    3. Hi William Tracing your SMITH line back in the census I find Sarah a widow in 1911 She states she has had 10 children all living in 1911 From the 1881 to 1911 census I can see Ellen b1876 Florence b1878 Frederick Thomas b1880 Edith b1881 Charles b1885 Samuel b1888 * William b1890 * Albert b1892 * Frank b1895 * Herbert b1888 * * = still single in 1911 Do you have another child? You may have a task ahead of you in tracing the service of them in WW1 but it can be done All the boys could have served, I would suggest either subscribing to Ancestry or try your local library who may have it (most do) and then check through the various service records for each name in turn It can be a long task as not every detail is indexed, you might try the names and birth year +/- 1 year and keyword Birmingham or Warwickshire Also try any known addresses as sometimes they are indexed, try only part of the address if necessary as Street can be down as St etc I should also warn you that only approximately one third of service records survived WW2 for the average soldier so they may not survive If the man came home an invalid he may be in the pension papers or the silver war badge data Further avenues to try are the Probate Calendars (also on Ancestry) for any of your mens names in Warwickshire (they may have stayed in the County) and any deaths for men of your name born in the approximate year you have for them, with luck you may find one that may lead to others Not an easy task with SMITH as I know all to well as I descend from various SMITH lines Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 12/10/2012 09:33, William Leece wrote: > I'm digging into the family of my maternal grandmother (Florence) Maria > Smith (1878-1932), originally from Worcestershire and Gloucestershire but > living in Birmingham by the late 1800s. > Her parents were Philip Smith, bootmaker, and Sarah Ainge and I seem to > have got them fairly well nailed down thanks to census records. 3. I'm digging into the family of my maternal grandmother (Florence) Maria Smith (1878-1932), originally from Worcestershire and Gloucestershire but living in Birmingham by the late 1800s. Her parents were Philip Smith, bootmaker, and Sarah Ainge and I seem to have got them fairly well nailed down thanks to census records. She appears to have been the third of a family of 11 children and I'm wondering what happened to my 10 great-uncles and great aunts. It seems likely that some may have been around into the 1970s, but I never knew any of them. I gather one of the younger ones came back a broken man from the First World War, his health ruined by a gas attack, but that's about all I have. William Liverpool

    3. Hello to all very many thanks for all the suggestions and to David who found a few for me. Yes this is not an easy one at all, with many aunts and uncles ( huge families) and many smiths. it is going to be real detective work. But with surnames maybe I can match up some marriages. I have no further information, she doesnt give a name, and as the majority of the family stayed in Derbyshire, I was unaware of the Coventry family. Thanks once again for all the replies, much appreciated Aileen   Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. 3. Hi Aileen Many men were "missing presumed dead" and were later found either injured or as a prisoner of war Have you tried the CWGC ? The search engine now allows various search terms possible such as keyword Coventry and select WW2 which gets 1155 hits Of course it will only pick up those with Coventry mentioned somewhere but is perhaps a start Cousin can also be used quite loosely to refer to a closer relation or even a family friend You appear to have quite a task ahead of you without more clues Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 11/10/2012 10:59, ann wrote: > I am hoping someone can help with some detective work > > In a letter written by my mother in 1941/2 > She talks of a cousin who has been given as 'missing presumed dead' > > He was in Libya and he lived in Coventry > > As she is from a large family, many aunts and uncles I have been unable > to find this cousin. > > I wonder if anyone has any lists with war dead from Coventry, a name > would give me clues to follow. > > Grateful for any help > > Aileen

    3. Hello Carol, I see the mother was born in Paris but the census doesn't say whether or not she was a British citizen. From the fact that at least two of her children have French names (Emile, Adolphe) and that Richard & Robert can also be French if pronounced differently, it would suggest that she (or her family) were French. If you know her maiden name, it MAY be possible to find out who Robert may have been visiting in France. If she is French, Bessie may not have been her original first name. I say this because I discovered that a French-born woman who married one of my ancestors in Jersey was called Aimée-Céleste but her real name never appears in any British census, or even ondocuments - she is always Emily. Funnily enough, in the 1871 census, the Hicks' are listed immediately below some of my ancestors in Kenilworth - not that that helps youor search of course. Just a coincidence!
