Is there a source on the web (or otherwise) for determining where particular units were stationed during the war, and possibly what action they might have seen? I have the payroll records for my g-g-g-grandfather from Fleming Co., KY, indicating that he was with Capt. Joseph C. Belt's Co. of Infantry, Pogue's 4th Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Militia in 1812-13. One story about him just says that he was in "northern Ohio", but that is about all that I have found. Is there any way to find more details about the nature of his service? Doug Gordon
Lieutenant Colonel Robert Pogue was at Fort Defiance in Ohio under Brigadier General James Winchester in the Fall of 1812. No mention of the unit he was commanding at the time. The rosters for Kentucky say he was in command of Pogue's Regiment from August 27, 1812 to September 26, 1812; there was a Robert Pogue at the Battle of the Thames. Under Pogue, Belt was Captain of the 2nd Company. Captain Joseph C. Belt was also in command of the 4th Company of the 28th Regiment United States Infantry which was formed January 29, 1813. Members of the 28th Infantry saw action on Perry's ships at the Battle of Lake Erie in August 1813; the regiment was at Longwood and Sturgeon's Creek in Canada. You might try researching Captain Belt - where he went, so went his unit.
