Hi Mike, Yes there is an Eagle Street in Coventry. Due to your date in the early 1800s it probably was "near" Coventry at that time. The city expanded during the 19th century and absorbed communities and hamlets far past it! It joins the Foleshill Rd. and had a pub on the corner, which became a casualty of the Blitz.I can't remember whether it was rebuilt, though. Regards, Muriel.
Hi All, I've just put my name on the Warwickshire Look Up Exchange for lookups in the Bishop's Transcripts for Elmdon parish 1742-1846 if anyone's interested. Barb Stacey Solihull UK
A Bulkington name in my family tree William TAYLOR born in Bulkington about 1790 according to the 1851 census. He had moved to Enderby, Leicestershire by 1813, ( described as his residence in the parish register of Brinklow, Warks at his marriage to Sophia EVERTON otp). He was a carpenter. They had seven children, and at least 11 grandchildren in Enderby during the following decades. I have yet to explore the earlier Bulkington TAYLORs, though the IGI reference to a baptism there on 14 Feb 1790 to Benjamin and Elizabeth Taylor looks promising. Jill Harvey
Is there anyone who could see if there was a death of a Hilda Rose Elizabeth Wood around 1923 1928 please.I cant find her death, marriage or anything else to do with her after her birth in 1923 in Derby. Her parents were in Coventry in 1926 where they had another daughter.I can't find any trace of her and would be grateful if anyone can shed some light on this for me.Thanking you.Margaret.
My ancestors called NEALE were farmers in Fenny Compton from at least 1680. The family were there for over 150 years. In the parish registers and various documents relating to the sale of land and property, my 6 x great grandfather THOMAS NEALE (b.1660) was described as a yeoman. His son, WILLIAM NEALE (b.1688) was variously described as yeoman, gentleman or esquire. They appear to have farmed in a rather big way, and according to the terrier for Farnborough Church, they leased some land from the church at Farnborough. In the terrier, their farm is referred to as NEALE's farm, but I have yet to determine where exactly it was. I still need to inspect the tithe maps. There are several deeds held at Warwick Record Office, which relate to WILLIAM NEALE selling various yardland of land and messuages, in the Avon Dassett / Fenny Compton area, circa 1740 and I suspect that the family's original land holding were in Avon Dassett, a neighbouring village. In 1733, WILLIAM NEALE bought some property from THOMAS PHILIPS ROUS of Rouslench in the County of Worcester, Esquire for £5,950, and I suspect that the sales of the various plots of land in the Fenny Compton / Avon Dassett area were to raise the money for this purchase. WILLIAM NEALE had three sons. THOMAS NEALE, who probably inherited the estate, WILLIAM NEALE who studied theology at Magdelen College and St Edmunds College, Oxford who became curate at Wormleighton in 1745 and later a vicar in the Worcester Diocese, and RICHARD NEALE my 4 x great grandfather who married ANN ELLIMAN and moved to Farnborough. I am still trying to find the Last Will and Testament of my 5x great grandfather WILLIAM NEALE, so if anyone comes across it, please let me know. There is a Will for William NEALE at Warwick RO, but it does not appear to be the one belonging to my ancestor According to the parish registers and other documents that I have come across, the RALEIGH family owned property in the Farnborough in the 1600s. If you search on a2a for Fenny Compton or Farnborough, you will find several abstracts relating to land sales. Hope this helps with your investigations. Can anyone tell me please what would have been the cemetery used if there had been a death around 1923 1926 if the person had been living at Well street or Little Park Street Coventry.Thank you.Margaret.

BURDETT/BURDITT Hi Paul, My 3x gt grandfather's brother William PORTER, (1758-1837), of Walsgrave on Sowe, married an Ann BURDETT (BURDITT) at WOS on11/2/1816. She was baptised in BULKINGTON on 28/7/1777.Ann also came to the PORTER marriage with an illegitimate son, George TURNER, b. 1813 It was his 2nd marriage. They had one child of this union, Elizabeth b.3/5/1816, who later married Thomas WADDOUPS and as members of the LDS church sailed to America. I am in contact with an American direct descendant of hers whose info says that Ann BURDITT was the illegitimate daughter of the widow Mary GIBSON (nee BURDITT) and the widower John HIGGINSON. . My own sources are the WOS baptismal records, transcribed by Carole Eales and the LDS through Family Search and the Hugh Wallis site. The WADDOUPS family, and the Morman emigrations/Great Trek are well documented I don't know why I felt drawn to knowing more about distant "coz" Elizabeth but they make for fascinating reading! The WADDOUPS saga has photographs---and my branch lacks any for several subsequent generations! The 'icing on the cake" has been the recent contact, who found me through Googling! If you have anything relevant about Ann's Bulkington forebears, I would be most interested. NB. The PORTERS of WOS are the maternal side of my paternal PARRITT line. Regards, Muriel.

