George Dowse (one of my 2nd great grand uncles on dad's side) was born in Coventry in 1836 to Nathaniel Dowse and Martha Elson (3x great grandparents). Sometime in the late 1850s or early 1860s he must have joined the Army because the next hints I have of him are in the 1871 census in London, St. George Hanover Square, St. John Westminster, Millbank Prison where he's shown as military prisoner/ soldier and in the 1881 census at Grove Hall Lunatic Asylum, Fairfield Rd, Bow, London, Middlesex, England where he's shown as patient/ soldier. I have reason to think he died in 1900 at the age of 63, the death registered in Poplar. I've searched for him in the 1891 census, but no joy. If someone has better access to the 1891 census of Grove Hall than I have, could they find George for me and send me the details? Thanks Paul Stringer Washington DC ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Wendy Ancestry , about 2 mths ago , withdrew the Free Look Up for BMD, and the records are now available for subscribers only . Sometimes I have been able to use the access them through another site , but that incidence is becoming more rare. Free BMD is still Free on Ancestry and always will be . Hello everyone. I have a question I hope someone of you could help with. My Warner family emigrated from Packwood in 1870. They sailed from Liverpool to NY. Could anyone on the list tell me where and how they would have purchased tickets for their voyage? I assume there must have been a ticket agent near by, Birmingham perhaps? Thanks for your help in advance. Ellie --------------------------------- Check out the hottest 2008 models today at Yahoo! Autos.

The link does take you to the relevant page via the various steps *but* clicking on "View Image" takes you immediately to the Membership page, as does clicking on "Info" to get the page ranges. I don't have a subscription to Ancestry. Anyone with a subscription who is logged in will get the pages. Access hasn't been removed but the *free* access has been. I have subscriptions to both findmypast and familyrelatives so not being able to get to the Ancestry version doesn't matter. > N.B. the above link is to the United Kingdom version - does that make a > difference?? Dave Mayall from freebmd has said there are no plans to change that. Both sites point to the same server. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, SOM

Yes, the free access has been withdrawn. It was long suspected that they would do so and they have, very much on the QT as well. www.freebmd.org.uk does have images as well that are free. Is anyone interested in the Hammersley family in Bedworth? Specifically I am interested in the John Hammersley who married Priscilla in the early 1700s. Was he the son of John and Susanna christened in 1684, or the son of Jeremiah and Mary christened in 1683? Richard
Hello My last query on this mailing list was successful in that it brought me into contact with some very helpful people and certainly helped my search for my brother in law's ancestors. So I thought I would try again with a new query! I have been researching my own and my husband's family history for many years and am now trying to find out more about the various families. Hence this enquiry............looking for descendants now rather than ancestors ( I have those). My late husband's father was one of 12 children of which only 6 survived into adulthood. One of these was Frederick Burgess b Dec 1880 in Brighton. In the 1901 census he was working in a foundry as a core maker, still in Brighton. The next reference I have is as the informant on his father's death certificate in 1918 - this gives him living at 34 Queen Mary's Road, Coventry. I believe him to be one of the people in a photograph I have at the time of his mother's death in 1928. Family knowledge passed on tells us that he married a lady called Lou and they had a son Ian. After this I have no idea!!! Has anybody any knowledge of Fred and /or his descendants? I hope somebody, somewhere will recognise these names. Hopeful thanks in advance Wyn Burgess Hove, Sussex
Wish I could help, but my research is still in the late 1700s with a Joseph Hammersley marrying a Maria Waters. Will be looking for anyother replies to your query.

There's no difference between a probate copy and an office copy other than the office copy won't carry the actual signatures. Can't answer your second point though.
Hi, Can anyone please help me? I am looking for the grave of grandfather George Henry Pilson who died on 1 April 1955 at 5 Clapham Terrace, Leamington Spa. He was survived by his wife Florence (nee Rayner) who he bigamously married in 1918. In 1918 he left a wife and 9 children in Liverpool. I contacted the lady at the Bishops Tachrook Crematorium and she checked the registers for Leamington, Warwick and Milverton cemeteries and found nothing. What churches had graveyards attached and in use in 1955 in Leamington Spa. I believe he was C of E Regards Brenda in Australia Sick of deleting your inbox? I have checked the Coventry Archives Catalogue web site and found a reference to an "office copy" of my ancestor George Osmond's will, which was written in 1831 with codecil 1833. He died in 1837 and the will was probated that year.I have the probated copy from National Archives. Also, ref. to the will of his father, Thomas Osmond, written, died and probated 1818, office copy (watermarked 1845), I have the probated copy of this will. Can anyone please tell me, is there a difference between an office and a probated copy of a will and why would an 1818 office copy of a will be watermarked 1845? Any help will be greatly appreciated, Thank you, Lynne.
