Hi everyone, I previously wrote to the list about my brickwall of William Hammond who married an Ann (both from Warwick) but ended up in staffordshire. They had a daughter Leah in 1859, and the birth was recorded under the name Homan. I have been trying to find Ann's maiden name. I finally got the birth cert of their daughter Leah who was born in 1859 and died in 1861. Now I have a new delimma. Ann's maiden name is Dumbleton. I found her in 1851 and she was born in 1834 in berkswell. (this matches my gggrandmother's place and date of birth.) In 1851 she is a servant in the household of William HOMAN (born 1815 Berkswell) who has a daughter Leah born 1841. There is a marriage record in 1854 of Ann Dumbleton to William Homan in coventry. Now I know William Homan was previously married to a Lucy and they had Leah born 1841. In the 1841 census William Homan is living with Lucy but Leah is not born yet. By 1851 Lucy died and William is shown as a widow, and an agr. laborer. Ann Dumbleton is a servant in his household. (Just as a side note, my ggrandfather died in 1903 at the age of 78 making him born 1826. I found him in the 1841 census in birkenwell but he was born berkswell. So I know my gggrandfather is not William Homan born 1815. Aslo the ages and places of birth given for gggrandfather thoughout all the census are different so I cannot rely on the census to determine if the 1861 census is actually William Homan born 1815 or William Hammond born 1826). The IGI also shows a christening in Berkswell in 1814 of a William Homan. After 1851 I cannot find William Homan born 1815. There is a death recorded in 1852 of a William Homan in Aston. However, in 1861 there is a William Hammond born 1820 berkeswell with wife Ann (born 1834 Berkswell - Ann's age of 50 given by ancestry is wrong) now with a daughter Leah born 1859 (the one I have a birth cert. for). This William is a plate layer like my gg grandfather. How do I find out if Ann Dumbleton actually married William Hammond born 1826 and then named her daughter Leah after the Leah she was a staying with in 1851? Another question is if Ann Dumbleton is my gg grandmother, I cannot find her parents. In 1841 she is living with her sister Sarah and both are with a family named Garner. I checked out the marriage of the Garner's and the wife is not a Dumbleton. There is no record in the IGI for an Ann Dumbleton either. There is a birth for a Sarah Dumbleton in 1832 Coventry to a William and Sarah, but no other children listed. Any suggestions for unraveling this mystery would be greatful. Hi listers Would anyone know of a marriage between John Earps & Elizabeth Glover 14th May 1814 at Nuneaton, I wonder if there were any children to this union. Thank you for any information on this subject. Jan Australia
The I.G.I. entry for the marriage of John EARPS & Elizabeth GLOVER at St Nicolas in 1814 looks genuine enough. However I cannot find any children of this marriage baptised at St Nicolas. G"day Following on from the loss of material from the Archives- You may be surprised at what is available overseas relating to Warwickshire. for example http://www.law.harvard.edu/library/ Harvard Law School has quite a collection of Deeds and Grants -most are proably too early to help the majority of researchers but some are dated into the 17th century. Try a search on Coventry John-- ! examples of Grants c. 1260 Grant Pinley, Warwickshire Grant by Margaret Beleteste, widow of the late John Beleteste of Pynneley, to Richard her son of all her land in the vill of Pynneley or elsewhere, according to the boundary-markers placed there; he paying the rent due and accustomed to the lords of that fee, and to the grantor a rose at midsummer. In this little charter the customary rent of a rose at midsummer, usually stipulated in charters where subinfeudation to a near-relative is involved, has a rather sentimental odor about it. Seal of the grantor, bearing a cross of palm branches with the legend: S' MA'G'TE.FARHEN and 4. c. 1200 Grant Brinklow, Warwickshire Grant by Richard son of Ernisius to William Bacun and his heirs of that land which Herbert son of Jordan held and which Roger son of Herbert held, at a yearly rent of 12d. For this grant William has given one mark. A long witness list is headed by William de Brinkel' and includes the names of Gerard Vintner, John Mercer, William Blundo the smith, Haldane Careter, Gilbert and Hugh the butchers, and Richard de Aula (see No. 6). Compare the seal with that of Robert de Spereburne in No. 3: the device here is nearly identical. Legend: + SIGIL' RICARDI FILII ERNISII Good hunting Wendy Boland Warwick List Admin
Hello, Is there any sort of website that people can post unknown family pics? I have all sorts from my mothers family, and thought by chance, someone may know them? Does such a thing exist? Thank you, Debbie
Hi Folks There is nothing like a major clear out of either the archives or library stock, this has been done in the past many times here in Coventry, more so with the library and Local Studies collections, the whole collection of Coventry Council Minutes - Education Minutes - and accounts where cleared to make way for computers, we are talking about huge racks of documents which dated back to the early 1900's if not before. Where did they go, well they were not put on sale, they 'disappeared' it is my conclusion that the waste incinerator worked over time, and no one has ever in the past 7 years come forward to counter this. I have personally raised this issue at both public and council levels, recently as the new and very welcomed 'History centre' here in Coventry will soon be opened. BUT, the collections from both Local Studies - The Cathedral and the Archives, will be come together. This will show up a large number of duplicates of both films, books, and documents. But what will happen to them. When I asked about this, and explained I did not want to see them going the same way as the Council books i.e. to the tip and burnt, I was told " Oh no we now have to shred them" I hope the gentleman was joking ! It is not unknown for our 'keepers of documents' to have a clear out, they try to keep these very quiet as they cause a public out cry. So keep your eyes open, many of the items could well be ex archives / library, but could have been sold for pennies. John Russell 024 76306651 07753519820 www.covkid.org.uk www.virtualmuseum.co.uk

Hello With the Auctioneers catalogue I found something that I may be interrested in ,it is down as on Ebay .I can not find any referrence to it on Ebay where do I start looking for it . Jeff
Hello Mar I have seen marriage allegations, wills, apprenticeship indentures, setlement papers, house deeds etc etc listed in Auctions. At the moment there are 3 WW1 medals (Pip Squeak and Wilfred I guess) that were earned by a Birmingham chap and the photograph of a young lad in the Warwickshire Regt uniform listed on ebay. A treasure trove for a relative if only they could afford to buy them. The archivists claim to have no room to store and preserve everything that is offered to them and whole collections are going overseas sold to the highest bidder . Not sure what amyone can do to prevent this. Wendy Thanks for this link, Wendy. It would be interesting to know how so many of these documents end up on the market instead of in the County Archives and one can't help wondering how many are documents that 'disappeared' from the archives in the days, not so long ago, when readers were trusted to go in and out without any security or identification. MAR in France.