Hi Everyone, My apologies! I have just detected an error in my Village posting. Henry GOODYER's dates are 1852 -1927. Whilst I am at the computer I will add the dates of his 2 marriages. (1) to Sarah Ann PEGG in 1874, at Bulkington Parish Church. (2) to Alice Watson, (nee Campbell), in 1914, at the Congregational Chapel, Bulkington Regards Muriel
This is the extract from the newpaper that I mentioned earlier - don't know which newspaper?? The corner concerned was near Bradley House Farm Cottages on the Wolvey Road from Bulkington. A BULKINGTON TRAGEDY Motor Cyclists Death at Wolvey Corner A shocking motor fatality occurred on Sunday, the two victims being Joseph BOSTOCK, (60) stockman of Counden who was killed by a fall from the side car of a motor cycle and Joseph Francis PINCHES (32), The Cedars, Counden, the driver of the motor-cycle. Bostock was thrown into the road and immediately killed, while Pinches, who was found lying unconscious, was removed to the Coventry & Warwickshire Hospital where he died the same night. The inquest on Bostock was held at The Parochial Offices, Bulkington, on Wednesday by Mr S.R. Masser, Deputy Coroner. Insp. Yardley watched the case on behalf of the police. Mrs J. M. Wilson, daughter of the deceased, who said she resided at Hinckley, gave evidence of identification. He visited Witness on Sunday being driven to Hinckley by the man, Pinches, and when the party left just before 1pm all of them were quite sober. Mrs Sarah Veasey, (who mentioned that her age was 79) living on the Wolvey Road, said that while looking through her cottage window about 3 oclock on Sunday afternoon, she saw the cycle and side car turn over. When she went out Bostock was lying near the cycle quite dead and Pinches was beneath the machine groaning. She fetched her son to help. George Veasey (son of the previous witness) said blood was running from Bostocks nose and mouth. Witness helped to remove the driver to Dr Ortons surgery at Bedworth. At the point where the accident occurred the road was wide, and the curve was not so dangerous as some others in the district. Edward Clarke, insurance agent, Counden, who was one of the party riding a motor cycle of his own declared that he was not travelling at a greater pace than 20 mph. After leaving Hinckley they called at two licensed houses and each man had one glass of beer at each. On nearing Bulkington he looked back and then found that his companions were not following him. This caused him to ride back and he then found that an accident had occurred. In his opinion Pinches was a cautious and expert driver. About a fortnight before the accident the tyre on the sidecar had been repaired. Witness could not bring himself to think that Pinches at this time was driving at a furious pace. Police Constable Knight said that he accompanied Clarke to the scene of the accident. .... From enquiries in the Hinckley district he found that the statement as to the men having two drinks each was correct. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death. 1891 CENSUS Piece: RG12/2455 Place: Coventry -Warwickshire Enumeration District: 18 Civil Parish: Holy Trinity Ecclesiastical Parish: All Saints Folio: 47 Page: 36 Schedule: 217 Address: 1 White Horse Yard East St ________________________________________ Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks PINCHES Samuel Head M M 51 Gardener (Em'ee) Warwickshire - Foleshill PINCHES Elizabeth W Wife M F 36 - Warwickshire - Coventry PINCHES Samuel T Son S M 14 Cycle Machinist (Em'ee) Warwickshire - Coventry PINCHES Joseph F Son S M 7 Scholar Warwickshire - Foleshill PINCHES Louis B Son S M 6 Scholar Warwickshire - Foleshill PINCHES George L Son S M 4 Scholar Warwickshire - Foleshill PINCHES Phillip A Son S M 1 - Warwickshire - Foleshill THE COVENTRY INQUEST ... mentions John Francis PINCHES of Counden Dr MASTERMAN house surgeon at Coventry & Warwickshire Hospital. George Leo PINCHES of Colchester Street brother to J F Pinches There is another article on the same page which mentions a meeting of Foleshill Board of Guardians & R.D.C. attended by:- S.R. TOPP, Rev. L RICHARDSON, J.F. DEWIS, W. FAUCONBRIDGE, P. BURGESS, J.STANLEY, A.MASON, A. DARTISON, W.GIBSON, H. GREEN, J.DAFFERN & R.EBORALL with Clerk, Mr. A.P. OSWIN. Dr. ORTON reported to this meeting. Mr Thomas GIBSON tendered successfully for the building of a new coalhouse for the infirmary at cost of £34. Complaints were received regarding a lax dustman at Foleshill. Mr. PERKINS had replied saying the man concerned had been ill. Mr WINDASS was instructed to make sure that if there were any more complaints the situation would be rectified. Mrs Sarah Veasey was the wife (widow?) of Willoughby Veasey who farmed Bradley Farm on the Wolvey Road. She came from Sharnford in Leicestershire. The Mrs J. M. WILSON who is mentioned was not my gran altho my gran lived in Hinckley, New Buildings, at this time. My mum, who was aged 5, remembered her grandfather BOSTOCK visiting on a motor bike. It caused quite a stir in the family possibly because of the tragedy. Mrs WILSON could be Jessie May or Alice BOSTOCK. I can't find out who married Mr Wilson!! Anne Paling SHEFFIELD, U.K.
