I am researching Samuel Lewis(1801-1863) and Bricey(Holt) Lewis(1804-1873) of Vineyard Township(Evansville) Arkansas. Samuel was assigned 40 acres of land in Washington County Arkansas by President Franklin Pierce in 1854. The land was formerly "bounty" land given to a soldier who had fought in the War of 1812. This information was in a family history. First, what exactly was the story of giving War of 1812 veterans land? Are ther any records available at the national level of Veterans of this war including military service and land grants? At the Washington County level I have contacted a courthouse researcher about local land records. Sam and Bricey may have come to Arkansas from Tenn. and perhaps this land grant was the reason why. Census records show them in Washington County in 1850. Any help is appreciated. Greig Lewis
