    3. Thanks so much Mark! This adds a little meat to Daniel's bones for me--now I know a little bit more than his name--and to think, it only took me 30 years to find this! Eva "Mark S. The troops rendezvoused at a camp near Meadville, Pa, and when organized marched to Erie then Buffalo where the joined Gen. John Smyth's Army of the Centre. The plan was to cross into Canada at Black Rock, near Buffalo, the regulars crossed and took out the enemies defenses and all was ready. The men embarked and were in their boats waiting when Gen. Smyth lost his nerve and cancelled the invasion. About a day later the same thing happened, the men were enraged. Accounts say that 4000 men fired their rifles off into the air and a large number deserted and went home. One account states that some even fired at Smyth and the newspapers ran charges and counter charges to who was to blame. By early December most of the troops had left then the remainder were discharged. Smyth was dropped from the rolls of the US Army, returned to VA and got elected to Congress! Keller's company was a volunteer company meaning they were formed up as a special volunteer unit and would be taken first and in the place of a draft. They were allowed to wear their own uniforms by militia law regulations, etc. Being Riflemen they were more light infantry. Being made up of men who wanted to fight many of these volunteer organizations served with high distinction. According to the muster roll dated June 12, 1812, the officers were: Captain Casper Kelly 1 Lt. John Brubaker 2 Lt. John Crawford. Additionally, several years ago I received some information from NARA which stated "Piper's Riflemen" -- nothing else. As an aside, I found Daniel Hamilton in Allegheny Twp., Somerset Co., in the 1810 census and then on the tax rolls for the same from 1810 through 1814. I know he and his family were in Washington Co. PA by 1819 as his last child was born there. He is on the 1820 census in Washington Co. but then disappears --according to family information he and his wife were dead by 1822/23. I had always guessed that it was the War of 1812 and his service in it that caused him to move west. I'm wondering if there is any way to find out about bounty land that he may have been awarded but never claimed? Thanks so much for your help. After all these years of looking for Daniel but hitting dead ends everywhere--even just to see his name listed somewhere makes me do the happy dance! Eva "Mark S. There are no histories of these units and just a little is found in the history books. Does anyone know where I can locate a history of that unit's service during the War of 1812?
