This record also intrigues me, as this Warwickshire born lad marry a girl baptized at Farthinghor Northampton (not that far away from each other) at Bradford Yorkshire in 1860. 3. SPENCER FAMILIES IN COVENTRY 1775-1840. I've asked for this information before, but having lost all my old e-mails when my computer crashed last weekend, I'll ask it again. Were there any SPENCER families in Coventry in the period 1775-1840? 3. Hi Ron, If you look at my PPP for Warwickshire, there is a section on "Online Parish Clerk" and therein you will find a list of parishes, and how and who has more data. There are also maps for each parish showing the exact location in relation to the rest of Warwickshire etc. This is taken from the book "Tracing Your Ancestors in Warwickshire" by June Watkins & Pauline Saul, and by kind permission of the Warwickshire Record Office. See http://www.hunimex.com/warwick/opc/opc.html for the master page. There is a list of smaller parishes and hamlets (http://www.hunimex.com/warwick/opc/locations.html), and Hodnell is included in that The map is on http://www.hunimex.com/warwick/opc/maps/chapel_ascote.jpg with Hodnell parish being marked with an "H". As for why they were married in Bradford is anyone's guess, try looking at the marriage certificate and church register to see if this was by licence or by banns. Looking at a large scale (1 2/4 inches to a mile) modern map - the "Philips Street Atlas of Warwickshire & Coventry" I see a Hodnell manor listed just off the Banbury road about a mile south of Ladbroke Also on Multimap if you got to Ladbroke, and zoom in to almost (but not completely) maximum magnification, and move down to Chapel Ascote (Chapel Ashcote on the map) then put it on Hybrid view Hodnell is shown if you hover the white rectangle just to the right and below Chapel Ascote. The farm just to the North of Chapel Ascote on the other side of the road, is that listed as Hodnell manor in my Philips atlas. My older version shows the houses at the main road (probably the old gate houses) to be called Hodnell Cottages, but goes short of naming the area that Multimap calls Hodnell just to the South East. You may want to research the earlier occupants of Hodnell Manor - the Bourton family is listed in a Google search ! In fact if you had done a Google search on Hodnell, there was a map waiting to be found ! On the second link (after TYAIW) was http://www.british-towns.net/en/level_4_display.asp?GetL3=6839 with the village clearly shown. In fact if you toddle off down the A444 and at Coventry join the A423 as you pass Ladbroke on Google Maps you will see Hodnell clearly listed, it's probably less than 45 miles from you ! 3. Hello Ron There is a great deal of information online plus maps etc. If you go to the OPC pages on Pickards Pink Pages http://www.hunimex.com/warwick/opc/opc.html Check out Chapel Ascote and click on the links it will give you a map and highlight the location. Hodnell etc were ex- parochial and from memory of the census - only about 4 or 5 families were there in 1841 & 1861. Genuki lists William Palmers estate in 1768 http://www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/Community/record/FamcollD.htm Lists Baronets- Dryden with estates in several counties http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=57108 will also give you a list of the manors and much background information on Hodnel Hope that gives you some clues Good Hunting Wendy Boland Have come across a namesake, baptized Hodnell Warwickshire in 1838. Hodnell is not shown on modern maps, a computer searches list Hodnell & Wills Pastures, Upper and Lower Hodnell's, but not their locations.

No, not to a *record* office. They only hold the parish registers which would have the baptisms and burials. They may also have access via a computer terminal to the GRO indices but they do *not* have any birth or death certificates. If you wanted to pay cash, you would need to go to the *register* office for the area of interest in order to get a copy of a birth or death entry. However, a *record* office also has the marriage registers and you could obtain a copy of a marriage entry for the cost of a photocopy (about 40pence) or for free if they allow you to take a photograph without charge if you were to personally visit. If you chose to use the record office research service, the charge would be in the region of £24 per hour (or possibly part thereof). -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, SOM

    3. Hello Jean, With County Council reorganisations it's likely to be Warwick. Even if there's a Registrar's Office still in Atherstone, it's likely only to be open on a pert-time basis... You'd probably do best to order direct ly fom the GRO at Southport - especially if it's a marriage you're seeking. 2. Ron & Diane
    3. Hi List. Does anyone please have access to the 1871 census for the village of LONG COMPTON. I am looking for details of JAMES HAYWOOD / HAYWARD born approx 1831 in Long Compton. On the 1841 census he is calling himself James Sandford aged 10 and he is with his "adoptive" parents Thomas and Mary Sandford. On the 1851 he is still with the same couple but is now calling himself James Hayward. On the 1861 I believe him to still be with the same couple but now called James Morris. So I would be very grateful if anyone could see either James Haywood or indeed Thomas and Mary Sandford (neither born in Warwickshire) on the 1871 census and send me the details of a scan of the census page. Many thanks Diane All outgoing mail is scanned by NAV.

    3. Hi Betty, The Golden Eagle, the pub that I referred to was at the Foleshill Rd end. It was on the corner at the Eagle St./Foleshill Rd junction. It was not destroyed in the raids but badly damaged. I can remember it being boarded up for some time. That end of Eagle Street was a mess. I nearly added that statement to my first posting, but then began to doubt my recall. However since then the "sights" have "run past me" and I remember the large spaces that were left when the sites were cleared. Maybe a landmine dropped thereabouts---they had a habit of totally "clearing" whole blocks! I travelled on the No 3 "bus daily when attending Wheatley St Central Advanced School, from 1942 to 1944., (before transferring to Stoke Park Grammar)., and the 'bus route left the Foleshill Rd. at that point and continued down Eagle St. and then wended its way to the Stoney Stanton Rd and beyond. I remember there was a road junction---quite a maze, and the 'bus conductor calling, "Five Ways", for that 'bus stop. Two of the debouching roads would have been Harnell Lane East and Harnell Lane West; the former leading to the Stoney Stanton Rd. and the latter to the Foleshill Rd. I have just Googled to find out about the pub I remember. There is no publican mentioned---or picture. Blogs on two sites revealed a little more------ 7/2/16 " The Golden Eagle is shut and boarded up now", and 15/3/07 "now derelict". Reading some accounts of the Blitz confirmed that the area was hit very hard. It would be a targeted because of its proximity to the Coventry Canal , which in the moonlight gave the enemy a clear location guide---and to the factories massed around it Regards, Muriel
