I purchased a Visioneer OneTouch 7300 USB scanner for about 40 dollars. Very compact, about 1-1/2 inches thick, and draws power from the laptop. It will scan at 600 DPI. Having said that, I used a Kodak Easy Share digital camera on this year's trip and wouldn't think of doing it any other way. It has a removable memory card, that holds about 70 photos, that can be downloaded directly to the laptop. The problem with scanners is that many libraries will not allow their use, or flash cameras for that matter. Apparently the light can damage the older documents.
