You have your g/grand parents marriage certificate so you will know this was registered in Romford. Looking at the census going back from 1871 to 1851 inclusive, I find your family, James' father Thomas (as you said) and his father in turn was another Thomas. All the wives and siblings are shown and they all lived in the Chadwell Heath/ Romford/ Dagenham districts. I did not immediately have success in the 1851 or the 1881 census but would do a longer search if of interest. I have print outs of what I have done so far but I have yet to configure my scanner.
