    1. [WAR] Joseph WEST a Police Constable
    2. Ellisat16
    3. Hello all My great grandfather's second wife remarried in 1929 to a Joseph WEST who says he was a Retired Police Constable. Iva Agnes BIRD (nee CROOKS) was 46 at the time of the wedding at Leicester Register Office and her Groom was 76! Joseph was widowed also; I believe his first wife was Elizabeth. Joseph was born in Longford Warwickshire in 1853 if I have the right person from census records. Is anyone else researching this WEST family? Regards, Janet Northampton UK

    1. [WAR] George JAMES & Sarah Selina Pring in Rugby - Foster chld Donald Beaumont
    2. Jan Kokrda
    3. I am trying to find a connection for Donald Beaumont who was a foster child with Sarah (Sally) James in 1945 timeframe. George James was a person in the government at the time. I see many Beaumonts but wonder if Donald is still living. He was 14 in 1947 and have a picture of him. His parents were killed and he did not have any family so Sarah took him in as a foster child at the time. That is the last we heard of Sarah James too. Her husband had died by this time in her life in 1947. Sarah and George James were both born in 1872 and originally came from Cullompton where I think both were born. If any one has any information more about Donald Beaumont also would be interested to learn more about him. She lived at 149 Wood St. in Rugby. Jan in US

Home access depends on the license the local authority has bought. My local library's is for library access only. The license also limits the number of people who can access the site at any one time and that can be variable. My local authority has a very low number - 3. 3. The newspaper library at Colindale is being closed. The paper newspapers are being removed to storage "safely" away from users :-( I recently read an article describing how some are so well used they are falling to pieces. The publicised plans are for relevant items to be filmed and made available at St Pancras. Somehow all this sounds so much like the current debacle with FRC/GRO/TNA...and all those various "birds" which seem to have been ousted by a cuckoo <g> So if you need to look at newspapers, do it soon. That said, local libraries often hold film copies of the newspapers of that town/district. It is always worth checking before heading for London/Colindale; but if you want specific years, be specific in your enquiry. I went two counties away to use papers, having checked on a website for years, booked in without being specific to the actual month/year I needed, got there and guess what...yes, that short period was not in their holding!! If you contact the Record Office, you may well find they have a map or other information relating to it. I was looking for the whereabouts of the toll gate in Walton (SOM) and the Record Office had a detailed (and enormous) map dated 1820 showing the location. They also had another map about 20 years later together with a survey which also showed it and gave details of the toll road itself. Another possible source is the UK Parliament site which will have the Acts of Parliament for the setting up of the toll roads together with any Acts amending the original. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

    3. Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can claim George MALLIBOURN whose marriage appears in the Dec quarter of 1837 in the Coventry reg. district. Possible brides were Elizabeth CLEAVER, Ann HOLYOAK, Sarah TRAIN and Mary WASHBONE. Was this the same George who with wife Hannah had their daughter Mary baptised in Wolston in Dec 1846 (appears as MILBURN)? Are they the George MILLER and Hannah MILLER who are buried in Wolston? I am trying to eliminate Mary from a list of possible Mary MILLERs who might have been my husband's great-great-grandmother, a lady who was economical with the truth. With a lot of help from Wendy, we have a very likely candidate but I now have to rule out the others. Any help gratefully received, Jacqui in Brisbane, Australia

    3. Hello Joe, The over-simplistic answer just could be that thay were 'on duty' and up all night - and that an overly-legalistic Enumerator didn't list them because they "didn't sleep there that night". I've seen enumeration schedules that list houses with that comment - and another where the Enumerator reported that he'd "accounted for everybody in the Parish apart from two Police Constables who were patrolling all night". (And then not only didn't name them, but also failed to record their wives as "policeman's wife")... Although you are more likely right that because the Toll-house was (likely to be) at a point where potentially 3 Enumeration Districts met - and all the Enumerators believed it fell outside their remit... 3. Thanks Heather so much for the website. I only entered "Joseph Hands" and found numerous references in 1842-1843 to the bankruptcy of Joseph Hands and Elizabeth Gill, ribbon manufacturers of Coventry. They are in my database although not necessarily related to my gggrandfather Joseph Hands, watchmaker of Coventry. On the other hand, a notice of the dissolution of partnership of Joseph and William Hands, butchers of Corley, did relate to my gggrandfathers cousins. My Joseph's father William was born in Corley Moor, and I had already found cousin Joseph in the 1841 census as a butcher in Corley. I can see I will be very busy with this new (to me) resource.
