    2. I think I may have a little information for you. My ancestors are buried in small cemetery in Clay Co., Illinois. I need to look at my photos, but I have photos of the Whitmore, Warren, Wantland, Songer gravestones. I know some of my Warrens are Whitmores. Is this connected to you in any way? Nancy Silvey Hunter 242 Royallsprings Parkway OFallon, MO 63368 In a message dated 2/13/2009 11:01:06 P.M. The marriage is in a compilation (no parents were given.) Source is:. (Knorr, Catherine Lindsay. Marriage Bonds and Ministers' Returns of Surry County, Virginia, 1768-1825. Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1982, p. 37.) My ancestor Holleman Whitmore, married Eleanor Frances Warren in 1823. I wonder if he and John might be brothers, or cousins.... There is a John Whitmore who served during the Rev. War listed in Surry and Prince George Counties (he had more than one wife - one was an Eppes) and there is a John Whitmore listed in census data after 1820 near my Whitmores in Prince George, and Chesterfield Counties -- Perhaps one is related. Is anyone aware of any research on Scot immigrants in the 1600 - 1750 time frame that might discuss why/how they came. Were they already in London - i.e., due to King James, who was Scottish and became King in 1603? Was any recruiting done in Scotland for the early settlers? I understand that my ancestors were probably tobacco growers. I assume that was the predominant occupation once the English realized gold was not going to be easy.... I have linked a Surry Co. Whitmore -- Edmund, b. 1794, to my Holleman Whitmore, b 1799, via DNA testing - exact relationship unknown. The lines are Scottish -- am anxious to find more information and connections with any Surry Co., or nearby county, Whitmores. (I have not found "Whitmore" in early Scotland, but do find a few in Scotland now in the same geographic area of my cousins' DNA matches). Evidence is that my ancestors probably lived in Edinburgh, and surrounding counties --There are other close DNA matches, with roots in SE Scotland -- but different surnames. Wigmore is definitely found in Scotland from the early 1300s, so the lines could go back before surnames. I have not found a Wigmore to do DNA testing yet. Other DNA related names are Musgrave(s), Liddle, Dagliesh/Daglish, and Park. I also know that the Surry Co. Whitmore DNA is not at all related to the Whitmores in western Virginia or New England - those non Scots liines came from England - some from Switzerland/Germany.... Here are the earliest names I can find: Wigmore is listed in the 2nd charter of the VA Company -- I realize he did not necessarily go to VA. Robert Whitmore is found in 1619-1625? record of Jamestown survivors, Thomas Whitmore is on the ship Constance in about 1635-6 - named in a book as waylaid in the islands - do not know if he ever got to VA. Joseph Whitmoald is a 20 yr. old in 1659 in Surry, Nicholas Whitmore is in Charles City in the late 1600s. (he had sons). There is also a Thomas owning land in Surry in 1745, my GGG Grandfather, David, was there in the late 1700s; and a Colin Whitmore died in Surry abt. 1823. I hope this email finds another Scottish Whitmore out there someday. There are two Surry lines already rooting for you! 3. Hi Nancy, It is my belief that the Virginia Whitmores and the Warrens started out in the same general area of Surry County,.VA. I sent my message to both the Rootsweb Warren list and Surry County, and the Surry Historical Society. My direct line of Whitmores did not go to Illinois, but certainly, it is possible that siblings or cousins did. DNA has been my biggest help -- a line of English Whitmores went from MD to western VA very early in colonial times. English Whitmores also settled very very early in New England. So far, it is only in Surry VA that I find the Scottish Whitmores. Their name could have been Wigmore/Wigmer/etc., in Scotland, but i can't find that name in VA -- and have NOTHING to prove a connection other than finding DNA matches in the area of Scotland where the Wigmore's lived. My Warren is Eleanor Frances Warren, dau. of James Warren (a Methodist minister) and Caty Andrews - Eleanor was born about 1798 or 1799. There are many other Warrens in the area. The earliest settler is Thomas Warren, who came to Surry about 1640, and he had several sons -- Eleanor turns out to be his descendant. I have been in touch with Catherine Whitmore Camfield, whose father moved from VA to Iowa, (it was her uncle who did the DNA test to compare to my cousins). Anyway, she told me there are Warrens in her line -- but they were not in the genealogy information she shared with me --- I can try to put you in touch with her if you wish. I do encourage you to search on Rootsweb -- there is a woman who posted her research on the Warrens -- it is not all correct, for she led me down the wrong path in my research -- but, there are hundreds of names!! If your Whitmores trace to Surry, VA, or Prince George Co., or Chesterfield County VA, I would be interested -- I have several names from 1600s to 1800s -- but quite a few are just in my "unrelated" list at this point. If you have a Whitmore from SE Va who would do a DNA test, that would be huge! If cost is an issue, perhaps my other Whitmore might help. Thanks for getting in touch!
