hasn't been lifted at all. If I had a site, I could put a /link/ to Pickard's site on it, with his consent of course.  Other people could click on the link on my site and be taken to Pickard's site or any other site I had a link to. If the Warwickshire Ancestry site is similar to any site, it's Cyndi's List which works exactly the same way. Connie in London It seems a bit pointless to me - one link to Pickard's web site would have sufficed. Rgds Michael

I note that the article refers to Catholic ancestry in Scotland. I assume that RC records in England have either already been dispersed or were never brought together. The RC records in Birmingham RC diocese which I know includes records for St Osburgs in Coventry, Sedgley and Walsall in Staffordshire, and I believe parishes stretching down into Worcestershire as well are housed at St Chads Roman Catholic Cathedral in Birmingham and can be viewed by appointment. Hallo You would have to ask Pickard himself whether he has given consent. Courtesy says you ask for consent before including a site. Sadly this doesn't always happen. I had a look to see who was behind the FreeAncestry site of which Warwickshire is a part but there appears to be no contact details which is not good news. It is most definitely NOT mine. I said IF I had a site. These are only links to site content. If a site is viewable on the internet, anyone can publish a link to it. If you use a search engine (Google, Ask, Bing, etc) it will produce results from thousands of sites and give links to those sites. Nothing has been lifted by the search engines. As I said, Warwickshire Ancestry is similar to Cyndi's List. If you don't want your site or parts of it to be private so no one can see them except designated people, ie your members, then take down the information and state on the page that it is a membership only section Connie in London

Hallo The simple thing is not to click on the ads but to ignore them. They are click throughs and they do not earn anything for the webmaster but they can earn money for the advertisers. Just go to the links listed in blue. Some of them are broken. At least one is new and not yet up and running. I see nothing strange about someone bringing a resource to the attention of a list. I have seen this resource on other lists but not posted by Tillie. Connie in London
