I have ordered civil war records last year and have not gotten an answer yet to some of my requests .It has taken me as long as a year to get a reply from the the Service mens -- St Louis Records location . Has anyone else had this problem ?
FYI; One way to obtain them is through a local researcher. The cost isn't that much greater, especially when you take into consideration that the National Archives does not send you the whole file !! They determine and send you the major pages that they determine are pertinent to your request. They could be correct and they could be wrong in regards to the value of the pages selected, only you can determine that by having "all" the pages that exist in the file. In one example with my ancestors, I had written to obtain the war records of an ancestor's son, (a ggg uncle). The Archives did a good job of sending me all the data on that son, what the Archives did not send me was the other pages in the file that were on that sons father,(my gggg grandfather) of whom there was no known record that he had served. There were numerous letters in the file from the sons mother that covered her attempt to collect a pension on the father. ( my gggg grandfather). All information that would have been lost had it not been for a hired researcher that ontained CLEAR & LEGIBLE copies of ALL items in that file. My gggg grandmother finally did collect a pension for her son (ggg uncle) but did not collect one for her husband (gggg grandfather) as he having contracted Scurvy, failed to respond with the password in his rush to the latrines and was shot by the sentry, consequently his name never appeared on any pay, or muster rolls. Heres a researcher that will do an excellent job for you. He lives near the DC Archives.
