    1. [WARREN] Re: Two Thomas Warrens - 1600s
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Warren, Gookins, Greenleafe, Markham Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/WZVBAIB/3023.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: At the ripe old age of 14 Thomas Warren of Jamestown was brought to America by his cousin Daniel Gookin, who had immigrated to Virginia in 1621. Thomas Warren's lineage is much discussed and documented in the A HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE GOOKIN FAMILY of England, Ireland and America, compiled and edited by Richard N. Gookins, Salem, OR. This book was followed by a 1200 page+plus page book called "The WARREN LINES - Extracted and Augument from 1991 edition of ......" In this 2nd Gookins book there is a lengthy discussion about Thomas Warren and his three wives. If you have not reviewed that book I strongly encourage you to do so. The Library of Congress has a copy and I know there are copies of the book in many libraries across the country. The following is an extraction from p. 77 in the Warren Lines referred to above: "...The error in VMH&B, 6:201 linking Thomas Warren Sr. with Susan Greenleafe as 1st wife actually refers to: "Thomas Warren, 300 acs Chas. Citty Co., 20 Nov. 1635, p.314: (land specified) in right of his wife Susan Greenleafe, the relict of Robert Greenleafe ... Ancient Planter ..." (Early Va. Fam. Along the James River), 1:2, Henrico & Goochland - recd 11/82 fr. Iris H. Zimmerman, Bertram, Tex.) Further, according to the muster of Robert Greenleafe, wife Susan was 23 in 1620 (i.e. b. ca 1597!). To compound the matter, in 1939 (VMH&B, 47:369), Dr. B.C. Holtzclaw remarks, "it is true that a land grant was made in 1636 to a Thomas Warren who married Susan Greenleafe in Charles City (cf Nugent, p.34), but later grants in 1636 and 1637 to Thomas Markham in Henrico Co. as marrying Susan Greenleafe seem to show the name Warren was an error. (cf Nugent, pp. 45, 60)". Ref. above, and: Info. 1950, J.G.W. MacClamoch, Greensboro, N.C.; VMH&B, v. 43; Boddie, Colonial Surry, pp. 66-7! 2; Boddie, Va. Hist.
