This is very interesting to me. Warren was a native of Mass. who moved to Sacramento, California in 1849 for the gold rush, ended up being heavily involved in horticultural and agricultural matters there - founded the annual Sacto State Fair, edited the first ag. journal, The California Farmer, started the State Ag. Society, and had the first nursery and seed store in Sacto. His first wife died there and Lizzy Wiley was his second marriage. The Rev. A.H. Myers who performed the ceremony was also a famous horticulturist, rasing fruit trees and flowers at his nursery in Alameda, California. Hi! Yesterday, I received the estate papers of Eli R. Warren. The papers showed a death date of August 31, 1891. To the best of my knowledge, researchers into this line of the Warren name have not had his death date. The estate papers show 4 children having an interest in his estate--Benjamin S., Elvira Choat, Hattie Bolinger, and Robert Warren. I believe that son Willis Warren was still alive, but living in Kentucky. In my records, I have a total of 13 children attached to this couple, but I have my doubts about a number of them. My notes also show a possible first marriage prior to the marriage to Ellen, this being suspicioned by a few researchers, but I have absolutely no evidence for that. Eli R. Warren was my 4th gr grandfather, father of Mary Ellen Warren Carr Hancock. He was married to Ellen Unknown. He was born in NC about 1807, the son of Willis Warren. He grew up in Lincoln County, TN. He started his family there, but in the 1840 census, he was in Calloway County, KY. In the 1850 census, he can be found in Marshall County, KY. In the very early 1850s, there are records of Eli buying land in Pope County. According to researcher Cindy Kinard, this line of the Warren family moved to Lincoln County, TN from Nash County, NC. They then resided in Dover, NH. One would assume that because a notation from the marriage record says Chadbourne 3rd that we're looking for a couple Chadbourne(s) previous, and maybe back to James but... you know what they say about assumptions... Sally was born in Ma about 1794, and I know they lived in Dover in 1830 and passed by 1850 as she is listed as a widow and is with her daughter Abigail Sanderson on the 1850 census in Dover. I believe Abigail had quite a few brothers and one was likely Chadbourne 1824-1909, musician, who 1st married Clara Twombly (1822-1869), 2nd Martha Allen (1823-1919) Buried Pine Hill Cemetery Dover, NH. Sally (Swain) Warren died Oct. 6 1870 in Haverhill; widow; 76yrs;consumption; Mother listed as Sally Warren(which doesn't make sense) - no other info on orig record. Any info would be appreciated. Hi Nancy, It is my belief that the Virginia Whitmores and the Warrens started out in the same general area of Surry County,.VA. I sent my message to both the Rootsweb Warren list and Surry County, and the Surry Historical Society. My direct line of Whitmores did not go to Illinois, but certainly, it is possible that siblings or cousins did. DNA has been my biggest help -- a line of English Whitmores went from MD to western VA very early in colonial times. English Whitmores also settled very very early in New England. So far, it is only in Surry VA that I find the Scottish Whitmores. Their name could have been Wigmore/Wigmer/etc., in Scotland, but i can't find that name in VA -- and have NOTHING to prove a connection other than finding DNA matches in the area of Scotland where the Wigmore's lived. My Warren is Eleanor Frances Warren, dau. of James Warren (a Methodist minister) and Caty Andrews - Eleanor was born about 1798 or 1799. There are many other Warrens in the area. The earliest settler is Thomas Warren, who came to Surry about 1640, and he had several sons -- Eleanor turns out to be his descendant. I have been in touch with Catherine Whitmore Camfield, whose father moved from VA to Iowa, (it was her uncle who did the DNA test to compare to my cousins). Anyway, she told me there are Warrens in her line -- but they were not in the genealogy information she shared with me --- I can try to put you in touch with her if you wish. I do encourage you to search on Rootsweb -- there is a woman who posted her research on the Warrens -- it is not all correct, for she led me down the wrong path in my research -- but, there are hundreds of names!! If your Whitmores trace to Surry, VA, or Prince George Co., or Chesterfield County VA, I would be interested -- I have several names from 1600s to 1800s -- but quite a few are just in my "unrelated" list at this point. If you have a Whitmore from SE Va who would do a DNA test, that would be huge! If cost is an issue, perhaps my other Whitmore might help. Thanks for getting in touch!
