Good morning Mary Jane, > There are far too many to Thomas Phil(l)ips about in Warwickshire at this > time for anyone to respond to your question unless you provide further > information. I have to concur with the answer above, but in the meantime since the name is one I am researching here are mine: I am descended from Charles PHILLIPS (c.1778-1851) who was a butcher in Coventry. I know that he served an apprenticeship and after a number of attempts gained the freedom of the city in 1800. The apprenticeship data tells me that his father's name was Thomas who was also a butcher. The closest baptism I have found for Charles is 17th May 1781 at Coventry St Michael, which would suggest Charles was the son of Thomas and Mary (speculatively Mary JORDAN who were married at Coventry Holy Trinity on 12th June 1759). There were two other possible sons who appear in the apprenticeship register, John b.c.1771 apprentced as a butcher 1785, and William b.c.1770 apprenticed as a barber and peruke maker in 1784. There is also another William christened in 1762. I have also found a baptism 12 September 1737 for a Thomas Phillips at Cov Holy Trinity which suggests there could be another Thomas going back, possibly the husband of Ann BRYON (m Cov Holy Trinity 23rd June 1734) Regards Peter
Mary Jane, There are far too many to Thomas Phil(l)ips about in Warwickshire at this time for anyone to respond to your question unless you provide further information. Reagrds Peter Does someone have information on a THOMAS PHILLIPS in Warwickshire in the very late 1600's? Many thanks, Mary Jane PHILLIPS

I'm new to WarwickRoots and I'm hoping someone can help me and others who have a common link through the surname Hems in London. We run an on-line database for our Hems tree based in London (www.juxon.net) but we have a feeling that there may be a link to Birmingham with William Hems (from London) marrying Sarah Palmer on 28 Mar 1758 in Aston juxta Birmingham and subsequently having children baptised at St John, Deritend & Bordesley. We have William and Sarah (no surname) in London and some of the children's names/births/christenings tie in well together with the Birmingham family. Can anyone shed some light on the possible connection of these two families? And for anyone with Hems as a surname in their ancestry, we (the Hemsearchers as we call ourselves at www.juxon.net) would like you to join us and contribute to the database we've constructed with over 5000 people so far. At present the London and Midlands/NW families seem to have no connection - we'd like to, hopefully, find the missing link. John
Hello Pickard, I've collected a lot of Warwickshire wills and would be willing to contribute such summaries, but I don't dare promise when! Hello, I am new to the list and am seeking information on the early history of the first? Coventry gasworks. My 2 x great grandfather's first job in England after leaving Scotland was as a gas engineer in that city. When his first two children were born between 1850 and 1852 the family was residing on Gas Street. Soon afterwards he moved to London and was involved with Alexander Angus Croll, another Scot with interests in gas generation, and later the leassor of the Coventry Gasworks. My ancestor's name was David Methven 1817 - 1867. Thanks Nick
Hi Trevor, At the time you're asking about - and things haven't changed much since - obits were rare in local papers unless the deceased was a well-known personality [a politician or an eccentric] or had died 'mysterioulsy' [or amusingly] and there'd been a coroner's inquest. Even in the latter cases there's usually little detail of the actual cause of the death. Otherwise there's only the announcement of the death [paid for by the family] - sometimes including a vague phrase such as "peacefully, after a long illness". Your only real option here is - I regret to say - to buy the death certificate. Trevor, The easiest way to find out how Albert died is to send for a copy of his death certificate. Hi guys, I realise that this pertains to a location outside of Warwickshire but I thought I'd give it a try. Does anyone have any information or connection regarding Earl Shilton Silver Prize Band? (Earl Shilton in Leicestershire near Hinckley). My grandfather Claud PHILPOTT was a member of the band, sometime just after WW1 I suspect. The family legend is that he led the band to a Silver Medal position in a competition "down in London". Certainly his grandson has a presentation baton in his possession bearing the inscription "Presented to Mr C Phillpot by the Officers and Members of the E.S.S.P.B." The hallmark gives a date of 1911 but that may of course not be the date when it was presented. Any snippets of info, images (would be fantastic!) or ideas on other possible sources of information would be extremely welcome. Very best regards. Ian Phillpott

Interesting database with beautiful original documents. I found a couple of leads. I only wish the same thing was available fro the preceding time period. Maybe it’s coming!
