    3. Apologies John I have tried to check out the freecensus website - only returns I get (1851 only one anything turned up for) for the "Union Passage" address don't include J Norris. Tried searching on "J Norris" but didn't manage to get any in Union Passage. Will check out the directories and see what I can find. Thanks for your suggestions. Cheers Karen

    3. Hi Karen, 1850's was early days indeed for photography - whilst I do have several references to Joseph Norris in Union Passage (see my web page on http://www.hunimex.com/warwick/photogs.html) I don't really have a date for the studio. What quality is the photo ? Do you have the 'negative' - is it, orh the photo on a glass plate ? That may help date it. Try doing a search for him on the web.... I came up with the following: in 1861 census he was 28 (e.g. born about 1833) and a photographer living at 336 Butcher Place If I have the same guy in 1851 he was living with his parents at 78 Lichfield st, and occupation was 'Mathematical Instrumer' probably working for his father He is reported to have died in 1885 I thus doubt the photo is as early as 1850's I looked at an 1862 directory of Birmingham, and he was a 'photographic artist' in Union Passage then That would put your picture at earliest 1860 - if it was one of his first pictures, through to about 1890s, if the business carried on using his name after his death - at some time it became the "Birmingham Photographic Studio" Hope that helps Happy Hunting Pickard Trepess ----- Original Message ----- From: "A & K Hitchcock" <[email protected]a.co.nz> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, August 13, 2010 4:54 AM Subject: [WAR] Photographer - Dates > > > > "J Norris" > "Union Passage" > "Birmingham" > > Hello listers > > I have a photograph which I am trying to date, taken by the above > photographer. > > Can anyone help me narrow it down? > > I suspect 1850s or 1860s. > > Cheers > Karen > > >

    3. Karen, Regarding the use of the Directory site for the Norris photographer - You will find he was listed in a directory in 1862. Search " Norris w/10 Union " [i.e. looking for the two words within ten words of each other] and there are plenty of hits - some of course will be incorrect!! John

    3. Hi Listers Looking for a marriage for Ann TOONE to Joseph SHAW would have been about 1850 (its is not on Free BMD) The SHAW family were living in Bentley at the time and Joseph's first wife Mary Ann ?? (also cant find THIS marriage c1834) she must have died. His Will here in NZ stated that his last 4 children were from his second wife (extremely helpful of him I must say!) On LDS Family Search I found a baptism for an Ann TOONE on 5 Apr 1818 in Baxterley (just a stones throw from Bentley) and this could be her but nothing for a marriage sadly. I would appreciate any help thanks Patsy

But to keep the WAR connection running, George in 1851 sounds as if he *may* have served as Apprentice to the head of the household, and had only just completed his time. A journeyman would be an Employee, and would therefore qualify as a 'Servant' by the word-usage of the time. The rest is all Worcestershire - and with nary a hint of Gloucestershire as far as the references to theLONGs are concerned... Evenlode was one of Worcestershire's many detached portions - an Island Parish surrounded on 3 sides by Gloucestershire, and the 4th by Oxfordshire, while its northernmost point touched Warwickshire - and remained so for appreciably longer than any of your listed LONGs ever did. It was finally handed-over to Gloucestershire in 1931 in a fairly-major set of Parish-swappings involving WOR, GLS - and WAR, so the connection's still there. And it was in Stow on the Wold Registration District... 3. Sorry, not me. You can post a message there if you join for free. You can't actually contact the person, but you can post a message on the correct section where they are, e.g. Bevingtons of blah blah.....the person then gets a message that there is a new post and can read it, and so on. So you can both read the messages on the site, you just can't post each other direct, if that is the way to say it. SO...you need to join for free, put in the right place and name, and write your message on the page, maybe not all of it, just maybe the bare details, then anyone else wanting info on that can get back to you via the page and YOU will then get a message that someone has replied. A good service if you do not particularly want to join yet another group. Some sites are strange....I had one from Qld. quite a large one, where a member wanted info on a family and I had heaps. Contacted them and told them that their member so and so was asking and that I had heaps of info and could they tell her that. Got a rude email back saying you can't access details without joining. I sent one back pointing out that I WANTED nothing, I had most of it, I was trying to GIVE it. Got no response that time. SO their member who wants stuff will not get it because the rude secretary said so. Now I guess I could write to them and put on the outsidfe of the envelope for member such and such, but what if it gets opened by the sec who then emails me AGAIN!! She just did not read my email first, then didn't want to admit that was the case...like I am worried??. Robyn Shaw, Qld. 3. Hello Gary, I can't help very much with the family, but may be able to give a little assistance on the Geography... 3. Hi, Just wondered if anyone could link in to the above couple & family - they are my g-g-g-grandparents & so far the only Census we can find them on is the 1841 for Hanley Castle in the County of Worcester (HO107/1205/1 Pg 28) both aged 30 yrs & born in same County. Richard & Elizabeth were married in Evenlode, Gloucester in 1827. On page 29 it lists their children at the time and Elizabeth's mother:- Elizabeth LONG age 12 - my g-g-grandmother George LONG age 10 Mary LONG age 8 William LONG age 3 Joyce LONG age 1 Hannah SMITH age 60 All above born in same County In 1851 Elizabeth LONG (child) was living with her husband, mother-in-law & son in Wolverley, Worcs. George LONG was living at 49 Coleshill Street, Birmingham with a family whose Head was a Grocer. George's trade was listed as Journeyman but relationship to head was Servant. Birthplace listed as Evenlode, Worcester Mary LONG was living at Old Walsall Road, Handsworth, Birmingham. She was listed as a servant & the head was a Retired Agent. Mary's birthplace was also listed as Evenlode, Worcester. We cannot locate William LONG & Joyce LONG on the 1851 Census so the chances are that they died young. Looking on FreeBMD it seems they were both possibly born at Stow-on-the-Wold. If anyone can link in to any of the above family it would be great to hear from you, or if anyone can add/help with more information it would be greatly appreciated, Regards, Garry LONG, Warwickshire
