    3. While "a" Thomas WHITCROFT, aged 35, died in Atherstone Registration District in 1932 Mar ΒΌ [6d 811] even if you bought the certificate it may not tell you what you're wanting to know. However, if the death was registered by the Coroner this would give a strong presumption of an Accidental Death. That at least will give you a date for a newspaper lookup, which might tell you appreciably more. *BUT* by no means all mining deaths were reported in the press - it was only if there'd been multiple fatalities would there've been any heavy reporting... 3. If WW2 is anything to go by, in order to make sufficient munitions in time of war, factories used for other purposes in peacetime would have been converted. The whole engineering firm where my father worked in London was shipped to the north of England, where they made munitions in a disused cotton mill. The mill was on the maps but, as someone else said, it is most unlikely Ordnance Survey would have issued up to date maps during the war labelling the munitions works for the benefit of the enemy. Maps become secret documents in wartime (and they remained so in many places during the Cold War - whole cities in the Soviet Union did not appear on any map). MAR in France.

    3. Hi Lynne & Gwyn, Yes, piont taken but i'm hoping there may be a researcher who has found the answer some other way. While serching the web I found a figure of 400, 000 Munitions workers, mostly female for WWI. There has to be references that have been released via the '50 year' rule. Thanks for your input, Regards Beryl
