Hello! I'm new to the group. I have read that one of my ancestors served in the War of 1812 and was one of the last surviving pensioners. Is there anywhere/way to find out this information? Thanks. Sharon M. (GOOD) Jones goodgenes@lakeside.net http://www.lakeside.net/goodgenes sjones@cecomet.net
There is a published index to the pension files: "Index to War of 1812 Pension Files", transcribed by Virgil D. White. The National Historical Publishing Company, Waynesboro, Tennessee, 1989. It is three volume hard bound set of those who received / applied for a pension. Some are widows pension (may be of great value as the wife had to prove not only the service of her husband - but also her marriage, as my ancestor died early and his widow's pension is a mine of information). Many of the larger libraries have these books. Ancestory.com has a CD-ROM, 'Military Records: WAR OF 1812 MUSTER ROLLS', Item #2019 for sale. The web site says it has a searchable database of 580,000 names.
