    3. Hi all, I'm new to this list so be gentle with me! just to comment on this - My Mother was baptised Peggy - not a Margaret in sight. 3. I have this week discovered that my husband's great Uncle John Gower married a Gertrude M Teague in Worcester in 1914 and that they then moved to Coventry where he was a Works Foreman (according to the marriage certificate). John's address on the certificate was 74 Princess Street, Coventry. I have found 2 children from this marriage Gertrude M Gower born 1915 and John Gower born 1917 I was wondering if anyone had these names in their family tree. Regards Eveline

    3. Although Polly was most often used as a pet name for Mary, including Mary Ann, it could be used for any of the Mary names (such as Marion/Marian) and another common formation was Molly. It is not restricted to Mary Ann (indeed Polly Ann can be found, baptised Mary Ann). Similarly Meg or Peg or Peggy was usually a pet name for Margaret, but might also be used for any of the Marg names, such as Maisie or Marjorie. There is an interesting discussion of these issues in George Redmond's book 'Christian names in Local and Family History', in which he warns against assuming a 'proper' name from a 'pet name', citing one Betty who was baptised Elizabeth and another baptised Beatrice, belonging to a quite different name group (and many other examples). This doesn't matter when you have the kind of evidence that Gus has, but it can obviously mislead if, for example, you have a servant Molly xxxx in a census and start searching for the xxxx females in baptism registers, and disregard all except the Mary Anns, because you believe that Polly is only a pet name for Mary Ann. However, Gus, you're obviously quite safe in this instance. David Gus Tysoe wrote: > Many thanks to Jacqui & Carole for telling me that my guessed reading was > actually right! There's good street maps on-line. My favourite is ViaMichelin at http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm which has excellent maps at various scales, but there's also Streetmap at http://www.streetmap.co.uk/, Multimap at http://www.multimap.com/ and Google maps at http://maps.google.co.uk/ If you google for "Much Park Street" there's plenty of references, and some nice pictures at http://www.historiccoventry.co.uk/nowandthen/much-pk-st.php. There's also a good range of historic maps of Coventry there. > Is/was Polly a traditional abbreviation or nickname for Mary Ann? Yes. Regards Paul Prescott