Hi Anne, Have looked up Bulkington Lane in my little old austerity Nuneaton/Bedworth map and it shows that Bulkington Lane crossed the Asby de la Zouche canal, and went TOWARDS south east Nuneaton. Marston Lane led into it, with Marston Jabbett on it. I sez---let it count as it was so close! Please put away the whip and other flogging gear Wendy! Muriel.
BULKINGTON---Connections or researching----- BICKNELL, GOODYER, PEGG, STEANE,WATSON, LUCAS, BONSOR. BICKNELL Sarah 1826-1916 marr. GOODYER Thomas .1830-1864. They had 3 children. Thomas and family left Bulkington for Canada. A year or so later he died and Sarah and chn. returned to Bulkington. Their eldest son was Henry GOODYER1874-1927. Henry marr.(1) Sarah Ann PEGG 1852-1890 (dau of Wm. PEGG). They had 13 children, only 3 survived infancy----and only 2 reached old age. Henry marr (2) Alice WATSON, (nee Campbell, widow. 1873-1975. They had 1 child . Henry had a brother Arthur GOODYER and a sister Emma GOODYER. They both had children. Emma marr George STEANE and they travelled out and settled in Canada .. I am in contact with the Canadian descendant, Barbara , who if someone wishes to add to their knowledge of the family, will I am sure be happy to oblige. She has willingly shared with me. My connection to the GOODYER family is through Alice WATSON who was my great-aunt, and also, as Alice's daughter May WATSON had earlier married Reuben GOODYER, son of Henry, through their surviving child Wilfred. Winnie GOODYER, Henry's daughter, was my mother's first cousoin. Besides material from Barbara I have our family info and photos, and because of the relationships mentioned, some are of GOODYERS. Henry GOODYER lived at Church Street, number 13, I believe. Alice WATSON moved to Bulkington, not sure when, but because of her long life she was resident there for many years----certainly well before I knew her in the early 1930s.She lived at 13 Chequer Street , which has been demolished, and replaced by maisonettes. The reconfiguration of that part of Bulkington has changed Church St---it is no longer as I knew it. LUCAS ---connections to Bulkington. George LUCAS, my grandfather's ½ brother was the publican at the "Rule & Compass" in Leicester St. I cant give you dates, but it was around the 1920s or '30s. George married Alice BONSOR and they had a daughter, Hilda, b.circa 1903, who married Joseph LENTON in 1931 but they had no children. They lived in "Hildane" , Bulkington, until their deaths. My mother , Doris LUCAS was born in one of the little row of houses in Marston Jabbett in March 1904.She and her elder sister walked from there to Collycroft School in Bedworth. Are any of these names of interest to Listers? Regards, Muriel
My connection to Bulkington is my 4xGreat Grandmother, Ann BUNNEY. She was baptised 2 August 1779 the daughter of Thomas BUNNEY & Martha GILBERT. Ann subsequently married Joseph Checklin at Sowe on 11 October 1797 and remained in that parish for the rest of her life. They had lots of children and she died on 6 April 1867. Her known siblings were: William (bap. 18 May 1774) Elizabeth (bap 18 April 1776) Thomas ( bap. 2 April 1785). Ann's father Thomas was baptised at Bulkington on 12 April 1747, the son of William & Mary (I have not yet locatd the marriage and Mary's surname) and lived in Bulkington all his life. Her known siblings were: Bartholomew (bap 10 Nov 1745) William (bap 21 June 1750) Elizabeth (bap 4 Apr 1754) Thomas's father William was baptised on 30 June 1723 at Bulkington and was the son of William & Elizabeth. He has no known siblings. The origins of William & Elizabeth are not yet known but they could be the William Bunney & Elizabeth Cox married at Coventry St Michael on 29 September 1791. Both are described as of Coventry and the marriage was by licence. Peter R Thompson Bedworth Warwickshire UK
My gt grandfather, Joseph BOSTOCK, was killed in a motor bike accident on the Wolvey Road near Bulkington in 1914. He was thrown from the sidecar and killed instantlly. I think the driver was called PINCHES. I have a copy of the newspaper cutting which gives several names of witnesses at the inquest who were from that area. Will sort it out and give you a precis when I return home this afternoon. Anne Paling SHEFFIELD, U.K.
No cheating - I am reaching for the whip <grin> Wendy This is cheating (more than a bit)! But Bulkington Lane was in Nuneaton - I think.
