    1. Question about filling out form NATF 85
    2. Mary D. Taffet
    3. Hello, I am a new subscriber to this list, and probably won't be here very long. I just need to know how to properly fill out the NATF 85 form to request a copy of the pension file for my ggg-grandfather who served in the War of 1812 in Vermont. In block 3, it asks what branch of the service -- Army, Navy or Marine Corps. I have no idea what to put there. I'm assuming Army, but I'm not sure. How can I know for sure what the correct response is there? Also, in block 7, it asks whether Infantry, Cavalry or Artillery if the veteran was in the Army. I have no idea what to put there, if anything. I also don't know what to put for block 8 (rank -- officer or enlisted) or block 9 (kind of service -- volunteer or regulars). All I do know is that my ggg-grandfather, Eli SMITH Jr. fought with Capt. Samuel Wheeler's Company in Vermont. Any suggestions for how to properly fill out this form? Also, I put both the WC- number and the SC- number in the space for Pension File Number -- I assume this is appropriate? -- Thanks for any suggestions, Mary Taffet Syracuse, NY mdtaffet@syr.edu
