THIS MESSAGE FAILED TO REACH OUR WAR OF 1812 MAILING LIST. I AM FOR- WARDING THIS IN AN EFFORT TO HELP ANNE WITH HER LAIRD RESEARCHING OK PLEASE DIRECT ALL OUR REPLIES DIRECTLY TO HER ADDRESS LISTED BELOW I have a quote from the Linn's History of Centre Co, PA that WILLIAM LAIRD was a veteran of the War of 1812. He was born c1787 and died c1861 Worth Twp., Centre Co., PA. The earliest I've found him is in the Morris Twp, Huntingdon Co, PA 1830 Census. I don't know where in PA he was residing at the time of his enlistment. Is there any possibility of finding him amongst all the veterans from PA of that war??! Thanks for any advice and help. My g/g/Grandfather William Blackman Ligon was in the War of 1812. He had resided in Covington , La. and had engaged in the schooner trade between Covington, New Orleans and Pensacola, Fla. Please see if you have a David Nelson, surgeon's mate. He was probably from Philadelphia but settled in Jefferson County, NY where he married Sophia Patrick Dec., 1816. He became a member of the Jeff. Co. Medical Society until his death about 1830. Any help is appreciated. There is no pension application that I could find. Carolyn Bulgey cbulgey@adelphia.net
I have a book called "A Gentlemanly and Honorable Profession" The Creation of The U.S. Naval Officer Corps, 1794-1815. If you have an ancestor from the War of 1812 in the Navy, let me know and I will look to see if there is anything in this book. My Caton ancestors are mentioned briefly, so I just had to have the book. Sue

Hi Sue Not what you are asking, but your message gives me the opportunity to advise that my first attempt at volume 6 of Captain Chamier's 1837 edition of William James Naval Histroy of Great Britain, which includes the British perspective of the War of 1812 and includes details of some of the engagements you mention: (as originally written c 1824-1827) can be down loaded in .pdf format from: 1811 @ 600 Kb which includes the index or list of contents http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pbtyc/Naval_History/Vol_VI/1811.pdf 1812: @ 1238 KB http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pbtyc/Naval_History/Vol_VI/1812.pdf 1813: @ 742 Kb http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pbtyc/Naval_History/Vol_VI/1813.pdf 1814: @ 548 Kb http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pbtyc/Naval_History/Vol_VI/1814.pdf I should add that William James, whilst an excellent historian comes over at the extreme end of the word pedantic at times ;-), and had, I understand, a rather unpleasant experience in the USA during the war or in the period leading up to this war, so he wasn't exactly "fond" of his N American cousins - and this sadly shows through in the narrative - so this should be born in mind if and when you read it ;-) And he and Mr Clark, a well known US Historian could understandably never agree and used to insult each other from a distance ;-) The rest of the volume is there, but I've excluded the files as being off-topic. As some of you may know, the vote on the bill was postponed until August 6, so since you can still contact the California Assembly, please do so. Needless to say, it is VERY important that we all contact the California State Assembly, before they meet for the vote in the morning. This will impact people all over the country, but will make it hardest for we Californians. We don't have much time, but it is VERY important that we contact everyone we know and let the Legislators know how "stupid" this new law will be. Is there a published regimental history for the 21st Regiment of US Infantry during the War of 1812? Dean Scribner Las Vegas, Nevada
He may have been an in the US Army or in the militia of another state - do you know when and where he came from? You might try the County Recorders Office at the courthouse in Jefferson County. They keep the graves registration records for all known veterans - this was started in the 1930's by the WPA and is kept up to date by Ohio State law. Recently I discovered that my great great grandfather Charles LUCIUS Barrett may have served in he War of 1812. According to claim # 12308 filed by his widow Abalina Jackson Gregory from Porters Corner, Saratoga County, NY, Charles LUCIUS Barrett served under a Major Dalby and a Captain David T. Welsh in the Ordinance Dept. In a sworn statement dated 28 June 1864, Abalina swore that her husband Charles LUCIUS Barrett was the identical person who served under the name of John Lee. Charles LUCIUS, the son of Joseph Barrette and Marion Bary was born in France, near Belgium in 1789. He came to the U.S. with his brother Harry and they settled near Boylston, NY, and/or Greenfield Center. Anyone having any information about the unit commanded by a Major Dalby and/or a Capt. Welsh in Ordinance, is requested to contact me. According to the National Archives this claim was "REJECTED" but no reason for the denial was given. I find it hard to believe that both his widow and his daughter Sarah D. Synder (26 November 1895) would both file a claim if Charles LUCIUS had not served his new country. Further, Charles LUCIAN Barrett, son of Abalina and Charles LUCIUS Barrett, enlisted in the U.S. Artillery and served in the Mexican War. Don Barrett
