My 3rd Great-Grandfather was commissioned as Capt into the 5th Co of the 122nd Regiment of the Militia of Washington and Warren Co.s, PA on August 3, 1811. I have been to the National Archives, and they have no records or recognize seeing any regiments with numbers that high. Is there anyone who knows who they might have joined up with so I could attempt to get a look at his military records. thanks much, Bobbi ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Hi, I am new to the list. I have been back and forth on the internet trying to find rosters for the men in the war of 1812. I am looking for a William Jeffries (Jefferies) that was supposedly stationed in Norfolk. He was under a Captain Brook's. Every site wants to charge and you don't even know if it is the correct William Jeffries ? His family was living in Northumberland Co., Va. in 1812 but I cannot find any links to help me locate him. Can anyone give me some direction here ? Thank you, Jo Clark
Hi all. I am new to the list and this is my first posting to the list. My ancestor, Richard Branham, enlisted in the service 11 Jan. 1809 and was honorably discharged 13 Jan. 1814. He fought during the War of 1812. He enlisted in Stokes Co., NC in a rifle regiment under Benjamin Forsyth. When he was discharged in 1814, he was in Wm. Smyth's company, rifle regiment. In doing a little bit of research on the net, I found where Benjamin Forsyth was killed in 1813. I am under the assumption that Wm. Smyth must have taken over that Co. Richard applied for land in 1820 per a deed I located in Cumberland Co. KY. I have not been able to find where the land was (assuming he recieved it). Can anyone tell me where the land the Gov. was giving in 1820 may have been? Also, is anyone familiar with Benj. Farsyth and Wm. Smyth's rifle regiment and can tell me about them? Thanks for any and all information. Rex Bertram --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am looking for info about events leading up to and culminating in The Battle of New Orleans from the American vounteer point of view. Have read many books available including various lives of Jackson. I'm seeking to get deeper on the subject to find troop lists, where recruited, etc. Seeking also the names of scholars who specialize in this area. My direct ancestors fought in the battle and I'm working on a family history. Any info will be greatly appreciated. J B Phillips
Can anyone who has access to the "The Muster Rolls of the Pennsylvania Volunteers in the War of 1812 lookup the name DANIEL COOK. He was supposed to served in William Sample's Militia".......Tom
Would like to invite everyone to our new web site, GA VETERANS at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gavets For the purpose of the web site the definition of a GA Veteran is anyone that was Born in GA or Lived in GA or Died in GA or served in a GA Military unit. We have mainly some Bios and photos, but are accepting diaries, letters, histories, war stories and rosters. If you have a web site or know of a good web site related to GA Veterans, please let us know. We will seek permission to link to the web site. We also need some volunteers that can help researchers with simple look-ups or guide them as to where to look. If interested, please e-mail me privately at drobbin6@bellsouth.net Suggestions for the web site can also be e-mailed privately. While at the web site, be sure to sign our guest book. Thanks Doris
The book: "Muster Rolls of the Pennsylvania Volunteers in the War of 1812", originally published in 1890, shows 8 men with the name of John Williams. Only two of the regiments where these men are listed have the county of origin: John E. Williams, Private, Captain Thomas Walker's Company, First Regiment, First Brigade Pennsylvania Militia. August 29, 1814 - March 5, 1815 from Dauphin County. John Williams, Private, Captain Thomas Huston's Company, Second Regiment, Second Brigade, Pennsylvania Militia. September 1, 1814 - March 1, 1815 from Lancaster, County. Yes pensions were given for veterans of the War of 1812. I've been the War of 1812 route before. When you send for records, send for the full pension file. I use Form NATF 85. Be sure to put in the state in which your ancestor served FROM, the info at the top of the form sometimes confuses people. I put the state in which he was born instead of the state he served from, that was wrong, so be sure to put the state he served from. When I go to the genealogy society this coming week I can look up in the War of 1812 Penshioners book to see if he is listed. I have been doing that for quite a few people on this list. I'll let you know what I find during the week. My ancestor was born in Maryland and lived there at the time of the war, BUT he served from New York State. If he received a pension I'll find him in the book. War records are very interesting. Have a great weekend. Can anyone help me? Penny was at NARA and finally found my gggggrandfather's military record when the staff couldn't. THANKS PENNY ! ;-) But when I did a good seach on this regiment I couldn't find any thing. does anyone know anything of this regiment or of a Capt. william Ecker's co. ? Or does anyone know anything about the Detached Cavalry Regiment (Warner's) New York? any help would be appreciated. Take Care Fran
Took me three tries and 10 years for the NARA to locate my ancestor's revolutionary war records of PA and each time I sent the same info. Second time I even sent a copy of the Record's listing from a published book. Got kind of expensive. His son fought in the war of 1812 in VA and received a military bounty which the NARA did have and I also found a muster roll and a pay roll at the Virginia Archives. Gary W. I sent a request for the pension records of James Moores. He supposedly fought in the War of 1812. They sent me a notice saying they can't find him. So, now I have these questions. 1. Were there pensions given for veterans of the War of 1812? 2. Moores is a name that gets spelled several ways. Would they have looked for variations? 3. In the place where they asked for state, I didn't think he fought for Ohio as I haven't been able to find him, so I put in his home state and Ohio. Would they have looked for both? 4. Its possible he served for the U.S. Army and not a particular state. I wrote that in the same box as #3. Would they have also looked for him in those records? Can anyone help me? Brian L. "Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Kentucky. Soldiers of the War of 1812", originally printed in Frankfort Kentucky in 1891. --- George W. Fletcher: Private, Captain James Hall's Company, Third Regiment, Kentucky Detached Militia. September 1, 1812 - December 25, 1812. George W. Fletcher: Private, Captain John Gorin's Company, Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Militia. August 29, 1813 - (date not given of discharge). Organized at Newport, Kentucky. George W. Fletcher: Private, Captain John E. London's Company, Kentucky Detachment of Spies. September 30, 1813 - October 30, 1813. --- No ages are mentioned, so it may not be possible to determine if all these refer to the same man from this source. The book does not have what action the regiments may have seen. FYI; One way to obtain them is through a local researcher. The cost isn't that much greater, especially when you take into consideration that the National Archives does not send you the whole file !! They determine and send you the major pages that they determine are pertinent to your request. They could be correct and they could be wrong in regards to the value of the pages selected, only you can determine that by having "all" the pages that exist in the file. In one example with my ancestors, I had written to obtain the war records of an ancestor's son, (a ggg uncle). The Archives did a good job of sending me all the data on that son, what the Archives did not send me was the other pages in the file that were on that sons father,(my gggg grandfather) of whom there was no known record that he had served. There were numerous letters in the file from the sons mother that covered her attempt to collect a pension on the father. ( my gggg grandfather). All information that would have been lost had it not been for a hired researcher that ontained CLEAR & LEGIBLE copies of ALL items in that file. My gggg grandmother finally did collect a pension for her son (ggg uncle) but did not collect one for her husband (gggg grandfather) as he having contracted Scurvy, failed to respond with the password in his rush to the latrines and was shot by the sentry, consequently his name never appeared on any pay, or muster rolls. Heres a researcher that will do an excellent job for you. He lives near the DC Archives.
