    1. HELP, Please
    2. Perhaps there is someone much more knowledgeable on War of 1812 records than I and can help me. My ancestor is Daniel Razor, whose roster record I have him assigned to Bradley's Regiment, VA Militia. His record says at bottom "See also William Pharris". Another roster record says "Absent detached in place of Martin Couch removed". It further says "See case of William Pharris". Roster record of William Pharris, Bradley's Regiment, VA Militia says "See also Daniel Razor:" Another roster record of William Pharris says "Deserted Feb. 15, 1813 and subt. for Daniel Razor". Yet another record of William Pharris says "A substitute for Daniel Razor". What does all of this mean???????? Thanks for anything. Ellenor

    3. Ellenor, It looks to me as if your Daniel Razor paid William Pharris to substitute for him in his military commitment (a legal option in the early military, subject to registry with the authorities), and William subsequently, after taking Daniel's money, deserted and was charged with desertion by a military court, i.e., "See case of William Pharris". I'd guess that, if Daniel did his preliminary paperwork, he was scot free of culpability.
