My GGG Grandfather was a veteran of the War of 1812. I have copies of his Bounty Land Claim from the National Archives, but have not been to determine what N.Y. Militia units he served in, as he only reports who the commanders are. 1. Anyone know if unit designations can be determined from the following info? 2. Is anyone familiar with the operations he describes? I'm thinking it may be part of the NY Militia. Id like to learn more to fill in the blanks in his service. Or, if possible what was occurring at the time near where he was at? Name: Joshua LaDue His Bounty Land claim, made in 1851, states: 1st Term: 20 March 1814 11 April 1814 In March 1814 he was a soldier in the Company commanded by Captain Omerman (Ommerman) as a substitute in place of Richard Rood who was drafted at Cayuga County. He stated he went from Cayuga County to Buffalo and then was transferred to Captain Elys (Eilys) Company. After one month he was discharged at Seven Mile Creek. He said he could not remember his Colonels name, and his discharge was lost. 2nd Term: 5 Aug 1814 8 November 1814 In August the same year (1814) he was drafted as a sergeant (Im sure again at Cayuga County) and went again to Buffalo under Captain Whittlesy, he thought his Lieutenants name was Richison. His Militia Colonel was Brooks. After the battle at Fort Erie he was taken sick and given furlough to go home. When he returned He and Lieutenant Richison along some Privates were detatched to Captain Chester Barrows Company and went to Green Bush with prisoners under the command of Major McMahan. He then returned to Batavia where he was dismissed. Paul __________________________________ Yahoo! for Good - Make a difference this year. http://brand.yahoo.com/cybergivingweek2005/
There is a Joshua LaDue living in Portland, NY, who was awarded a claim of $80 from the War of 1812 based on depreciation of clothing and equipment he used. This claim is indexed as number 1229 in the New York Adjutant General's Office report, "Index of Awards on Claims of the Soldiers of the War of 1812." According to information, "The original declarations of claims from which the index was compiled are on file in the Bureau of War Records maintained by the Division of Military and Naval Affairs, Public Security Building, Albany, New York, 12206. The declaration indicates the claimants name and military grade, inclusive period of service and land warrant, if any, granted as a result of his service." This may be worth pursuing.
