    3. Good Evening Ann, My name is Trevor Hamilton, from Toronto. IF you have been following mail on this site, there is a possibility you may remember the problem up here. The minister of the Cathedral in downtown Toronto, tried to sell the adjoining cemetery to a land developer for a condo. The condo would have towered over the Cathedral's spire, which is the second highest in North America. The skeletal remains of some 3000 plus would have been disposed of, but it was no bodies business how. The cemetery was 'active' from approximate 1790 to 1840. There were buried there the soldiers killed in the War of 1812 when York (Toronto) was captured by the Americans , April 27th, 1813. I have researched names and have identified 18 soldiers and 3 naval persons. Some of whom died after the battle and the Americans used the church for a hospital. Sounded reasonable that was where they would have been buried. The only known name of KIA was General Pike. This list has been posted on the 'War of 1812' Never fails, some lady wrote to me that her nth grandfather was killed there, name given was Benna Benni? Paule Pauley of the 6th Regiment. Unfortunately that regiment did not fight in this battle. Any chance you could throw some light on this name. The poor soul was adamant in her facts. By the way, our group won the fight so the Minister had our spokesperson, a young lady arrested and incarcerated. Helps if your are the police chaplain for the area. Lawsuit is pending against the minister and shall we say, statements of dubious facts were used. Thanks kindly Trevor Hamilton.

    3. #52 1985 Pennsylvania History published by the Pa Historical Association Article:A Poor But Honest Sodger: Colonel Cromwell Pearce, The 16th U.S. Infantry, And The War of 1812 by John C. Fredericksen page 135 Concerning troop being readied for the "expedition" to York. "The 6th, 15th, and 16th Regiments of Infantry were organized in one brigade, commanded by General Pike: the 6th on the right, the 16th on the left, and the 15th in the centre" mentions casualties: 38 killed 222 wounded, many mortally. page 138 Report of the killed and wounded of the United States Troops at the Capture of York, Upper Canada. 29 April 1813 6th Regiment of Infantry: killed by explosion: 1 sgt, 2 cpls, 10 privates. Wounded by explosion; 4 captain 4 subalterns 5 sgts, 5 cpls, 88 privates, total 177. also gives same for 15th, 16th, artiller, 21st, and 14th. total killed by ball 14 men killed by explosion; 38 killed, total killed 52. wounded by ball; 222, by explosion; 254; total wounded 306. You may have quite a few more men buried there than you think! Here in Pennsylvania it is unlawful to disturb any cemetery, historical or otherwise without the permission of the court, and then if the court agrees, the cemetery must be moved under strict rules to another site, but greed often finds a way to legally desecrate historical sites such as the proposed gambling site at Gettysburg. Our national archives would have the names probably in the 6th regiment rosters and also in pension records, etc. Good luck in your effort, Mark S.
