The most obvious source is to go to the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library [VWML] site of the English Folk Dance and Song Society [EFSDS] at http://library.efdss.org/cgi-bin/home.cgi Click on Search Indexes then Folk Song Indexes then Cross Search. Enter Warwickshire as the search term and search. You will have a listing of over 300 songs collected in Warwickshire [not the music or words - but you can then search elsewhere for those]. I hope this helps. John Frearson Past Bagman, The Morris Ring
Could someone please help in finding information about folk somgs in Warwickshire in the 1800s? I am looking for fiddle music and sung music. Many, many thanks, Mary Jane Phillips in New York City

Thank you for details of info on certificates....to be honest I am still trying to find the 'brickworks' my 'family' owned in Staffordshire....well they worked in a cement works! That is close enough.....not to mention the one who 'married a DUKE!' - well he was, a Mr Duke and then there was the one who married a 'CAPTAIN' - well he was, a Salvation Army Captain.....all genealogy is interesting isn't it? Sad about the Duke and Captain though. All the best. Robyn, Qld. Oz. Gus, can you tell us, and maybe others, what on earth WAS on a wedding certificate before 1837. With so many people having the same names, how did one differentiate between John Small of Blogs Street who married Mary Dunnnowho, and John Small of Jones Street who also married a Mary, both in the same district....how would you ever find YOUR John or for that matter, your Mary? Remember there are still many places in the world where there is no systematic registration of births, marriages and deaths but normally everyone in the neighbourhood, village, tribe or clan knows who's who going back several generations. Some societies may have locally written genealogies, but in many cases they still rely on oral history. That would have been the case in Britain. Everyone in the street or parish would have known directly or by hearsay which John married which Mary. If you moved to another place or to the big city where nobody knew you, there was nothing to stop you calling yourself anything you liked. Few people would have come into contact with any administration outside the parish where they lived. If necessary, someone would vouch for them - an employer, a landlord, the local vicar, etc. Many British people still have an aversion to being asked for proof of identity, hence the widespread opposition to carrying identity cards. I had a case where two men of the same age with the same names (who it later turned out were first cousins) married women with the same first names in the same year in the same area. It took several years, but we finally proved which couple was which, through circumstantial evidence that led eventually to sufficient proof - a place of birth of a descendant still living at the time of the 1851 census, the name of relative later living with the family, a surname given as a middle name somewhere else in the family, etc. If there are wills they can be useful as fathers often described their married daughters as "wife of X" and the grandchildren may be named at the same time, thus aiding identification. Just saw a headline that if the new British Govt has its way, 2011 will be the last official census in its present form. Hi Robyn For a basic breakdown of information to be found in Parish Registers, with examples see http://www.british-genealogy.com/resources/registers/home.htm Pre Civil registration is where it starts to get really interesting You might like to have a look at the free online classes on familysearch http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp (lower half of the screen under Family History Library) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Gus, can you tell us, and maybe others, what on earth WAS on a wedding > certificate before 1837. Name of father to both sides who marry, SHOULD be on the wedding certificate. You could ask Birmingham if you think they came from Warwickshire, just email them and say, would parents names be on the certificate if I got it for a wedding, hopefully before first child born, hopefully......a couple of years before first child born. THAT way at least you have the fathers' names only. Mum seemed not to be on until later. You can only ask!!! Found John Ashford marrying Fanny Normicutt on 23.8.1747 on igi. John Small chr 14.7.1724 F William M Mary Rebecca chr 6.10.1750 St Phillips, B.Ham fits time frame for both her and John. > Name of father to both sides who marry, SHOULD be on the wedding > certificate. I've not been following this thread, but *IF* this marriage was of the parents of John the First Fleeter - which it appears to be from the context - then the Register will NOT show the fathers' names :-( That specific requirement wasn't introduced until the adoption of Civil Registration on 1 July 1837. To Dot in New Hampshire, I am sorry I can't help you with William R Murcott. Good luck, Norma.
Hi, Thank you , I thought the ship was Grenada but wasn't sure. I have googled the storm in the past and neither Abraham or The Granado was mentioned. I sure have learnt a lot about the storm, though. I will keep looking and hope to find someone with him on their tree. Cheers, Norma.
Thank you anyway. Hello All, I am researching Murcott/ Webb. I have a book on Cubbington and there is a mention on Mariner Abraham Murcott who lost his life during the Great Storm of 1703. The ship went down and all lives were lost near the Isles of Scilly. Can anyone tell me the name of the ship and Abraham details, please. Thank you. Norma Tonks nee Webb.
Hi Norma, I am also researching Webb's in Warwickshire, specifically around Coventry. What areas are you researching? My e-mail address is [email protected], so you can reply off list. HI, If you do a google search for the great storm of 1703, Wikipedia lists the ships in the royal navy that were sunk during that storm. Perhaps there is a listing of the crew for those ships with the govt archives. doing another search Captain Murcott was on the Granado --- On Wed, 7/7/10, Norma Tonks <[email protected]> wrote: > From: Norma Tonks <[email protected]> > Subject: [WAR] Murcott > To: [email protected] > Date: Wednesday, July 7, 2010, 7:43 AM > Hello All, I am researching Murcott/ > Webb. Could someone please help with information on SPENCER families in or near Coventry, 1785-1796? My earliest documents are for the birth of Thomas Martin SPENCER (Coverntry, November 10, 1792) and marriage (London, May 1812). Members of this family were bakers, tallow chandlers, candle makers, and blacksmiths. Many thanks, Mary Jane Phillips in New York City.
I would be delighted to make contact with any descendants of Arthur WELLS & Naomi SMITH, married in 1869 in Rugby, Warwickshire. Arthur was the son of William WELLS and was born in Bretford, Warwickshire in 1847. Naomi SMITH was the daughter of James SMITH and Ann MALIN and was born in 1851 in Long Itchington, Warwickshire. Arthur and Naomi's children were: William b. 1869 Albert E. b. 1872 Ernest b. 1875 James b. 1876 Henry J. 1877 Lewis b.1879 Fanny b. 1882 These dates may not be 100% correct. Thank you Stella Smith New Zealand
