    2. Your best bet may be to look up the family in the 1930 census and work backwards. Search for them by their location and family make-up. Children with unusual names are sometimes easier to search for than parents with common first names. If you don't have access to the census, I could see if I could find them (I'd need all the names and approximate birth dates as well as where they lived). 3. The idea of searching by unusual first name is a great one. I had an ancestor of another surname, who married a woman with first name of Modena. It was a brick wall. Early research had her married to a different brother! I searched early census data -- 1800, 1810, 1820 -- found family of an Elizuer, whom I thought might be my GG Grandfather; but no way to tell if it was my guy - and family members were not named in early censuses. Finally, in 1830, while searching for all Modena women in the US, she turned up in the same location where Elizuer was found. So, he had died in the last 10 years, and she was head of the family -- by comparing distribution of children and ages, I could confirm they were the same family I was looking for. They had relocated from another part of the state, and were living near a son... who also had a rather unusual first name.
